Abstract

We prove that in the fast rotating regime, the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii energy describing the state of a Bose Einstein condensate can be reduced to a two-dimensional problem and that the vortex lines are almost straight. Additionally, we prove that the minimum of this two-dimensional problem can be sought in a reduced space corresponding to the first eigenspace of an elliptic operator. This space is called the Lowest Landau level and is of infinite dimension

Annular Bose-Einstein Condensates in the Lowest Landau Level

Nicolas Rougerie

A rotating superfluid such as a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is usually described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) model. An important issue is to determine from this model the properties of the quantized vortices that a superfluid nucleates when set into rotation. In this paper we address the minimization of a two-dimensional GP energy functional describing a rotating annular BEC. In a certain limit, it is physically relevant to restrict the minimization to the lowest Landau level, that is, the first eigenspace of the Ginzburg–Landau operator. Taking the particular structure of this space into account, we obtain theoretical results concerning the vortices of the condensate. We also compute the vortices’ locations by a numerical minimization procedure. We find that they lie on a distorted lattice and that multiple quantized vortices appear in the central hole of low matter density.

Vortex patterns in a fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

Amandine Aftalion, Xavier Blanc, Jean Dalibard

For a fast rotating condensate in a harmonic trap, we investigate the structure of the vortex lattice using wave functions minimizing the Gross-Pitaevskii energy in the lowest Landau level. We find that the minimizer of the energy in the rotating frame has a distorted vortex lattice for which we plot the typical distribution. We compute analytically the energy of an infinite regular lattice and of a class of distorted lattices. We find the optimal distortion and relate it to the decay of the wave function. Finally, we generalize our method to other trapping potentials.

Vortex lattices in fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensates between the Thomas-Fermi and the lowest-Landau-level regimes

Zhongzhou Chen, Changru Ma, Yong-li Ma

We present an explicit analytical analysis of the ground state of vortex lattice structures, based on a minimization of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional in a fast rotating Bose-Einstein condensate between the Thomas-Fermi and the lowest-Landau-level regimes. By a Bogoliubov-like transformation we find that the coarse-grained average of the atomic density varies as ${[1\ensuremath{-}({x}^{2}+{y}^{2})∕{R}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{2}]}^{3∕2}$ in the $xy$ plane, and that the vortices form an almost regular triangular lattice. Our variational calculation is quantitatively and qualitatively consistent with recent analytical, numerical, and experimental data.

Lowest-Landau-level vortex structure of a Bose-Einstein condensate rotating in a harmonic plus quartic trap

Xavier Blanc, Nicolas Rougerie

We investigate the vortex patterns appearing in a two-dimensional annular Bose-Einstein condensate rotating in a quadratic plus quartic confining potential. We show that in the limit of small anharmonicity the Gross-Pitaevskii energy can be minimized among the lowest-Landau-level wave functions and use this particular form to obtain theoretical results in the spirit of Aftalion et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 011601(R) (2006)]. In particular, we show that the vortex pattern is infinite but not uniform. We also compute numerically the complete vortex structure: It is an Abrikosov lattice strongly distorted near the edges of the condensate with multiply quantized vortices appearing at the center of the trap.

Yrast line of a rapidly rotating Bose gas: Gross-Pitaevskii regime

Élliott H. Lieb, Robert Seiringer, Jakob Yngvason

We consider an ultracold rotating Bose gas in a harmonic trap close to the critical angular velocity, so that the system can be considered to be confined to the lowest Landau level. With this assumption we prove that the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional accurately describes the ground-state energy of the corresponding $N$-body Hamiltonian with contact interaction provided the total angular momentum $L$ is much less than ${N}^{2}$. While the Gross-Pitaevskii energy is always an obvious variational upper bound to the ground-state energy, a more refined analysis is needed to establish it as an exact lower bound. We also discuss the question of Bose-Einstein condensation in the parameter range considered. Coherent states together with inequalities in spaces of analytic functions are the main technical tools.
