Dressed-atom spectroscopy of cold Cs atoms

Abstract

Absorption spectra of cold Cs atoms in a magneto-optical trap under the influence of a strong external pump laser field with arbitrary detuning and intensity have been systematically investigated. The spectra featured the Rabi sidebands of each transition, and their behavior was nicely fitted by the dressed-atom theory. A pronounced dispersion-type profile with sub-natural linewidth at the pump frequency may be attributable to the stimulated Raman process by sublevels that are lightshifted and optically pumped by the pump laser.

Pump-probe spectroscopy of cold rubidium atoms in an integrating sphere

Wenli Wang, Richang Dong, Jianliao Deng +1 more

Absorption spectra of cold rubidium atoms in an integrating sphere under the influence of a diffuse laser field have been systematically investigated. A pronounced dispersionlike structure centered at the light-shifted pump frequency is observed with a subnatural linewidth. In particular, two clearly resolved absorption resonances on the $5{S}_{1/2}(F=2)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{P}_{3/2}({F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=3)$ transitions occur with variable probe beam intensity, which is consistent with our proposed theoretical model. Based on the two absorption resonances,we measure the dependence of light shifts, from which we can directly extract the effective Rabi frequency in a diffuse laser field, on the probe laser intensity, pump laser intensity, and pump laser detuning. Our work helps to identify the physical mechanisms behind these spectral features and is beneficial for studying the corresponding effect in a cold sample.

Raman Spectroscopy of Cesium Atoms in a Laser Trap

D Grison, Brahim Lounis, Ch Salomon +2 more

Cold cesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap are probed by an additional weak laser beam. Resonances having a subnatural linewidth are observed on the probe beam absorption when the probe frequency is scanned about the trapping beam frequency. These resonances are interpreted in terms of stimulated Raman processes. They provide information on the internal as well as external states of the atoms in the trap.

Autler—Townes doublet in the absorption spectra for the transition between excited states of cold cesium atoms

Qiangbing Liang, Baodong Yang, Jianfeng Yang +2 more

Autler—Townes splitting in absorption spectra of the excited states 6 2 P 3/2 –8 2 S 1/2 of cold cesium atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap has been observed. Experimental data of the Autler—Townes splitting fit well to the dressed-atom theory, by which the fact of the cold atoms dressed by cooling/trapping laser beams is revealed. The results of the theoretical fitting with experiment not only told us the effective Rabi frequency cold atoms experienced, but also could be used for measuring the probability amplitudes of the dressed states.

Observation of the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Dispersion-like Structure in Trapped Cs Atoms

Kyoung-Dae Kim, Mi-Rang Kwon, Jung Bog Kim +1 more

We report experiemtnal results demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in trapped Cs atoms. EIT occurs at the Λ-type configuration where the re0-pumping laser simultaneously plays a role as the coupling laser in the presence of a magneto-optical trapping and weak magnetic fields. Dependences of EIT signal on both the intensity and the detuning of the coupling laser were investigated. Linear absorption spectra for cold cesium atoms in the magneto-optical trap have been observed and shown the pronounced dispersion-like structure with sub-natural linewidth of 1 MHz due to the cooling laser.

Observation of sub-natural linewidths for cold Rb atoms in a magneto-optic trap

Umakant D. Rapol, Ajay Wasan, Vasant Natarajan A

We have studied the absorption of a weak probe beam through cold rubidium atoms in a magneto-optic trap. The absorption spectrum shows two peaks, with the smaller peak having linewidth as small as 28% of the natural linewidth. The modification happens because the laser beams used for trapping also drive the atoms coherently between the ground and excited states. This creates "dressed" states whose energies are shifted depending on the strength of the drive. Linewidth narrowing occurs due to quantum coherence between the dressed states. The separation of the states and the linewidth depends on the trapping-laser intensity and detuning as predicted by this model.
