Dual symmetries and universality of the critical behavior of a disordered ising ferromagnet

Abstract

The critical behavior of a d -dimensional random Ising ferromagnet described in the critical region by the Ginzburg-Landau model with a random temperature has been considered. The critical temperature dependences of thermodynamic quantities, the equation of state, and the spin correlation function at the Curie point have been calculated by the renormalization group method. The most profound questions of the theory of impurity ferromagnets are the problem of universality and the role of the Griffiths singularities.

Universal dependence on disorder of two-dimensional randomly diluted and random-bond ±J Ising models

Martin Hasenbusch B, Francesco Parisen Toldin, Andrea Pelissetto C +1 more

We consider the two-dimensional randomly site diluted Ising model and the random-bond +/-J Ising model (also called the Edwards-Anderson model), and study their critical behavior at the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition. The critical behavior of thermodynamic quantities can be derived from a set of renormalization-group equations, in which disorder is a marginally irrelevant perturbation at the two-dimensional Ising fixed point. We discuss their solutions, focusing in particular on the universality of the logarithmic corrections arising from the presence of disorder. Then, we present a finite-size scaling analysis of high-statistics Monte Carlo simulations. The numerical results confirm the renormalization-group predictions, and in particular the universality of the logarithmic corrections to the Ising behavior due to quenched dilution.

Computer simulation of the critical behavior of 3D disordered ising model

V. V. Prudnikov, Pavel Vladimirovich Prudnikov, A. N. Vakilov +1 more

The critical behavior of the disordered ferromagnetic Ising model is studied numerically by the Monte Carlo method in a wide range of variation of concentration of nonmagnetic impurity atoms. The temperature dependences of correlation length and magnetic susceptibility are determined for samples with various spin concentrations and various linear sizes. The finite-size scaling technique is used for obtaining scaling functions for these quantities, which exhibit a universal behavior in the critical region; the critical temperatures and static critical exponents are also determined using scaling corrections. On the basis of variation of the scaling functions and values of critical exponents upon a change in the concentration, the conclusion is drawn concerning the existence of two universal classes of the critical behavior of the diluted Ising model with different characteristics for weakly and strongly disordered systems.

Non-self-averaging in the Critical Point of a Random Ising Ferromagnet

Виктор Степанович Доценко

Abstract In this paper, we review recent results on sample-to-sample fluctuations in a critical Ising model with quenched random ferromagnetic couplings. In particular, in terms of the renormalized replica Ginzburg–Landau Hamiltonian in dimensions D < 4 an explicit expression for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the critical free energy fluctuations is derived. Next, using known fixed-point values for the renormalized coupling parameters the universal curve for such PDF in the dimension D = 3 is obtained. For the specific case of the two-dimensional Ising model, using replica calculations in the renormalization group framework, we derive explicit expressions for the PDF of the critical internal energy and for the specific heat fluctuations. It is shown that the disorder distribution of internal energy is Gaussian, and its typical sample-to-sample fluctuations as well as its average value scale with the system size L like ~ Llnln(L). In contrast, the specific heat is shown to be self-averaging with a distribution function that tends to a δ-peak in the thermodynamic limit L → ∞.

Universal free-energy distribution in the critical point of a random Ising ferromagnet

Victor S Dotsenko, Yurij V. Holovatch

We discuss the non-self-averaging phenomena in the critical point of weakly disordered Ising ferromagnet. In terms of the renormalized replica Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian in dimensions D<4, we derive an explicit expression for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the critical free-energy fluctuations. In particular, using known fixed-point values for the renormalized coupling parameters, we obtain the universal curve for such PDF in the dimension D=3. It is demonstrated that this function is strongly asymmetric: its left tail is much slower than the right one.

Theory of the two-dimensional Ising model with random impurities

Vytautas Victor Palciauskas

The effects of random impurities on the various thermodynamic functions are studied with the aid of the two-dimensional Ising model. Of special interest are the limiting forms of these functions near the critical point. This problem is approached by a Green's function formulation as developed by Kadanoff. Since experiments only measure the average effects of impurities, we consider the average of the Green's function over all distributions of impurities and calculate it by perturbation theory. From this function we find the location of the new critical temperature and the temperature dependence of the coherence length. Thermodynamic and correlation functions are calculated by means of perturbation expansions and their functional dependence on the coherence length investigated. It is found that the magnetic properties such as the magnetization, susceptibility, and spin-spin correlations retain the same functional dependence on the coherence length. The specific heat is found to have a finite value at the critical point, and the T = Tc form of the energy-energy correlation c function is changed. The thermodynamic functions exhibit new critical indices very close to Tc. These renormalized exponents have been predicted c in literature and are found to satisfy the scaling laws predictions.

Critical behavior of random transverse-field Ising spin chains

Daniel S. Fisher

A real-space renormalization-group treatment of random transverse-field Ising spin chains that was introduced previously is developed and extensively analyzed. It yields results that are asymptotically exact in the critical region near the zero-temperature para-to-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In particular, the exact scaling function is obtained for the magnetization as a function of a uniform applied magnetic field and the distance to the critical point, and up to the solution of a linear ordinary differential equation whose solution can be exhaustively analyzed, the scaling function of the average spin-spin correlation function is also obtained. Thus more exact information is obtainable about the critical behavior for this random model than is known for the pure version which is equivalent to the two-dimensional Ising model. The basic reason for this is the extremely broad distribution of energy scales that occurs at low energies near the critical point of the random system. For the random chain the distribution of the magnetization of the first spin in a semi-infinite system is also studied and the results found to agree in the scaling limit with results of McCoy obtained from the exact solution of the closely related McCoy-Wu Ising model; this provides strong justification for the validity of the present approach. The singular properties of the weakly ordered and weakly disordered ``Griffiths' phases'' that occur at zero temperature near the critical point are also studied, as well as the behavior at low but nonzero temperature. Possible extensions of the results and general lessons drawn from them for other random systems are briefly discussed.
