Abstract

The non-equilibrium phase transition in a ferromagnetic Ising model is investigated by use of a new type of effective field theory (EFT) which correctly accounts for all the single-site kinematic relations by differential operator technique. In the presence of a time dependent oscillating external field, with decrease of the temperature the system undergoes a dynamic phase transition, which is characterized by the period averaged magnetization Q , from a dynamically disordered state Q = 0 to the dynamically ordered state Q ≠ 0. The results of the dynamic phase transition point T c determined from the behavior of the dynamic magnetization and the Liapunov exponent provided by EFT are improved than that of the standard mean field theory (MFT), especially for the one dimensional lattice where the standard MFT gives incorrect result of T c = 0 even in the case of zero external field.

Phase transitions in a three-dimensional kinetic spin-1/2 Ising model with random field: Effective-field-theory study

Emanuel Costabile, J. Ricardo de Sousa

The dynamical phase transitions of the kinetic Ising model in the presence of a random magnetic field with a bimodal probability distribution is studied by using effective-field theory (EFT) with correlations. We have used a Glauber-type stochastic dynamic to describe the time evolution of the system, where the system strongly depends on the H≡√<H(i)(2)>(c) root mean square deviation of the magnetic field. The EFT dynamic equation is given for the simple cubic lattice (z=6), and the dynamic order parameter is calculated. The system presents ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states for low and high temperatures, respectively. Our results predict first-order transitions at low temperatures and large disorder strengths, which corresponds to the existence of a nonequilibrium tricritical point (TCP) in a phase diagram in the T-H plane. We compare the results with the equilibrium phase diagram, where only the first-order line is different. Our qualitative results are compatible with recent Monte Carlo simulations.

Effective-Field Theory for Kinetic Ising Model on Honeycomb Lattice

Shi Xiao-ling, Guozhu Wei

As an analytical method, the effective-field theory (EFT) is used to study the dynamical response of the kinetic Ising model in the presence of a sinusoidal oscillating field. The effective-field equations of motion of the average magnetization are given for the honeycomb lattice (Z = 3). The Liapunov exponent λ is calculated for discussing the stability of the magnetization and it is used to determine the phase boundary. In the field amplitude h 0 /ZJ-temperature T/ZJ plane, the phase boundary separating the dynamic ordered and the disordered phase has been drawn. In contrast to previous analytical results that predicted a tricritical point separating a dynamic phase boundary line of continuous and discontinuous transitions, we find that the transition is always continuous. There is inconsistency between our results and previous analytical results, because they do not introduce sufficiently strong fluctuations.

Dynamic behavior of the spin-1/2 Ising Model in an oscillating external magnetic field

Ümüt Temizer

The dynamic phase transition (DPT) temperatures and the dynamic phase diagrams are obtained for spin-1/2 Ising system under the presence of a time-dependent oscillating external magnetic field using the method that was purposed by Meijer and Edwards [ANNALS of PHYSICS, 54, 240 (1969)] within the framework of the Bethe or constant coupling theory. The time variation of magnetization is investigated to find the phases in the system. Thermal behavior of the average magnetization is studied to characterize the nature (continuous and discontinuous) of transitions and to obtain the dynamic phase transition temperatures. The DPT temperatures are found always a second-order; hence there can be no tricritical point separating lines of first- and second-order dynamic phase transitions. This result agrees with the dynamic Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations of a two-dimensional kinetic spin-1/2 Ising model in an oscillating external magnetic field.

Non-equilibrium phase transition in the kinetic Ising model driven by a propagating magnetic field wave

Muktish Acharyya

The two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in the presence of a propagating magnetic field wave (with a well-defined frequency and wavelength) was studied by Monte Carlo simulation. This study differs from similar earlier studies, because in earlier studies the oscillating magnetic field was considered to be uniform in space. The time averaged magnetization over a full cycle (the time period) of the propagating magnetic field acted as the dynamic order parameter. The dynamical phase transition was observed. The temperature variation of the dynamic order parameter, the mean square deviation of the dynamic order parameter, the dynamic specific heat and the derivative of the dynamic order parameter were studied. The mean square deviation of the dynamic order parameter and the dynamic specific heat show sharp maxima near the transition point. The derivative of the dynamic order parameter shows a sharp minimum near the transition point. The transition temperature is found to depend also on the speed of propagation of the magnetic field wave.

Conjugate field and fluctuation-dissipation relation for the dynamic phase transition in the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model

Daniel T. Robb, Per Arne Rikvold, Andreas Berger +1 more

The two-dimensional kinetic Ising model, when exposed to an oscillating applied magnetic field, has been shown to exhibit a nonequilibrium, second-order dynamic phase transition (DPT), whose order parameter Q is the period-averaged magnetization. It has been established that this DPT falls in the same universality class as the equilibrium phase transition in the two-dimensional Ising model in zero applied field. Here we study the scaling of the dynamic order parameter with respect to a nonzero, period-averaged, magnetic "bias" field, H(b) for a DPT produced by a square-wave applied field. We find evidence that the scaling exponent, delta(d), of H(b) at the critical period of the DPT is equal to the exponent for the critical isotherm, delta(e), in the equilibrium Ising model. This implies that H(b) is a significant component of the field conjugate to Q. A finite-size scaling analysis of the dynamic order parameter above the critical period provides further support for this result. We also demonstrate numerically that, for a range of periods and values of H(b) in the critical region, a fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR), with an effective temperature T(eff)(T,P,H0) depending on the period, and possibly the temperature and field amplitude, holds for the variables Q and H(b). This FDR justifies the use of the scaled variance of Q as a proxy for the nonequilibrium susceptibility, partial differential Q/partial differential H(b), in the critical region.

Dynamic phase transitions in the kinetic mixed spin-1/2 and spin-5/2 Ising model under a time-dependent oscillating magnetic field

Bayram Deviren, Mustafa Keskín, Osman Canko

We calculate the dynamic phase transition (DPT) temperatures and present the dynamic phase diagrams in the kinetic mixed spin-1/2 and spin-5/2 Ising model under the presence of a time-dependent oscillating external magnetic field. We employ the Glauber transition rates to construct the set of mean-field dynamic equations. The time variation of the average magnetizations and the thermal behavior of the dynamic magnetizations are investigated, extensively. The nature (continuous or discontinuous) of the transitions is characterized by studying the thermal behaviors of the dynamic magnetizations. The DPT points are obtained and the phase diagrams are presented in two different planes. Phase diagrams contain four fundamental phases and three coexistence or mixed phases, which strongly depend on interaction parameters. The phase diagrams are discussed and a comparison is made with the results of the other mixed spin Ising systems.
