Unified Description of Fermi and Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in a Conserving Slave Boson Approximation for Strongly Correlated Impurity Models

Johann Kroha, P. Wölfle, Theo A. Costi

We show that the presence of Fermi or non-Fermi liquid behavior in the $\mathrm{SU}(N)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(M)$ Anderson impurity models may be read off the infrared threshold exponents governing the spinon and holon dynamics in a slave boson representation of these models. We construct a conserving $T$-matrix approximation which recovers the exact exponents with good numerical accuracy. Our approximation includes both coherent spin flip scattering and charge fluctuation processes. For the single-channel case the tendency to form bound states drastically modifies the low energy behavior. For the multichannel case in the Kondo limit the bound state contributions are unimportant.

Mesoscopic Anderson box: Connecting weak to strong coupling

Dong E. Liu, Sébastien Burdin, Harold U. Baranger +1 more

We study the Anderson impurity problem in a mesoscopic setting, namely the ``Anderson box,'' in which the impurity is coupled to finite reservoir having a discrete spectrum and large sample-to-sample mesoscopic fluctuations. Note that both the weakly coupled and strong coupling Anderson impurity problems are characterized by a Fermi-liquid theory with weakly interacting quasiparticles. We study how the statistical fluctuations in these two problems are connected, using random matrix theory and the slave boson mean-field approximation (SBMFA). First, for a resonant level model such as results from the SBMFA, we find the joint distribution of energy levels with and without the resonant level present. Second, if only energy levels within the Kondo resonance are considered, the distributions of perturbed levels collapse to universal forms for both orthogonal and unitary ensembles for all values of the coupling. These universal curves are described well by a simple Wigner-surmise-type toy model. Third, we study the fluctuations of the mean-field parameters in the SBMFA, finding that they are small. Finally, the change in the intensity of an eigenfunction at an arbitrary point is studied, such as is relevant in conductance measurements. We find that the introduction of the strongly coupled impurity considerably changes the wave function but that a substantial correlation remains.

Numerical Renormalization Group Study of Pseudo-Fermion and Slave-Boson Spectral Functions in the Single Impurity Anderson Model

Theo A. Costi, Peter Schmitteckert, Johann Kroha +1 more

We use the numerical renormalization group to calculate the auxiliary spectral functions of the $U=\ensuremath{\infty}$ Anderson impurity model. The slave-boson and pseudo-fermion spectral functions diverge at the threshold with exponents ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{b}$ and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{f}$ given by the x-ray photoemission and the x-ray absorption exponents, respectively. In contrast to the noncrossing approximation, the exact exponents obtained here depend on the impurity occupation number. In general, vertex corrections in the convolution formulas for physical Green's functions are singular at the threshold and may not be neglected in the Fermi liquid regime.
