Abstract

The influence of the imaginary part of nonlinear coefficient on optical bistability in an A-D (Acceptor-Donor) substituted azobenzene-doped poly(methya methacrylate) (PMMA) thin film was studied theoretically and experimentally. The observations of the characteristics of the bistability were essentially consistent with the theoretical predications.

All-optical bistability in doped-polymer film waveguides

Hui‐Tian Wang, Peixian Ye, Ling Qiu +2 more

All-optical bistability was observed in thin-film waveguides made with acceptor-donor substituted azobenzene-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer. Input-output curves with hysteresis characteristics were measured. The origin of the bistability was attributed to nonlinear coupling between a prism and a doped-polymer waveguide. An approximately theoretical analysis was introduced. Theoretical predictions were qualitatively consistent with experimental results.

Low-power and broadband optical bistability by excitation of surface plasmons in doped polymer film

Zhanxiang Zhang, Hui‐Tian Wang, Peixian Ye +2 more

The low-power and broadband optical bistability in an acceptor-donor-substituted azobenzene-doped polymethyl methacrylate thin film, which relies on the excitation of surface plasmons with a cw laser of several tens of milliwatt power, is studied experimentally and theoretically. The observations on the characteristics of the bistability are essentially consistent with the theoretical predictions.

Observation of Optical Bistabilities in a Doped Polymer Thin Film Quasi-waveguide

Wang Huitian, 董凤忠 Dong Fengzhong, Zhanxiang Zhang +5 more

Optical bistability was observed and studied in the output of reflected beam as well as in that of m -lines in a doped polymer thin film quasi-waveguide. The physical origin was demonstrated to be the existence of a mode spectrum and the high third-order nonlinearity of the polymer film. It was also observed for the first time that the intensity variation of the reflected beam and the m -line in the hysteresis loops are complementary to each other.

Intrinsic optical bistability in doped polymer

H. Soufi, Hamid Pashaei Adl, M.H. Majles Ara +1 more

One of the most interesting and applicable effects of nonlinear optics is optical bistability. This phenomenon is exhibited by certain resonant optical structures where it is possible to have two stable steady transmission states for the device, depending on the history of the input. Such a bistable device may be useful for optical computing elements as a result of its memory characteristics. Optical bistability behaviour is usually observed by inserting a nonlinear matter inside a Fabry–Perot interferometer. But in this study, it was shown that this can be achieved without the application of any optical resonator. Two laser beams were used to interact with the photorefractive media (doped PMMA polymer) which resulted in the bistability of the intensity of transmitted wave. Feedback was provided by a periodic grating created in the photorefractive polymer PMMA.

Observation of Optical Bistability Hysteresis Loop with Surface Waves in Doped Polymer Film

Peixian Ye, Zuhe Yu, Zhanxiang Zhang +2 more

Optical bistability hysteresis loop has been observed experimentally with a setup using prism excitation of surface wave in a doped polymer thin film. A simple model has been developed to analyze its operation. The observed bistability hysteresis loop can be explained in terms of surface plasmon excitation and laser induced refractive index variations.
