Abstract

Dynamics of a system of N three-level atoms interacting with two coherent fields is described by SU(3) coherent states. It is shown that these states exhibit reduced quantum fluctuations. Resulting transient squeezing in the atomic system is discussed.

INFORMATION ENTROPY AND SPIN-SQUEEZING IN ATOMIC THREE-LEVEL SYSTEMS

M. Reboiro, Osvaldo Civitarese, Diego Tielas

We consider the problem of an atomic three-level system in interaction with a radiation field. The time evolution of the system, in atomic ladder and Λ configurations, is solved exactly assuming a coherent-state as the initial atomic state. We calculate the atomic spin-squeezing, the atomic entropy-squeezing, and their variances. We show that the spin-squeezing and the entropy-squeezing exhibit similar time dependence.

TWO-MODE ENTANGLEMENT AND SQUEEZING IN A THREE-LEVEL CASCADE ATOMIC SYSTEM

Yunxia Ping

The generation and evolution of entanglement and squeezing for the two-mode fields are discussed in a cascade three-level atomic system. Two photons of a strong external pump field induce atomic coherence between the top and bottom levels. The dynamics of this system in the presence of cavity losses is studied. It is shown that entanglement and squeezing between the two modes increase initially, then decrease and eventually disappear. The periods of them are extended with the increasing of the pump field intensity. The effects of the cavity losses on squeezing and entanglement are also discussed.

Coherent states, squeezed fluctuations, and the SU(2) am SU(1,1) groups in quantum-optics applications

K. Wódkiewicz, Joseph H. Eberly

The theory of generalized coherent states associated with the SU(2) and SU(1,1) Lie algebras is discussed and applied in an investigation of possible reductions of fluctuations. In the framework of a system of N two-level atoms the squeezing of angular-momentum [SU(2)] fluctuations is exhibited for optical coherent transients involving the photon echo. The SU(1,1) fluctuations are discussed and established for general two-photon processes involving dynamical variables different from the creation and annihilation operators.

Squeezing and trapping in three-level atoms

F. A. M. de Oliveira, Bryan J. Dalton, P. L. Knight

We discuss the phase-sensitive noise properties of fluorescence emitted by three-level atoms coherently excited by two laser fields, using both undressed and dressed uncoupled-state representations. The occurrence of steady-state squeezing is found to be highly sensitive to relaxation processes between the two-photon resonant levels. For purely radiative decay from the upper level, and no lower-state relaxation, the population is susceptible to coherent population trapping. Near two-photon resonance, the atom is optically pumped into a nonabsorbing (trapped) superposition state, which, although it reduces upper-level population, also leads to an interference cancellation of dipole moments and to suppression of squeezing. Lower-level relaxation unbalances this interference and restores the squeezing to some extent. Transient squeezing is also predicted in the time-dependent fluorescence.

HIGHER-ORDER FLUCTUATIONS AND THEIR SQUEEZING OF ANGULAR MOMENTUM IN ATOMIC COHERENT STATES

Chuan-hua Dong, 上海大学物理系,上海200072

The second-,fourth-and sixth-order fluctuations have been discussed by making use of- SU-(2)Lie algebra. On the basis of higher-order uncertainty relation, the definition of higher-order squeezing for the fluctuations of angular momentum has been put forward. In particular, the second-,fourth-and sixth-order squeezing in atomic coherent states are investigated. These methods and definition can be used for studying much higher-order squeezing. The higher-order squeezing can be generalized to the fluctuations of atomic variances thereby.
