Abstract

In this paper, we generate the Lax pair of the nonconservative Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation with time-dependent linear and harmonic oscillator potentials and construct a multisoliton solution using gauge transformation. We show how an interplay between the dispersion coefficient, scattering length and atomic feeding can suitably be exploited to remote control the dynamics of solitons, thereby generating favorable profiles of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs), notable among them being the matter wave similaritons.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a time-dependent trap

Vaduganathan Ramesh Kumar, R. Radha, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi

In this paper, we generate the Lax pair for the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time-dependent scattering length in the presence of a confining or expulsive harmonic time-dependent trap. We then exploit the Lax pair profitably to construct multisoliton solutions using gauge transformation from a trivial input solution. In particular, we have investigated the effect of both expulsive and confining traps on soliton interaction. Even though we find that the amplitude of the bright soliton relies upon the time-dependent scattering length and the external time-dependent trap with the velocity being dictated by the external trap alone, the observation of interdependence of the scattering length on the trap shows that the bright solitons not only can be compressed into a desirable width and amplitude but also can be remote controlled and driven anywhere in the plane by suitably maneuvering the external time-dependent trap alone.

Matter-wave solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates with time-dependent complex potentials

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi

To analytically investigate the matter-wave solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in time-dependent complex potential, we consider a cubic-quintic Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation with distributed coefficients and a dissipative term. By introducing a suitable ansatz, we establish the criterion of the modulational instability (MI) of the system and present an explicit expression for the growth rate of a purely growing MI. Effects of the parabolic background potential, as well as of the linear potential, the gain/loss parameter, and the two- and three-body interatomic interactions on the MI are investigated. We show how the feeding/loss parameter can be well used to control the instability of the system. The analytical resolution of the considered GP equation leads to exact bright, dark and kink solitary wave solutions which are used to investigate analytically the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in BECs under consideration. These analytical investigations show that the amplitude and the motion of bright, dark and kink solitary waves depend on the strengths of the two- and three-body interatomic interactions, as well as on the strengths of the external trapping potential and the parameter of the gain/loss of atoms in the condensate.

Phase Engineering and Solitons of Bose–Einstein Condensates with Two- and Three-Body Interactions

Vaduganathan Ramesh Kumar, Ramaswamy Radha, Miki Wadati

We introduce a phase imprint into the macroscopic order parameter governing the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates with attractive two-body interactions described by a cubic Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation and then engineer the imprinted phase suitably to generate the modified GP equation. The modified GP equation describes the dynamics of condensates with both two- (attractive) and three-body (attractive and repulsive) interactions in an expulsive harmonic trap. Employing gauge transformation approach, we then construct bright solitons of the modified GP equation. We observe that the attractive three-body interactions introduce an additional nontrivial phase in the matter wave solitons arising due to attractive two-body interactions without changing their density while the repulsive three-body interactions enormously increase the density of the condensates without causing any change in the phase of the solitons originating from attractive two-body interactions.

Matter wave switching in Bose–Einstein condensates via intensity redistribution soliton interactions

S. Rajendran, M. Lakshmanan, Paulsamy Muruganandam

Using time dependent nonlinear (s-wave scattering length) coupling between the components of a weakly interacting two component Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), we show the possibility of matter wave switching (fraction of atoms transfer) between the components via shape changing/intensity redistribution (matter redistribution) soliton interactions. We investigate the exact bright–bright N-soliton solution of an effective one-dimensional (1D) two component BEC by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length, and atom gain or loss. In particular, we show that the effective 1D coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations with time dependent parameters can be transformed into the well known completely integrable Manakov model described by coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave functions under certain conditions related to the time dependent parameters. We obtain the one-soliton solution and demonstrate the shape changing/matter redistribution interactions of two and three-soliton solutions for the time-independent expulsive harmonic trap potential, periodically modulated harmonic trap potential, and kinklike modulated harmonic trap potential. The standard elastic collision of solitons occur only for a specific choice of soliton parameters.

Management of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent atomic scattering length in a time-dependent parabolic complex potential

Emmanuel Kengne, Weiqiang Liu

In this paper, we consider a Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a time-dependent nonlinearity and a spatiotemporal complex linear term which describes the dynamics of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent interatomic interactions in a parabolic potential in the presence of feeding or loss of atoms. We establish the integrability conditions under which analytical solutions describing the modulational instability and the propagation of both bright and dark solitary waves on a continuous wave background are obtained. The obtained integrability conditions also appear as the conditions under which the solitary waves of the BECs can be managed by controlling the functional gain or loss parameter. For specific BECs, the dynamics of bright and dark solitons are investigated analytically through the found exact solutions of the GP equation. Our results show that under the integrability conditions, the gain or loss parameter of the GP equation can be used to manage the motion of both bright and dark solitons. We show that for BECs with loss (gain) of atoms, the bright and dark solitons during their propagation have a compression (broadening) in their width. Furthermore, under a safe range of parameters and under the integrability conditions, it is possible to squeeze a bright soliton of BECs with loss of atoms into the assumed peak matter density, which can provide an experimental tool for investigating the range of validity of the 1D GP equation. Our results also reveal that under the conditions of the solitary wave management, neither the injection or the ejection of atoms from the condensate affects the soliton peak during its propagation.

Impact of Three-Body Interactions and Nonlinear Dispersion on the Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates with Time-Dependent Scattering Length in a Harmonic Potential

Emmanuel Kengne, Ahmed Lakhssassi

A one-dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation which governs the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent scattering length in a harmonic potential is considered. Through a modified phase imprint transformation into the macroscopic order parameter, we suitably generate a derivative cubic-quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (DCQ-GP) equation that describes the dynamics of condensates in the harmonic potential for both twoand three-body interatomic interactions in the presence of nonlinear dispersion. Employing a modified lens-type transformation, we reduce the DCQ-GP equation into a derivative cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau (DCQ-GL) equation that allows us to investigate the modulational instability (MI) of the system and study, through the analytical exact solutions of the considered 1D GP equation, the effects of the three-body interactions and nonlinear dispersion on the dynamics of the BECs. We observe that for BECs with repulsive two-body interatomic interactions, the attractive three-body interactions and the nonlinear dispersion have opposite effects on the condensate: (i) The attractive three-body interactions enhance the instability, while the nonlinear dispersion softens the instability of the system; (ii) the attractive three-body interactions contributes to the ejections of atoms from the condensates while the nonlinear dispersion contributes to the accumulation of atoms in the condensates; (iii) the attractive three-body interactions contributes to the broadening of the matter wave solitons, while the nonlinear dispersion contributes to the compression of the matter wave solitons.
