Abstract

We report controllable azimuthons of four-wave mixing (FWM), which can be modulated by several parameters in experiment. The spot number, splitting depth, rotation angular velocity and direction of such azimuthons can be controlled by the frequency and intensity of the FWM signal or the dressing field through the cross-phase modulation due to atomic coherence. The intensity gain of the azimuthons can be modulated by frequency detuning through quantum parametric amplification. The quantum correlated FWM vortex is observed in experiment. We also discuss the applications of such controllable azimuthons in all-optical circulators, multiplexers (demultiplexers), routers, cross-connects and optical amplifiers.

Spatial interplay of two four-wave mixing images

Changbiao Li, Suling Sang, Yiqi Zhang +6 more

We investigate the interplay between the two components of the four-wave mixing (FWM) beams in a ladder-type three-level atomic system. The interplay, including the shift and splitting of the two FWM beams and their intensity modulation, depends on the frequency detuning and the angles as well as the powers of the pump fields. The x-directional splitting due to the cross-phase modulation and y-directional splitting because of electromagnetically induced gratings of FWM beams are investigated. Both the theoretical and experimental results exhibit that the spatial separation and the number of the FWM signals can be well controlled by additional dressing laser beams. Such studies not only can be very useful in better understanding the formation of spatial solitons but also have potential applications in signal processing.

Multi-component optical azimuthons of four-wave mixing

Ruimin Wang, Xing-Peng Wang, Zhenkun Wu +3 more

We report the multi-component optical azimuthons of four-wave mixing (FWM) composed of several modulated vortex beams, the so-called azimuthons, in V-type three-level and two-level atomic systems. We analyze the formation mechanisms of the FWM azimuthons theoretically and experimentally. In addition, we illustrate the interactions between the co-propagating azimuthon components. Finally, we also compare the stabilities of azimuthons in V-type three-level and two-level atomic systems.

Spatially dependent four-wave mixing in semiconductor quantum wells

Yufeng Zhang, Zhiping Wang, Jing Qiu +2 more

We propose a scheme to generate spatially dependent four-wave mixing (FWM) in an asymmetric semiconductor three-coupled-quantum-well nanostructure. By adjusting the detuning of the control field, one can effectively manipulate the FWM output field. Specifically, the vortex phase of the FWM field can be modulated. The detailed explanations based on the dispersion relation are given, which are in good agreement with our results. Furthermore, we perform the interference between the FWM field and the same-frequency Gaussian beam. Our results show that the interference patterns can also be modulated via the detuning of the control field, which may provide a way to observe helical phase modulation via the intensity measurement. This work may be useful for investigating the nonlinear optical phenomena based on orbital angular momentum light.

Coherent control of dressing interaction of sequential-doubly-dressed four-wave mixing

Ma Xiaoyu, Sang Suling

Abstract We investigate the coherent control of dressing interaction in four-wave mixing (FWM) in a Y-type four-level atomic system based on the dressed states theory. We study the density matrix equation acted by two dressing fields simultaneously governing FWM signal intensity and the eigenvalues under the dressed state formalism. It is shown that the peak position and intensity of Autler–Townes splitting both originate from the dressing interaction as the detuning of the probe field is scanned. Moreover, it is observed that the interaction could be controlled by the dressing fields. Such flexibly controlled nonlinear signal has potential applications in optical communication and quantum information processing.

Multidressing interaction of four-wave mixing image in three-level atomic system

Suling Sang, Huaibin Zheng, Zhiguo Wang +5 more

We demonstrate different dressed processes of four-wave mixing (FWM), as changing the powers of the probe, pump, and dressing fields, respectively, in ladder-type three-level system. It is demonstrated that scanning detuning of the dressing field can lead to the direct detection of the dressing effects and the interaction between the dressing fields, compared with scanning that of the probe field. Moreover, by respectively controlling the powers of the dressing, pump, and probe fields, the enhancement and suppression of FWM signals can be switched sensitively. Meanwhile, the spatial splitting in y direction of FWM signal due to the cross-phase modulation and electromagnetically induced gratings is observed, respectively. Such nonlinear signal with switchable enhancement has potential applications in optical switching, optical communication, and quantum information processing.

Controlling cascade dressing interaction of four-wave mixing image

Changbiao Li, Yanpeng Zhang, Huaibin Zheng +7 more

We report our observations on enhancement and suppression of spatial four-wave mixing (FWM) images and the interplay of four coexisting FWM processes in a two-level atomic system associating with three-level atomic system as comparison. The phenomenon of spatial splitting of the FWM signal has been observed in both x and y directions. Such FWM spatial splitting is induced by the enhanced cross-Kerr nonlinearity due to atomic coherence. The intensity of the spatial FWM signal can be controlled by an additional dressing field. Studies on such controllable beam splitting can be very useful in understanding spatial soliton formation and interactions, and in applications of spatial signal processing.
