Abstract

Formally exact continued fraction expressions for the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the hamiltonian describing the interaction of a single atom with a single quantized field mode in the electric dipole approximation are presented. Explicit expressions for the eigen-solutions and the time-dependent properties are given in some special cases. Comparisons are made with the corresponding rotating wave solutions.

A continued fraction solution to the problem of a single atom interacting with a single radiation mode in the electric dipole approximation

S. Swain

Difference equations are derived for the Laplace transforms of the time dependent probability amplitudes of a system consisting of a single photon interacting with a single two-level atom in the electric dipole approximation. Formally exact continued fraction solutions of these difference equations are obtained and applied to the problems of stimulated and spontaneous emission and absorption of radiation.

An exact analysis of spontaneous emission by a single two level atom in the rotating wave approximation. I. Analytic results

S. Swain

The problem of a single two level atom in its excited state, placed in a cavity in which no photons are present initially, and interacting with N modes of the electromagnetic field is solved exactly in the electric dipole, rotating wave approximation. Expressions for the energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors are derived, and an exact representation for the time dependent wavefunction of the system is given. These quantities are evaluated analytically for N=1,2 and 3, and the time dependent properties of the system for these values of N are investigated and discussed.

Continued fraction perturbation theory: applications to radiative processes in the dipole approximation

S. Swain

A general perturbation procedure is described for writing down the contributions to any order for the probability of a quantum system described by a time-independent Hamiltonian making a transition from an arbitrary initial state to an arbitrary final state. The results are expressed in terms of certain propagators which involve continued fractions, so that some processes are summed to all orders. The general theory is then applied to a single multilevel atom interacting with any number of modes of the electromagnetic field in the electric dipole approximation. The fundamental theory is considered primarily but a detailed discussion is given of spontaneous and stimulated emission. Expressions for the lineshape are derived incorporating the generalized Lamb shifts and damping constants.

Exact Solution for an N -Molecule—Radiation-Field Hamiltonian

M. T. Tavis, F.W. Cummings

The exact solution for a problem of $N$ identical two-level molecules interacting through a dipole coupling with a single-mode quantized radiation field at resonance is given. Approximate expressions for the eigenvectors and eigenvalues for the ground and low-lying excited states, as well as the most highly excited states, are developed and compared with the exact results.

An exact analysis of spontaneous emission by a single two level atom in the rotating wave approximation II. Numerical results

S. Swain

For Pt. I see ibid. vol.5, p.1587(1972). The problem considered is that of spontaneous emission by a single, two level atom which interacts with N modes of the electromagnetic field in the electric dipole, rotating wave approximation. The equations derived in Pt. I are solved numerically for N = 4,5,10,11,20,21 and 201 to find the eigenvalues and various time dependent properties of the system. The connection between this approach and conventional Wigner-Weisskopf theory is discussed.

Interaction of two two-level atoms with a single-mode quantized radiation field

M. S. Iqbal, S. Mahmood, M. S. K. Razmi +1 more

Interactions of two two-level atoms with a single-mode quantized radiation field are studied, and exact expressions for the atom-field probability amplitudes in the rotating-wave approximation are presented. These solutions are employed in the study of the quantum collapse and revivals of the atomic coherence.
