One-dimensional Hubbard model with first- and second-neighbor hopping

Abstract

The one-dimensional Hubbard model with first- and second-neighbor hopping, t1 and t2, with t2≊t1/(2)1/2 and large repulsion U, is proposed as a testing ground of Anderson’s idea that the existence of an resonating valence bond ground state in the half-filled-band case will show superconductivity when a finite concentration of holes is introduced. Interestingly, our preliminary calculations in the U=∞ limit for small chains have revealed a new mechanism for enhancement of singlet pairing: We find that for t2<0 the ground state is a singlet, and, for t2<0 and ‖t2/t1‖≪1, the nearest-neighbor extended-singlet-pairing correlation function becomes enhanced appreciably as the temperature decreases below t2.

Superconductivity and antiferromagnetism for an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian: Role of correlated hopping in a single-band model

G.A. Lara, G. G. Cabrera

An extended Hubbard model for a single band, including Coulomb repulsion and correlated hopping between nearest neighbors, is studied using a generalized mean-field approach. Antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are probed for arbitrary occupation number, near and away from half filling. Binding of pairs in the superconducting state of this purely repulsive model is mediated by the correlated hopping in the form of a covalent-bond configuration, with partial intrasite and intersite pairings. A region of coexistence is conjectured, the superconductivity being suppressed by the saturation of the staggered magnetic moment. Singlet superconducting nonmagnetic states are obtained for the almost-empty- or full-band cases. On the other hand, antiferromagnetism induces mixed s- and p-type superconductivities in the neighborhood of half filling.

Two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping

H. Q. Lin, J. E. Hirsch

We study the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor (t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${t}_{2}$) hopping and on-site repulsion U. We first calculate the mean-field phase diagram as a function of band filling and U. Because of the Van Hove singularity in the density of states, we find a ferromagnetic phase extending to zero U for certain band filling. For the half-filled band case, antiferromagnetism sets in at a finite value of U if ${t}_{2}$\ensuremath{\ne}0. We study the behavior of spin-spin correlation functions for small lattices of up to N=64 atoms using Monte Carlo simulations, as well as exact diagonalization for N=4. Our results show enhanced ferromagnetic correlations in some regions, but apparently no ferromagnetic long-range order. In the half-filled case, our numerical results are consistent with a nonzero critical U. For a non-half-filled band our results suggest that there is no long-range order.

Small-cluster calculations for the simple and extended Hubbard models

J. Callaway, D. P. Chen, D. G. Kanhere +1 more

The single-band Hubbard model (both with and without first-neighbor interactions) is studied by exact diagonalization on several one- and two-dimensional clusters, ranging from four to nine sites, including rings and arrangements of squares. Occupancies include the half-filled band (one electron per site) and configurations with one and two holes in the half-filled band. Ground-state properties are determined for a wide range of parameters. We discuss the phase diagram in the (U,V) plane and consider spin, charge, and pairing correlations. The binding of a pair of holes is investigated. Circumstances in which binding and pairing are enhanced by first-neighbor interactions are described.

Second-Neighbor Hopping Effects in the Two-Dimensional Attractive Hubbard Model

Rodrigo A. Fontenele, Nathan Vasconcelos, Natanael C. Costa +2 more

The emergence of superconductivity (SC) in lattice models, such as the attractive Hubbard one, has renewed interest since the realization of cold-atom experiments. However, reducing the temperature in these experiments is a bottleneck; therefore, investigating how to increase the energy scale for SC is crucial to cold atoms. In view of this, we examine the effects of next-nearest-neighbor hoppings (t′) on the pairing properties of the attractive Hubbard model in a square lattice. To this end, we analyze the model through unbiased Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for fixed density n=0.87, and perform finite-size scaling analysis to the thermodynamic limit. As our main result, we notice that the existence of further hopping channels leads to an enhancement of the pairing correlations, which, in turn, increases the ground-state order parameter Δ. Finally, at finite temperatures, for t′/t≠0, this enhancement of pairing correlations leads to an increase in the critical temperature Tc. That is, the fine-tuning of second-neighbor hoppings increases the energy scales for SC, and may be a route by which cold-atom experiments can achieve such a phase and to help us further understand the nature of this phenomenon.

EFFECT OF CORRELATED-HOPPING INTERACTION ON A ONE-DIMENSIONAL EXTENDED HUBBARD MODEL WITH SPIN-EXCHANGE INTERACTION

Hanqin Ding, Jun Zhang

By using the field-theoretical techniques combining bosonization with renormalization group, we study a one-dimensional (1D) model of interacting electrons with on-site repulsion (U > 0), nearest-neighbor (nn) exchange (J) and correlated-hopping (t2, t3) interactions at weak coupling. In the case of a half-filled band, the two-body interaction t2 does not influence phase diagram of the model, while the presence of three-body interaction t3 makes the physics of the system highly non-trivial. By a Hartree–Fock decoupling, the effects of t3 bring about hopping of pairs, V-like (nn Coulomb interaction) and isotropic exchange terms in the reduced model Hamiltonian. Interestingly, a negative t3 provides a possibility for the occurrence of the triplet superconductivity in 1D system with purely repulsive interactions (U, J > 0). The ground state phase diagram including the insulating and superconducting phases is discussed analytically.

Numerical simulation of the resonant valence-bond state

J. Callaway

The resonant valence-bond state, proposed by Anderson as a possible ground state in certain antiferromagnetic systems, and relevant to the problem of high-temperature superconductivity, is studied by numerical simulation on a finite cluster. It is found to be the ground state of a simple Hubbard model with a half-filled band on a centered hexagon for a range of intermediate values of the electron interaction parameter. A singlet ground state is obtained away from the half-filled limit for the same parameters.
