Abstract

We present the theoretical investigation of photoelectron spectroscopy resulting from the strong field induced multiphoton ionization in a typical three-level ladder-style system. Our theoretical results show that the photo-electron spectral structure can be alternatively steered by spectral phase modulation. This physical mechanism for strong field quantum control is explicitly exploited by the time-dependent dressed state population. It is concluded that the phase-shaped laser pulses can be used to selectively manipulate the multiphoton ionization process in complicated quantum systems.

Three-state selective population of dressed states via generalized spectral phase-step modulation

M. Wollenhaupt, Tim Bayer, Nikolay V. Vitanov +1 more

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of selective population of dressed states (SPODS) in a three-level system. Control is exerted by shaped intense femtosecond laser pulses generated by a generalized spectral phase-step modulation function. We show that both control parameters (i.e., the phase-step amplitude and position) can be used to switch population among each three dressed states with high selectivity. The dynamics of the system, and hence the resulting photoelectron signal is studied theoretically by analyzing the time evolution of the adiabatic dressed-state energies and populations.

Coherent control of electrons, atoms and molecules with intense shaped light pulses

M. Wollenhaupt, Tim Bayer, Marc Krug +2 more

We report on a physical mechanism of coherent control with intense shaped femtosecond laser pulses. We study photoelectron spectra from multi-photon ionization of potassium atoms and dimers using tailored femtosecond laser pulses. Our results are interpreted in terms of Selective Population of Dressed States (SPODS). Two realizations of SPODS by Photon Locking (PL) via pulse sequences and Rapid Adiabatic Passage (RAP) via chirped pulses are discussed. New physical mechanisms arise, when both PL and RAP are at play simultaneously. Control by the combined effect of PL and RAP is studied by mapping out a two-parameter Quantum Control Landscape (QCL) for selective population of dressed states.

Quantum Coherent Modulation on Photoelectron Spectra in Two Resonant Multi-Photon Ionization Process

Yu Ding

The properties of the photoelectron spectra in two resonant multi-photon ionization process are studied by means of dressed state theory and perturbation theory. The influences on the photoelectron spectra by the area of the first pulse and the delay between two pulses are discussed under strong-field scheme. It is shown that the photoelectron spectra can be modulated by the areas of the two pulses and the delay between them.Control of Autler-Townes doublet and the interferences in doublet can be realized by the area of the first pulse and the delay between the two pulses. The selective population of dressed states(SPODS)also can be realized by this coherent quantum mechanism. The population of dressed states cannot be selected by the area of the second pulse, but obviously it can be modulated.

Control of resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization photoelectron spectroscopy by phase-shaped femtosecond laser pulse

Shian Zhang, Chenhui Lu, Tianqing Jia +2 more

In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate that the (2+1+1) resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization photoelectron spectroscopy in sodium atom can be effectively controlled by shaping femtosecond laser pulse with a π phase step modulation in weak laser field, involving its total photoelectron energy, maximal photoelectron intensity, and spectroscopic bandwidth. Our results show that the total photoelectron energy can be suppressed but not enhanced, the maximal photoelectron intensity can be enhanced and also suppressed, and the photoelectron spectroscopy can be tremendously narrowed. These theoretical results can provide a feasible scheme to achieve the high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and study the excited state structure in atomic and molecular systems.

Coherent strong-field control of multiple states by a single chirped femtosecond laser pulse

Marc Krug, Tim Bayer, M. Wollenhaupt +4 more

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study on strong-field photo-ionization of sodium atoms using chirped femtosecond laser pulses. By tuning the chirp parameter, selectivity among the population in the highly excited states 5p, 6p, 7p and 5f, 6f is achieved. Different excitation pathways enabling control are identified by simultaneous ionization and measurement of photoelectron angular distributions employing the velocity map imaging technique. Free electron wave packets at an energy of around 1 eV are observed. These photoelectrons originate from two channels. The predominant 2 + 1 + 1 resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) proceeds via the strongly driven two-photon transition 4s←←3s, and subsequent ionization from the states 5p, 6p and 7p whereas the second pathway involves 3 + 1 REMPI via the states 5f and 6f. In addition, electron wave packets from two-photon ionization of the non-resonant transiently populated state 3p are observed close to the ionization threshold. A mainly qualitative five-state model for the predominant excitation channel is studied theoretically to provide insights into the physical mechanisms at play. Our analysis shows that by tuning the chirp parameter the dynamics is effectively controlled by dynamic Stark shifts and level crossings. In particular, we show that under the experimental conditions the passage through an uncommon three-state 'bow-tie' level crossing allows the preparation of coherent superposition states.

Study on properties of the two-photon ionization photoelectron spectra by frequency-modulated fields

Yongfang Li

Properties of the two-photon ionization photoelectron spectra in excitation-ionization scheme by frequency-modulated fields are studied by means of perturbation theory and numerical calculation method. The influences on the photoelectron spectra by the modulated amplitude, the modulated frequency, and the initial phase of the frequency-modulated field and the detuning are discussed under strong-field mechanism. It is shown that the photoelectron spectra can be modulated by the modulated amplitude, the modulated frequency, the initial phase and the detuning.Quantum control of the photoelectron spectra can be realized by those parameters.Mechanism of quantum coherent control in this system is monitoring the selective population of dressed states(SPODS).
