Non-self-averaging in the Critical Point of a Random Ising Ferromagnet

Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we review recent results on sample-to-sample fluctuations in a critical Ising model with quenched random ferromagnetic couplings. In particular, in terms of the renormalized replica Ginzburg–Landau Hamiltonian in dimensions D < 4 an explicit expression for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the critical free energy fluctuations is derived. Next, using known fixed-point values for the renormalized coupling parameters the universal curve for such PDF in the dimension D = 3 is obtained. For the specific case of the two-dimensional Ising model, using replica calculations in the renormalization group framework, we derive explicit expressions for the PDF of the critical internal energy and for the specific heat fluctuations. It is shown that the disorder distribution of internal energy is Gaussian, and its typical sample-to-sample fluctuations as well as its average value scale with the system size L like ~ Llnln(L). In contrast, the specific heat is shown to be self-averaging with a distribution function that tends to a δ-peak in the thermodynamic limit L → ∞.

Self-averaging in the random two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet

We study sample-to-sample fluctuations in a critical two-dimensional Ising model with quenched random ferromagnetic couplings. Using replica calculations in the renormalization group framework we derive explicit expressions for the probability distribution function of the critical internal energy and for the specific heat fluctuations. It is shown that the disorder distribution of internal energies is Gaussian, and the typical sample-to-sample fluctuations as well as the average value scale with the system size L like ∼Llnln(L). In contrast, the specific heat is shown to be self-averaging with a distribution function that tends to a δ peak in the thermodynamic limit L→∞. While previously a lack of self-averaging was found for the free energy, we here obtain results for quantities that are directly measurable in simulations, and implications for measurements in the actual lattice system are discussed.

Universal free-energy distribution in the critical point of a random Ising ferromagnet

Victor S Dotsenko, Yurij V. Holovatch

We discuss the non-self-averaging phenomena in the critical point of weakly disordered Ising ferromagnet. In terms of the renormalized replica Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian in dimensions D<4, we derive an explicit expression for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the critical free-energy fluctuations. In particular, using known fixed-point values for the renormalized coupling parameters, we obtain the universal curve for such PDF in the dimension D=3. It is demonstrated that this function is strongly asymmetric: its left tail is much slower than the right one.

Free energy distribution function of a random Ising ferromagnet

Victor S Dotsenko, B. A. Klumov

We study the free energy distribution function of a weakly disordered Ising ferromagnet in terms of the D -dimensional random temperature Ginzburg–Landau Hamiltonian. It is shown that besides the usual Gaussian ‘body’ this distribution function exhibits non-Gaussian tails both in the paramagnetic and in the ferromagnetic phases. Explicit asymptotic expressions for these tails are derived. It is demonstrated that the tails are strongly asymmetric: the left tail (for large negative values of the free energy) is much slower than the right one (for large positive values of the free energy). It is argued that at the critical point the free energy of the random Ising ferromagnet in dimensions D < 4 is described by a non-trivial universal distribution function which is non-self-averaging.

Lack of self-averaging of the critical internal energy in a weakly-disordered Baxter model

Ramgopal Agrawal, Victor S Dotsenko, M. Dudka +3 more

Abstract We investigate the first two moments of the critical internal energy E in a weakly disordered two-dimensional Baxter’s eight-vertex model as a function of the system size L , evaluated at the pseudo-critical point. Disorder is introduced via an equivalent representation of the pure eight-vertex model in terms of two ferromagnetic Ising models coupled by a four-spin interaction of strength g 0 , where the Ising couplings consist of a uniform ferromagnetic part J > 0 supplemented by weak Gaussian spatial disorder. In the critical regime, the model is formulated in terms of interacting Grassmann–Majorana spinor fields with quartic interactions and analyzed, for small positive g 0 , using a combination of replica and renormalization-group methods. We also run extensive numerical simulations measuring the critical internal energy. Our results show that its relative variance increases with L and approaches a finite constant as L → ∞ for both ± g 0 . Hence, fluctuations remain relevant independently of the sign of g 0 (and thus of the specific-heat exponent), implying a lack of self-averaging of both the critical internal energy and the free energy. Consequently, reliable estimates of these quantities require averaging over many disorder realizations. In addition, we numerically confirm earlier predictions concerning the absence of self-averaging of the critical internal energy in the disordered Ising model.

Self-averaging and criticality: A comparative study in 2d random bond spin models

Nikolaos G. Fytas, Anastasios Malakis

We investigate and contrast, via the Wang-Landau (WL) algorithm, the effects of quenched bond randomness on the self-averaging properties of two Ising spin models in 2d. The random bond version of the superantiferromagnetic (SAF) square model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor competing interactions and the corresponding version of the simple ferromagnetic Ising model are studied. We find that, the random bond SAF model shows a strong violation of self-averaging, much stronger than that observed in the case of the random bond Ising model. Our analysis of the asymptotic scaling behavior of the variance of the distribution of the sample-dependent pseudocritical temperatures is found to be consistent with the renormalization group prediction of Aharony and Harris. Using this alternative approach, we find estimates of the correlation length exponent $ν$ in agreement with results obtained from the usual finite-size scaling (FSS) methodology.

CRITICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE QUENCHED RANDOM MIXED-SPIN ISING MODEL

Maurício Godoy, W. Figueiredo

In this work, we simulated a quenched random mixed-spin Ising model on the square lattice. The model system consists of two different particles with spins σ = 1/2 (states ±1/2) and S = 1 (states ±1, 0). These particles are randomly distributed on the lattice, and we considered only nearest-neighbor interactions. This model can represent a random magnetic binary alloy AxB1-x, obtained from the high-temperature quenching of a liquid mixture. We performed Monte Carlo simulations for several lattice sizes and temperatures, and we found its critical temperature through the reduced fourth-order cumulant. We also determined the magnetization, the susceptibility, and the specific heat as a function of temperature. We used finite-size scaling arguments to estimate the critical exponents β, γ, and ν of the model. We showed that the quenched model is in the same universality class of the two-dimensional pure Ising model. We also investigated the sample to sample fluctuations that occur in the values of the thermodynamic quantities in order to describe the self-averaging properties at the critical point.
