The harmonic oscillator: values of the SU(3) invariants

Abstract

Formulae are given relating the Hamiltonian of the three-dimensional harmonic oscillator to the second and third order invariants I 2 and I 3 , respectively, of its symmetry group SU(3). For those irreducible representations which are realized by wavefunctions of the harmonic oscillator, I 2 and I 3 are diagonal operators satisfying the relationship 6I 3 =I 2 (4I 2 +l) 1 2/.

The symmetry group of the harmonic oscillator and its reduction

Toshihiro Iwai

The symmetry of the harmonic oscillator is dealt with in the Hamiltonian formalism. Unitary operators representing the symmetry are studied from this point of view. Of additional interest is reduction of the symmetry group SU(4) for the four-dimensional harmonic oscillator. Subspaces are determined from the representation spaces for SU(4) so as to give those for SO(4).

An Algebraic Approach to the Harmonic Oscillator Plus an Inverse Square Potential in Three Dimensions

Shi‐Hai Dong, M. Lozada-Cas

The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the three-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a harmonic oscillator plus an inverse square interaction are obtained. A realization of the ladder operators for the wave functions is studied. It is found that these operators satisfy the commutation relations of an SU(1,1) group. The closed analytical expressions for the matrix elements of different functions ρ and ρd/dρ with ρ = r 2 are evaluated. Another hidden symmetry explores the relations between the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for substituting r→ ir. PACS number(s): 03. 65. Fd, 03. 65.Ge and 02. 20.Qs.

Harmonic oscillator states with integer and non-integer orbital angular momentum

Martin Land

We study the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator in two and three dimensions, with particular attention to the solutions as basis states for representing their respective symmetry groups — O(2), O(1,1), O(3), and O(2,1). The goal of this study is to establish a correspondence between Hilbert space descriptions found by solving the Schrodinger equation in polar coordinates, and Fock space descriptions constructed by expressing the symmetry operators in terms of creation/annihilation operators. We obtain wavefunctions characterized by a principal quantum number, the group Casimir eigenvalue, and one group generator whose eigenvalue is m + s , for integer m and real constant parameter s . For the three groups that contain O(2), the solutions split into two inequivalent representations, one associated with s = 0, from which we recover the familiar description of the oscillator as a product of one-dimensional solutions, and the other with s > 0 (in three dimensions, solutions are found for s = 0 and s = 1/2) whose solutions are non-separable in Cartesian coordinates, and are hence overlooked by the standard Fock space approach. The O(1,1) solutions are singlet states, restricted to zero eigenvalue of the symmetry operator, which represents the boost, not angular momentum. For O(2), a single set of creation and annihilation operators forms a ladder representation for the allowed oscillator states for any s, and the degeneracy of energy states is always finite. However, in three dimensions, the integer and half-integer eigenstates are qualitatively different: the former can be expressed as finite dimensional irreducible tensors under O(3) or O(2,1) while the latter exhibit infinite degeneracy. Creation operators that produce the allowed integer states by acting on the non-degenerate ground state are constructed as irreducible tensor products of the fundamental vector representation. However, the half-integer eigenstates are infinite-dimensional, as expected for the non-compact O(2,1), and no Fock space description is found for this case. For all s ≠ 0 solutions, the SU(N) symmetry of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian recently discovered by Bars is spontaneously broken by the ground state. The connection of this symmetry breaking to the non-separability into one-dimensional Cartesian solutions is demonstrated. We conclude with a discussion of the O(2,1) solutions, and the problem of timelike ghost excitations.

The Schwinger SU(3) Construction - II: Relations between Heisenberg-Weyl and SU(3) Coherent States

S. Chaturvedi, Narasimhaiengar Mukunda

The Schwinger oscillator operator representation of SU(3), studied in a previous paper from the representation theory point of view, is analysed to discuss the intimate relationships between standard oscillator coherent state systems and systems of SU(3) coherent states. Both SU(3) standard coherent states, based on choice of highest weight vector as fiducial vector, and certain other specific systems of generalised coherent states, are found to be\nrelevant. A complete analysis is presented, covering all the oscillator coherent states without exception, and amounting to SU(3) harmonic analysis of these states.\n\n

A general expression for the multipole moments of the quantum harmonic oscillator

Victor Namias

Multipole moments for the harmonic oscillator as well as for other familiar quantum systems can be obtained without knowledge of the wavefunction by means of simple recursion relations. The third-order differential equation satisfied by the probability density is first obtained and from it, the recursion relation for the moments is directly deduced. A general and presumably novel formula giving all the multipole moments is obtained by solving the finite difference equation generated by the recursion relation.
