Abstract

The paper reports the experimental results on the temporal characteristics of coherent stimulated emission on the 3P0-3H6 transition of Pr3+ ion dopped into the LaF3 matrix while tuning of pumping frequency in the vicinity of the 3H4-3P0 transition. The generation pulse duration was found to be about 10 ns, and it was delayed by 3-4 ns relative to the beginning of the pumping pulse at the exact resonance. It was observed that as the detuning increased, the shape of the coherent stimulated emission pulse changed and its delay increased up to 10ns. A theoretical interpretation of the experimental results observed is proposed.

Temporal evolution of a coherent stimulated radiation pulse in the three-level system in a Pr3+: LaF3crystal

A. I. Agafonov, Grigorii G Grigoryan, Nikolay V Znamenskiy +4 more

The temporal characteristics of coherent stimulated radiation at the 3 P 0 — 3 H 6 transition in the Pr 3+ ion in a LaF 3 matrix are studied by tuning the pump frequency in the vicinity of the 3 H 4 — 3 P 0 transition. It is found that in the case of the exact tuning to the resonance, a laser pulse, consisting of a train of picosecond spikes of total duration about 10 ns, was delayed by 3–4 ns with respect to the pump pulse onset. As the pump pulse detuning was increased, the shape of the coherent laser pulse changes and its delay increased up to 10 ns. The experimental results are interpreted theoretically.

The features of coherent stimulated emission of Pr3+doped into LaF 3 matrix

G. G. Grigoryan, Yu. V. Orlov, Evgenii A Petrenko +2 more

The paper presents the experimental results on temporal characteristics of coherent stimulated emission on the 3PO-3H6 transition of Pr3+ doped into the LaF3 matrix while turning the pumping frequency in the vicinity of 3H4-3PO transition. The stimulated emission was generated in the modes both with and without an external resonator. It was found that the emission duration could be up to 2 μs and consisted of train of spikes. Simultaneously the fluorescence emission was observed on the 3PO-3H4, 3H5j, 3H6, 3F2 transitions Pr3+, which also had a complicated temporal form.

Peculiarities of two-color optical superradiance in the LaF 3 :Pr 3+ crystal

Alexei A. Kalachev, Самарцев Виталий Владимирович

We report the results of detailed investigation of optical superradiance (SR) in LaF3:Pr3+ crystal resonantly excited on the 3P0-3H4(0) transition by laser pulse. When the power of the pumping pulse was higher than a certain threshold, the resonant medium emitted by optical SR pulse on 3P0-3H4(0) transition in the direction of the pumping pulse (as well as in the opposite direction) delayed in time with respect to the pumping pulse. Further increasing of the peak power of the pumping pulse led to the observation of SR on the 3P0-3H6(1) transition also. Thus, the two-color SR in the employed crystal was observed.

Spectroscopy, relaxation, and laser action in Pr3+:LaF3

R. Kichinski, Fred Moshary, Sven R. Hartmann

The photon echo technique was used to investigate the 3P0‐3H6 (5985Å) and the two 3P0‐3H5 (5333.0 Å 5333.5 Å) transitions in Pr3+:LaF3 at 4.6 K. On the 3P0‐3H6 transition, the data displayed modulation and spanned a dynamic range of nine decades in intensity. Echo relaxation rates were anomalously fast in view of previous experiments in this sample. We also report observation of ‘Satellite Echoes’ on the satellite lines of the 3P0‐3H4(4778 Å) transition and present photon echo data obtained on one of the satellite lines. Lasing was observed at 4.6 K and at 77 K during pulse excitation of the 3P0‐3H4 and 3P1(2I6)‐3H4(4633 Å) transitions.

Spiky structure of coherent emission from optically thick media

Ashat M. Basharov, G. G. Grigoryan, Nikolay V Znamenskiy +4 more

The spiky structure of the spontaneous emission from praseodymium ions in the LaF 3 lattice on the 3 P 0 - 3 H 6 transition under coherent pulsed excitation of the adjacent 3 H 4 - 3 P 0 transition has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical conclusions based on analysis of the emission dynamics of an excited ensemble of three-level systems in the mean field approximation. The generation of a spiky structure is interpreted as the emission of a cnoidal wave pulse. The recorded random pattern of time intervals between the spikes reflects the sensitivity of the cnoidal wave period to fluctuations in the system. The developed theory has been found to be related to models of deterministic chaotic dynamics.

Long-term image storage and phase conjugation by a backward-stimulated echo in Pr^3+:LaF_3

M. K. Kim, Ravinder Kachru

We have observed spatial-image storage and phase conjugation, using a backward-stimulated echo in a solid sample. The image storage and the delayed phase conjugation were observed to last for at least 15 sec, which is 3 × 105 times longer than the radiative lifetime of the excited state. The backward-stimulated echo produced on the 3H4–3P0 transition of Pr3+:LaF3 is found to be a phase-conjugated spatial reproduction of the first excitation pulse. The image storage time depends strongly on the sample temperature.
