Spontaneous Emission of a Two-Level Atom in Chiral Photonic Structures

Abstract

The spontaneous emission spectrum of a two-level atom in a one-dimensional (1D) anisotropic photonic crystal with symmetry of double helix is investigated using Laplace transform. Properties of spectrum of the radiation modes are discussed in detail under different values of detuning of atomic resonant frequency from a band-edge. Since spontaneous emission is proportional to the density of states (DOS), it is suppressed within the reflection band, corresponding to vanishing of the DOS. However, it is enhanced at the band edge. Therefore, spontaneous emission spectrum of the system is influenced at the edge of the stop band rather than at its centre.

Spontaneous emission from a two-level atom in two-band anisotropic photonic crystals

Yaping Yang, Michael Fleischhauer, Shi-Yao Zhu

We investigate the spontaneous radiation from a two-level atom embedded in a three-dimensional anisotropic photonic crystal with two bands. The properties of the spontaneous emission are dependent strongly on the position of the upper level. The faster and slower decay components can occur in the emitted field, but it does not mean the existence of both accelerated and inhibited components for the atomic population decay. The radiation spectrum is dependent on the location of the observer. We also study the influence of the existence of the two bands on spontaneous emission, Lamb shift, the emitted field, and the radiation spectrum.

Spontaneous emission spectrum of a four-level atom in a double-band photonic crystal

Jian Wang, Dong Yang, Hanzhuang Zhang

The spontaneous emission spectrum from a four-level atom in a double-band photonic crystal has been investigated. We use the model which assumes three atomic transitions. One of the transitions interacts with the free vacuum modes and the other two transitions couple to the modes of the isotropic photonic band gap (PBG), the anisotropic PBG and another free vacuum. The effects of the fine structure of the lower levels on the spontaneous emission spectrum of an atom are investigated in detail in the three cases. New features of four (two) transparencies with two (one) spontaneous emission peaks, resulting from the fine structure of the lower levels of an atom, are predicted in the case of isotropic PBG modes.

Spontaneous emission from a two-level atom in anisotropic one-band photonic crystals: A fractional calculus approach

Jing-Nuo Wu, Chih‐Hsien Huang, Szu-Cheng Cheng +1 more

Spontaneous emission (SE) from a two-level atom in an anisotropic photonic crystal (PC) is investigated by the fractional calculus. Physical phenomena of the SE are studied analytically by solving the fractional kinetic equations of the SE. There is a dynamical discrepancy between the SE of anisotropic and isotropic PCs. We find that, contrary to the SE phenomenon of the isotropic PC, the SE near the band edge of an anisotropic PC shows no photon-atom bound state. It is consistent with the experimental results of Barth, Schuster, Gruber, and Cichos [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 243902 (2006)] that the anisotropic property of the system enhances the SE. We also study effects of dispersion curvatures on the changes of the photonic density of states and the appearance of the diffusion fields in the SE.

Characteristics of the spontaneous emission field and spectrum of a two-level atom in a dynamic photonic crystal

Xing Rong, Xie Shuang-Yuan, Xu Jing-Ping +1 more

The spontaneous emission field and spectrum of a two-level atom, located in an isotropic photonic crystal with dynamic band edges, are investigated by means of numeric calculation. The investigation is expected to help comprehend the characteristics of the atomic spontaneous emission in the dynamic photonic crystal, and provide a possible way to control dynamically the spontaneous emission in photonic crystal. The expression of the spontaneous radiation field is obtained without using the far-zone approximation and the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation, and expected to be applicable in other relevant researches. In the investigation, the spontaneous radiation field and spectrum are calculated when the band edge frequency is unmodulated, or modulated by a step function or triangle function. In the unmodulated situation, the radiation field intensity tends to a constant which is equal to the intensity of the localized field component. The radiation field pulse presents a wave packet behavior as propagation distance increases. The components of the radiation field correspond one-to-one to the peaks in the spontaneous radiation spectrum. When the band edge frequency is modulated by step function, the radiation field intensity tends to a steady-state value after the modulation has happened. And the steady-state intensity is affected by the time when the modulation happens. The components of the non-localized field and the frequency of the localized field after modulation depend on the atomic transition frequency and the band edge frequency, and are identical to those in the unmodulated situation with the same parameters. When the band edge frequency is modulated by a triangle function, the field intensity presents a decaying quasi-periodic oscillation after a long enough time. The modulation frequency determines the frequency of the oscillation, and influences the decay rate. The radiation energy becomes sharp peaks around a set of the discrete frequencies which are evenly spaced with the modulation frequency. The central frequency of these frequencies depends on the atomic transition frequency and the value range of the band edge frequency. The modulation initial phase affects the intensity of the radiation field emitted in an initial period of time.

Spontaneous emission of a two-level atom in one dimensional LHM-RHM photonic crystals (Invited Paper)

Shi-Yao Zhu, Nian-hua Liu, Jing Xu

We investigate the spontaneous emission of a two-level atom in one dimensional photonic crystals composed of left-hand material (LHM) and right-hand material (RHM). A complete set of mode functions is constructed for the quantization of the radiation field. It is found that the mode functions for the frequency with in the band gap decreases exponentially from the surface to the interior of the photonic crystal which results in a much weaker field than the vacuum in the free space. The depression of the field leads to weak interaction with the atom, which leads to the suppressed spontaneous emission. Due to the strong reflection, the field in the LHM-RHM structure is much weaker than that in the RHM-RHM structure, thus the spontaneous emission is more strongly suppressed.

Spontaneous emission from Λ-type three-level atom driven by bichromatic field in anisotropic double-band photonic crystals

Kai Ling, Jiang Li, Ren-Gang Wan +1 more

The spontaneous emission property of Λ-type three-level atom driven by the bichromatic field in the anisotropic double-band photonic crystal is calculated by n-times iteration method. The influence of different parameters on atomic spontaneous emission is studied, and the phenomena of atomic spontaneous emission are explained in the dressed state representation. It is found that the spontaneous emission spectra of the atom driven by the bichromatic field presents a multi-peak comb structure. The position of the emission peak is determined by the initial state of the atom, and the interval between the neighboring emission peaks is the detuning δ of the bichromatic field. When the ratio between Rabi frequency intensity and the detuning δ of the bichromatic field remains unchanged, the intensity of each emitted peak remains invariant. The spontaneously emitted peak can be annihilated in the band gap and enhanced near the band edge in the anisotropic photonic crystals. Meanwhile, we also observe the fluorescence quenching phenomenon in the spontaneous emission spectra. The research in this paper provides the theoretical guidance for the control of atomic spontaneous emission.
