Abstract

We investigate the formation of optical histahility (OB) in a crystal of molecular magnets contained in a unidirectional ring cavity. The crystal is subjected to one dc magnetic field and two (probe and coupling) ac resonant magnetic field. The results show that OB can be controlled efficiently by adjusting the intensity of the control field, the detuning of probe magnetic field and the cooperation parameter. Furthermore, within certain parameter range, the optical multistablity (OM) can also be observed in the crystal medium. This investigation can be used for designing new types of nonelectronic devices for realizing switching process.

Optical bistability and multistability via magnetic field intensities in a solid

Hamid Reza Hamedi

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behavior in molecular magnets is theoretically studied. It is demonstrated that the OB of the system can be controlled via adjusting the magnetic field intensity. In addition, it is shown that the frequency detuning of probe and coupling fields, as well as the cooperation parameter, has remarkable effects on the OB behavior of the system. Also, we find that OB can be converted to OM through the magnitude of control-field detuning. Our results can be used as a guideline for optimizing and controlling the switching process in the crystal of molecular magnets.

Controllable Optical Bistability and Multistability in a Four-Level Atomic System with Closed-Loop Configuration

Xin‐You Lü, Jiahua Li, Ji-Bing Liu

We theoretically investigate optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) behaviour of a closed-loop configuration atomic system driven by a degenerate coupling field and a degenerate probe field inside a unidirectional ring cavity. It is found that the OB and OM behaviour can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field, respectively. Interestingly, our numerical results show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field under a appropriate frequency detuning. The effect of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OB behaviour is also discussed.

We analyze hybrid absorptive-dispersive optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) behavior in a generic $N$-type atomic system driven by a degenerate probe field and a coherent coupling field by means of a unidirectional ring cavity. We show that the OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the detuning of the coupling field, and the OM can also be observed under the appropriate detuning. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on atomic OB behavior is also discussed.

Controlling Optical Bistability and Multistability in a Three-level ∧-type Atomic System Under the Nonresonant Condition

Under nonresonant condition,we theoretically investigate the optical bistability(OB) and multistability(OM) behaviors in a three-level ∧-type system using a microwave field driving a hyperfine transition between two lower states inside the unidirectional ring cavity. The results show that the optical bistability behavior can be controlled by adjusting the intensity and the frequency detuning of the coupling field, respectively. It is also found that the microwave field plays an important role in achieving the multistability. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OM behavior is discussed at last.

Controlling the Optical Bistability via External Magnetic Field in a Coherent Atomic Medium

H. Jafarzadeh

A four-level inverse Y-type atomic system with a microwave-driven field contained in a unidirectional ring cavity is proposed for controlling the optical bistability behavior with application on all-optical switching. Two circularly polarized components from a weak linearly-polarized probe beam are interacted separately by two transitions of this medium. A coherent coupling field derived another atomic transition. Under the steady state condition, we can control the occurrence of the optical bistability by modulating different parameters, such as the probe detuning ( ), the electronic cooperation parameter (C), the magnitude of electromagnetic field (B), and left- or right- handed circular polarized beams. Also, it is found that the stable output field of the optical cavity can be controlled by adjusting the intensity of the input field. It is demonstrated that the transmission coefficient of two orthogonally polarized beams at different frequencies can be achieved by adjusting the magnitude of the external magnetic field. It is found that the threshold of the optical bistability can be controlled by the magnitude of the external magnetic field. Also, it is shown that the optical bistability can be converted to optical multistability by switching the two orthogonally polarized beams. In this paper, in the case of the steady-state and transient response, we investigated the effect of external magnetic field on optical bistability of a four-level atomic system in the presence of strong coherent laser beam. Here, a laser probe signal consists of two left- and right- handed circular polarized beams which are interacted by two different transitions. The optical system provides a new experimental method to test optical bistability theory.

Controllable optical bistability and multistability in a double two-level atomic system

Jing Wu, Xin‐You Lü, Lili Zheng

We theoretically investigate the behaviour of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) in a generic double two-level atomic system driven by two orthogonally polarized fields (a π-polarized control field and a σ-polarized probe field). It is found that the behaviour of OB can be controlled by adjusting the intensity or the frequency detuning of the control field. Interestingly enough, our numerical results also show that it is easy to realize the transition from OB to OM or vice versa by adjusting the relative phase between the control and probe fields. This investigation can be used for the development of new types of devices for realizing an all-optic switching process.
