Abstract

We carry out a theoretical analysis of Kerr bistability in a double-coupler optical fiber loop resonator in a case of two coexisting input optical fields, and we propose a set-reset (S-R) flip-flop operation that uses two input ports. We found that in the optimum case set and reset operation can be achieved at relatively low optical input powers.

Kerr bistability in optical fiber loop resonators with a 3 × 3 fiber coupler

Y. H. Ja

Abstract A theoretical study of bistability caused by the Kerr effect in two types of optical fiber loop resonators connected to a 3 × 3 coupler is carried out. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fiber and the coupler is investigated and presented as graphs. The bistability offers the possibility of using these fiber loop resonators as optical logic gates, memories, switches, and differential amplifiers. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.

Bistability and all-optical flip–flop with active microring resonator

Qiliang Li, Hongliang Yuan, Xianghong Tang

In this work, we study the bistability of an active nonlinear microring resonator and design a flip-flop based on the active microring resonator. In the presence of nonlinear and linear loss, we use Er-doped gain medium in the microring to obtain gain to compensate for the loss of the resonator. Both analytical and numerical methods are used to solve the propagation in the microring with double couplers, and we obtain the hysteresis loops of the microring. The results obtained by the two methods reveal that, in the presence of nonlinearity in microring resonators, the system exhibits bistability, and the gain in the microring leads to a decrease of the bias power when the active microring is taken as a bistable switcher. Basing on the bistability of the microring, we realize a set-reset flip-flop by adding a positive or negative feedback onto the bias. We also find that the duration of the set and reset pulses must exceed the field buildup time of the microring if we want to achieve the switching of the bias signal. In our design, the duration time is about 2 ps.

All-optical set-reset flip-flop by nonlinear coupling of microring resonators

Here had been analyzed the coupling of microring resonators in the presence of Kerr effect. The effects of nonlinear coupling on optical bistability of microring resonators are investigated too. This result provides a technique to designing an "all-optical flip-flop circuit".

Phase-Switched All-Optical Flip-Flops Using Two-Input Bistable Resonators

Brian A. Daniel, Govind Prasad Agrawal

We show that switching between the two stable states of an optical flip-flop, made using a two-input Kerr resonator, can be realized through pure phase modulation. The proposed switching mechanism is compatible with cross-phase modulation induced by set and reset pulses for realization of an ultrafast, passive, all-optical memory element.

Multiple bistability in an optical-fiber double-ring resonator utilizing the Kerr effect

Y.H. Ju

We present a theoretical study of multiple bistability in an optical-fiber double-ring resonator. The multiple bistability is caused by the optical Kerr effect, which modulates the refractive index of the fiber. The dependence of the multiple bistability on various parameters of the fibers and the couplers is investigated.>

Kerr bistability in a 3 × 3 coupler optical fiber ring resonator

Y. H. Ja

We present a theoretical study of bistability in an optical fiber ring resonator connected to a 3 × 3 fiber coupler. The bistability is caused by the Kerr effect when the ring resonator is working in the nonlinear regime. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fiber and the coupler is investigated.
