Extension of the Watanabe–Sagawa–Ueda Uncertainty Relations for Measurement Errors to Infinite-Dimensional Systems

Ryosuke Nogami

Abstract We extend the Watanabe–Sagawa–Ueda (WSU) uncertainty relations for measurement errors to infinite-dimensional systems. The original WSU formulation provided a definition of measurement errors with a clear physical interpretation based on quantum estimation theory, but was restricted to finite-dimensional systems, excluding important observables such as position and momentum. Using pseudo-inverse forms of positive-semidefinite forms, we develop a framework for classical and quantum estimation theory for models whose parameter space is the set of full-rank states on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, and derive classical and quantum Cramér–Rao inequalities. We extend the WSU measurement errors to both bounded and unbounded operators, and derive corresponding error–error uncertainty relations. The resulting uncertainty relation inequalities are stronger than the original WSU bound due to an improved derivation method. Our results provide a theoretical framework for applying estimation-based uncertainty relations to observables with continuous values in infinite-dimensional systems.

Semiclassical position and momentum information entropy for sech2 and a family of rational potentials

Mark W. Coffey

The classical and semiclassical position and momentum information entropies for the reflectionless sech2 potential and a family of rational potentials are obtained explicitly. The sum of these entropies is of interest for the entropic uncertainty principle that is stronger than the Heisenberg uncertainty relation. The analytic results relate the classical period of the motion, total energy, position and momentum entropy, and dependence upon the principal quantum number n. The logarithmic energy dependence of the entropies is presented. The potentials considered include as special cases the attractive delta function and square well. Uncertainty principle for angular position and angular momentum

Sonja Franke‐Arnold, Stephen Mark Barnett, Eric Yao +3 more

The uncertainty principle places fundamental limits on the accuracy with which we are able to measure the values of different physical quantities (Heisenberg 1949 The Physical Principles of the Quantum Theory (New York: Dover); Robertson 1929 Phys. Rev. 34 127). This has profound effects not only on the microscopic but also on the macroscopic level of physical systems. The most familiar form of the uncertainty principle relates the uncertainties in position and linear momentum. Other manifestations include those relating uncertainty in energy to uncertainty in time duration, phase of an electromagnetic field to photon number and angular position to angular momentum (Vaccaro and Pegg 1990 J. Mod. Opt. 37 17; Barnett and Pegg 1990 Phys. Rev. A 41 3427). In this paper, we report the first observation of the last of these uncertainty relations and derive the associated states that satisfy the equality in the uncertainty relation. We confirm the form of these states by detailed measurement of the angular momentum of a light beam after passage through an appropriate angular aperture. The angular uncertainty principle applies to all physical systems and is particularly important for systems with cylindrical symmetry.
