Abstract

The spectra of cesium 6P3/2 - 8S1/2 excited-state transition have been obtained using double resonance optical-pumping (DROP) technique in a room-temperature vapor cell, and have shown a much better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared with that using the traditional optical-optical double resonance (OODR) method. Furthermore, the line-width of DROP spectra is obviously narrowed by electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) effect in cesium 6S1/2 F=4 - 6P3/2 F'=5 - 8S1/2 F''=4 transitions. Finally, such DROP spectrum of 6P3/2 F'=5 - 8S1/2 F''=4 transition with a high SNR and a narrow line-width is applied into frequency stabilization of a 795 nm external-cavity diode laser, and the residual frequency fluctuation is ~ 600 kHz within 500 s.

We demonstrate the spectra of 87Rb 5S1/2-5P3/2-4D3/2(4D5/2) transitions by utilizing the double-resonance optical-pumping(DROP) and optical-optical double-resonance(OODR) techniques, respectively. The DROP spectrum, compared with the traditional OODR spectrum, shows a much better signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and narrower linewidth. When frequency of 1 529 nm external-cavity diode laser is stabilized to the DROP spectrum of 87Rb 5P3/2(F′=3)-4D3/2(F″=3) transition, the preliminary result of residual frequency jitter after being locked is~0.65 MHz within 300 s.This result is clearly much better than that in case of frequency stabilized by using OODR scheme(~1.8 MHz within 300 s).

We demonstrate the spectra of 87Rb 5S1/2 - 5P3/2 - 4D3/2 transitions by utilizing the double-resonance optical-pumping (DROP) and optical-optical double-resonance (OODR) techniques, respectively. The DROP spectrum, compared with the traditional OODR spectrum, show a much better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Paying special attention to the influence of alignment of lasers where the coupling and probe beams are counter-propagation and co-propagation on DROP spectrum, so as to further narrow the spectral width by means of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). When -the frequency of 1.5μm fiber-pigtailed butterfly-type distributed-feedback (DFB) diode laser is stabilized to the DROP spectrum of 87Rb 5P3/2 - 4D3/2 transition, the preliminary result of residual frequency jitter after stabilization is ~ ±1.3 MHz within 60 s.

Off-resonant double-resonance optical-pumping spectra and their application in a multiphoton cesium magneto-optical trap

Baodong Yang, Jun He, Junmin Wang

We present an investigation of double-resonance optical pumping (DROP) spectra under the condition of single-photon frequency detuning based on a cesium 6S 1/2 –6P 3/2 –8S 1/2 ladder-type system with a room-temperature vapor cell. Two DROP peaks are found, and their origins are explored. One peak has a narrow linewidth due to the atomic coherence for a counterpropagating configuration; the other peak has a broad linewidth, owing to the spontaneous decay for a copropagating configuration. This kind of off-resonant DROP spectrum can be used to control and offset-lock a laser frequency to a transition between excited states. We apply this technique to a multiphoton cesium magneto-optical trap, which can efficiently trap atoms on both red and blue sides of the two-photon resonance.

Double-resonance optical-pumping effect and ladder-type electromagnetically induced transparency signal without Doppler background in cesium atomic vapour cell

Baodong Yang, Jing Gao, Qiangbing Liang +3 more

In a Doppler-broadened ladder-type cesium atomic system (6S 1/2 -6P 3/2 -8S 1/2 ), this paper characterizes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different experimental arrangements, and investigates the influence of the double-resonance optical-pumping (DROP) effect on EIT in both arrangements. When the probe laser is weak, DROP is explicitly suppressed. When the probe laser is moderate, population of the intermediate level (6P 3/2 F ' = 5) is remarkable, therefore DROP is mixed with EIT. An interesting bimodal spectrum with the broad component due to DROP and the narrow part due to EIT has been clearly observed in cesium 6S 1/2 F = 4−6P 3/2 F ' = 5−8S 1/2 F '' = 4 transitions.

Investigation of the two-color polarization spectroscopy between the excited states based on cesium atoms

Jinfang Zhang, Ya-Na Ren, Junmin Wang +1 more

Two-color polarization spectroscopy (TCPS) of cesium 6S1/2-6P3/2-8S1/2 (852.3 nm + 794.6 nm) ladder-type system in a room-temperature vapor cell are investigated. The frequency of 852.3 nm laser used as a pump beam is locked on one of the hyperfine transitions between the ground state 6S1/2 and excited state 6P3/2 by the saturated absorption spectroscopy technique, which can populate some atoms on the 6P3/2 excited state and induce anisotropy in the atomic medium. The frequency of 794.6 nm laser serving as a probe beam is scanned across the whole 6P3/2→8S1/2 transition to ascertain this anisotropy, and thus the TCPS is obtained. In experiment, we measure and analyse the influence of frequency detuning of 852.3 nm pump laser on TCPS, and especially reveal that some of hyperfine energy levels of intermediate excited state 6P3/2, which has no direct interaction with the 852.3 nm pump laser, are also populated by a small fraction of atoms with a specific speed in the direction of pump laser beam due to Doppler effect, so they also have contribution to the TCPS when the 794.6 nm probe laser is scanned to the resonance transition line between the 6P3/2 and 8S1/2 states after the Doppler frequency shift has been considered. In addition, we prove that the atomic coherence like electromagnetically induced transparency effect obviously results in a narrower line width of TCPS in the case of counter-propagating experimental configuration than that in the case of pump beam co-propagating with the probe beam in the Cs vapor cell. Finally, we apply the TCPS with dispersive shaped feature to frequency stabilization with no modulation, and the frequency fluctuations of 794.6 nm laser are ~0.5 MHz and ~9.2 MHz for the frequency-locking and free running in ~225 s, respectively. The above research work is expected to play a role in precisely measuring the atomic energy level structure and its related hyperfine structure constant (magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole coupling constants), and also in stabilizing the laser frequency to the excited state transition especially for the optical fiber communication, two-color laser cooling/trapping neutral atoms, optical filter, etc.

Double resonance optical pumping spectrum and its application for frequency stabilization of a laser diode

Han Seb Moon, W. K. Lee, L. Lee +1 more

We present double resonance optical pumping (DROP) spectra for the 5P3∕2–4D3∕2 transition and the 5P3∕2–4D5∕2 transition of R87b and we use these spectra for frequency stabilization in the 1.5μm region. The spectra, compared to the conventional double resonance spectrum, show a good signal-to-noise ratio and a narrow spectral linewidth for laser frequency stabilization. The different intensities of the hyperfine states were attributed to the different rates of double resonance optical pumping into the other ground state. When we stabilized the frequency of a 1.5μm laser diode to the DROP spectrum, the best frequency stability was 1×10−11 after 100s.
