Abstract

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effects in silver, gold, and aluminum metamaterials consisting of dipole resonators and quadrupole resonators were demonstrated at visible wavelengths. Optical characteristics of the metamaterials could be controlled by the gap distance between the two resonators. EIT-like effects were observed at wavelengths between 603 and 789 nm, 654 and 834 nm, and 462 and 693 nm for the silver, gold, and aluminum EIT metamaterials, respectively. At wavelengths longer than around 650 nm, the silver metamaterials had better EIT-like features. At wavelengths shorter than around 650 nm, on the other hand, the aluminum metamaterials showed promising EIT-like results.

Comparison of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Performance in Metallic and All-Dielectric Metamaterials

Jie Hu, Tingting Lang, Zhi Hong +2 more

Analogs of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in metamaterial have undoubtedly become a research hotspot in recent years. In this paper, we summarized some of the literature on EIT published to date and compared their performance. Then, we designed two kinds of metamaterials using aluminum and silicon. Both have the similar glasses-shaped structure of a periodic lattice with one bar resonator and two split ring resonators. We analyzed and compared the EIT performance in the near infrared waveband of these two metamaterials. The metallic EIT metamaterials with large radiation loss and ohmic heat loss have a smaller Q-factor than the dielectric counterpart with less energy loss, while having a higher sensitivity toward the ambient refractive index. The Q-factor of our designed aluminum metamaterial and silicon metamaterial are 10.06 and 412.6, respectively. Their sensitivities are 1642.97 nm/RIU and 433.05 nm/RIU, respectively, which are higher than most of their counterparts in the same waveband in the other literature. For the application of slow light, the dielectric metamaterials with higher Q-factor are far superior to the metallic metamaterials in the same waveband and comparable propagation distance. The group index of the aluminum metamaterial is 42.9, and the group delay is 0.01 ps in the near infrared waveband. For the silicon metamaterial, the group index is approximately 1907.1, and the group delay is 0.89 ps within the transmission window in the near infrared waveband; these values are both higher than most counterparts in the same waveband in other literature. The EIT metamaterials that we designed have excellent performance, and to the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first detailed comparison of EIT metamaterials made of dielectric and metal with similar structure; this paper may have certain instructive meaning for further research on metamaterial analogues of EIT in the future.

A planar metamaterial design for electromagnetically induced transparency

ُ S Ahmadi, Ali Rezaei-Latifi

Electromagnetically induced transparency is an optical phenomenon that is characterized by the elimination of the effect of a medium on a propagating beam of electromagnetic radiation in a specific frequency band. In this study, EIT was investigated at a proposed metamaterial with the dimensions milimeter and in the area of frequency of GHz. The computation results indicated that EIT with high transmission rate and high Q factor occurs in certain frequencies by breaking the symmetry in this structure. The sensitivity studies showed that the use of silver in the structure increases the quality factor so significantly that this quantity reaches 338 for gold and copper, while it reaches 677 for silver. In addition, By reducing the temperature, the transmission rate in the structure increases and reaches acceptable degree 98%. This structure can be an appropriate option for slow light usages, and it can be utilized for light amplification in microwave structures.

Ultra-narrow electromagnetically induced transparency in the visible and near-infrared regions

Qiao Wang, Liyun Ma, Wenli Cui +2 more

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon is of great importance for plenty of applications, such as slow light, nonlinear effect, nanosensing, and metamaterials. The linewidth is a key factor to evaluate the characteristic of EIT, because the drastic change in dispersion in the narrow spectra can make good control of light. However, only a few reports are related to the ultranarrow EIT. In this paper, we propose a nanosystem based on a gold grating and a multilayer structure. An ultranarrow spectral EIT peak with a linewidth range of 0.75–1.5 nm is observed in such a nanosystem in the visible and near-infrared regions. The physical mechanism leading to the phenomenon is different from those in previous works. In the proposed nanosystem, the ultranarrow EIT peak is formed by the destructive interference of the Fabry-Perot resonance and waveguide modes. Analytic results calculated from the model equations are also found to be consistent with numerical simulations for both normal and oblique incidences. Our work provides another efficient way to realize an ultranarrow EIT.

From electromagnetically induced transparency to absorption in planar optical metamaterials

Bo Na, Jinhui Shi, Chunying Guan +1 more

We theoretically investigate the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a planar metamaterial at optical frequency, which originates from destructive and constructive interference between dark and radiative elements. The metamaterial consists of two coupled resonators with different geometries. An EIT-like transparent window with low absorption is observed and found to be strongly affected by resonant states of the resonators. The transition between the EIT and EIA is achieved by changing the split width and coupling distance. The absorption is enhanced up to 2.5 times compared with the dipolar case. The excitation of the dark mode is very important for EIT-and EIA-like responses of the proposed metamaterial. The EIT and EIA phenomena offer a potential method for manipulating electromagnetic response in metamaterial-based devices.

A metamaterial modulator based on electrically controllable electromagnetically induced transparency

Yuancheng Fan, Tong Qiao, Fuli Zhang +3 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a promising technology for the enhancement of light-matter interactions, and recent demonstrations of the quantum EIT realized in artificial micro-structured medium have remarkably reduced the extreme requirement for experimental observation of EIT spectrum. In this paper, we propose to electrically control the EIT spectrum in a metamaterial for an electromagnetic modulator. A diode acting as a tunable resistor is loaded in the gap of two paired wires to inductively tune the magnetic resonance, which induces remarkable modulation on the EIT spectrum through the metamaterial sample. The experimental measurements confirmed that the prediction of electromagnetic modulation in three narrow bands on the EIT spectrum, and a modulation contrast of up to 31 dB was achieved on the transmission through the metamaterial. Our results may facilitate the study on active/dynamical technology in translational metamaterials, which connect extraordinary manipulations on the flow of light in metamaterials, e.g., the exotic EIT, and practical applications in industry.

Electromagnetically induced transparency controlled by auxiliary wave via three-wave mixing

Toshihiro Nakanishi, Masao Kitano

We introduce a metamaterial for realizing true electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in analogy to atomic EIT effect. In the metamaterial, two resonant modes oscillating at different resonant frequencies are coupled through three-wave mixing in the presence of an auxiliary wave, and sharp transparency attributed to EIT effect is induced. We experimentally demonstrate the EIT effect using the metamaterial loaded with nonlinear capacitors in microwave region.
