Abstract

In this review, we describe recent developments in functional metamaterials based on coupled resonators. We first consider coupled resonator metamaterials that mimic electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We present a circuit model for EIT-like metamaterials and introduce a new coupled resonator in which the coupling is provided by a field gradient so that the group velocity can be varied by varying the incident angle. We then describe the principles for enhancing second harmonic generation (SHG) in nonlinear resonant metamaterials. Optical and microwave experiments of SHG in singly resonant metamaterials are presented. A method for further enhancing SHG using a doubly resonant metamaterial is also described.

Electromagnetically induced transparency metamaterials: theories, designs and applications

Lei Zhu, Liang Dong

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) stems from a quantum system, where an opaque atomic medium appears the narrow transparent state within a wide absorption area. This phenomenon can be achieved by quantum interference of pumping light and detecting light at different energy levels of transitions. In the generation process of EIT effect, in addition to transparent state, the atomic medium is usually accompanied with a strong dispersion effect, which will bright about a significant reduction of light velocity, thus realizing many important applications, such as slow light propagations. Although the EIT effect has many important applications, its application scenarios are greatly limited due to the fact that EIT realization usually requires specific and complicated conditions, such as refrigeration temperature, high intensity laser, etc. Recently, the analogue of EIT effect in metamaterial has attracted increasing attentions due to its advantages such as controllable room temperature and large operating bandwidth. Metamaterial analogue of EIT effect has become a new research focus. In this article, we review current research progresses on EIT metamaterials. Firstly, we describe the theoretical models for analyzing EIT metamaterials, including the mechanical oscillator model and the equivalent circuit model. Then, we describe the simulations, designs and experiments of passive EIT metamaterials with fixed structures and active EIT metamaterials with tunable elements. Furthermore, the applications of EIT metamaterials in the areas of slow lights, sensings, absorptions and other fields are also reviewed. Finally, the possible directions and key issues of future EIT metamaterial researches are prospected.

From electromagnetically induced transparency to absorption in planar optical metamaterials

Bo Na, Jinhui Shi, Chunying Guan +1 more

We theoretically investigate the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a planar metamaterial at optical frequency, which originates from destructive and constructive interference between dark and radiative elements. The metamaterial consists of two coupled resonators with different geometries. An EIT-like transparent window with low absorption is observed and found to be strongly affected by resonant states of the resonators. The transition between the EIT and EIA is achieved by changing the split width and coupling distance. The absorption is enhanced up to 2.5 times compared with the dipolar case. The excitation of the dark mode is very important for EIT-and EIA-like responses of the proposed metamaterial. The EIT and EIA phenomena offer a potential method for manipulating electromagnetic response in metamaterial-based devices.

Phase characteristics of an electromagnetically induced transparency analogue in coupled resonant systems

Xiaoyan Zhou, Lin Zhang, Wei Pang +3 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and EIT-like effects have been investigated in a wide variety of coupled resonant systems. Here, a classification of the phase characteristics of the EIT-like spectral responses is presented. Newly identified phase responses reveal unexplored operation regimes of EIT-like systems. Taking advantage of these new phase regimes, one can obtain group delay, dispersion and nonlinearity properties greatly enhanced by almost one order of magnitude, compared to the traditionally constructed EIT-like devices, all of which breaks the fundamental limitation (e.g. delay–bandwidth product) intrinsic to atomic EIT and EIT-like effects. Optical devices and electrical circuits are analyzed as examples showing the universality of our finding. We show that cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED)-based quantum phase gates can be greatly improved to achieve a phase shift of π . The new phase characteristics are also believed to be useful to build novel doubly resonant devices in quantum information based cavity QED, optomechanics and metamaterials.

Third-harmonic generation in resonant-metamaterial-based photonic-band-gap materials

Jolly Jose

We present large enhancement of the nonlinear wave mixing process (third-harmonic generation) in photonic-band-gap materials made of negative and positive index media, at the band edge of the zero-$\overline{n}$ band gap. Incorporating metamaterial-based, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)--like resonance in the nonlinear layer leads to unprecedented line narrowing of the generated third harmonic. This scheme permits the mapping of the narrow EIT resonance at the fundamental frequency to the generated third-harmonic frequency with even narrower line shape.

Slowing down the light by using coupled stereoscopic dielectric metamaterials

Cheng‐Kuang Chen, Ta‐Jen Yen

New designs "meta-atom" and "meta-material" composed from all-dielectric resonators with high Q and low loss, this kind metamaterial is coupled from propagating plane wave and generates electromagnetic response like electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic vapor. The "meta-atom" or "meta-molecular" are not only workable in room temperature but also enable three dimensional ommidirectionally incident with superposition stacking. Meanwhile, the EIT-like via dielectric metamaterial with high transmittance, dramatic index change and tunable operating frequency. The simulation result agrees the possibility electromagnetically induced transparency -like bulk exists from microwave to THz region.

Manipulation of electromagnetically-induced transparency in planar metamaterials based on phase coupling

Xing-Ri Jin, Yuehui Lu, Jinwoo Park +7 more

We experimentally demonstrated a controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like spectral response at microwave frequencies in a planar metamaterial consisting of two identical split-ring resonators (SRRs) with side-by-side symmetry. In our scheme, phase coupling between the two SRRs (serving as the bright mode), which were excited strongly by the incident wave, was employed, and it was found that the EIT-like spectral response could be controlled by simply adjusting the incident angle. Thus, our scheme may be used for electromagnetic-wave switching. A high group index for slow-light application and a high quality factor could be obtained by simply controlling the incident angle.
