The conditions on the one-matrix for three-body fermion wavefunctions with one-rank equal to six

Abstract

The necessary and sufficient conditions for a one-body reduced density matrix of rank 6 to be derivable from a three-body fermion wavefunction are presented. For this case it can be shown explicitly that the information content of the one-matrix is less than that of the wavefunction. The extension of these conditions to the cases of a three-body function of one-rank 7 and a four-body function of one-rank 8 are also discussed. The authors have obtained sufficient conditions for these two cases. Numerical studies reported in this paper lead us to believe that these conditions are the necessary and sufficient conditions.

Pure- N -representability conditions of two-fermion reduced density matrices

David A. Mazziotti

We derive necessary conditions for any two-fermion reduced density matrix (2-RDM) to be representable by a pure $N$-fermion density matrix $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}}^{*}$ where $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Psi}}$ is the wave function. These pure $N$-representability conditions of the 2-RDM are important because they provide stringent constraints beyond those from the Pauli and the generalized Pauli constraints on the structure of many-fermion 2-RDMs and their wave functions. The pure 2-RDM conditions are derived as generalized Pauli constraints on effective one-fermion reduced density matrices (1-RDMs) generated by the removal or addition of a fermion from the wave function. Computationally, we show for four-electron molecules that the derived pure $N$-representability conditions are nontrivially active for exact ground-state 2-RDMs and that they provide significant restrictions beyond the D, Q, and G ensemble $N$-representability conditions. Constraints on higher-order $p$-RDMs where $p>2$ are derived in a similar fashion. The constraints have potentially significant applications to computing strongly correlated many-fermion states with enhanced accuracy and decreased computational complexity.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the N-representability of functionals of the one-electron reduced density matrix

Jannis Erhard, Paul W. Ayers

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the N-representability of the universal one-electron reduced density matrix functional. Functionals satisfying these conditions are guaranteed to yield variational upper bounds on the true energy in one-electron reduced density matrix functional theory, regardless of the strength of the interparticle repulsion. Conversely, any functional violating these conditions will necessarily underestimate the true energy for certain systems. These exact constraints impose a stringent restriction on density matrix functional approximations, as many existing functionals-including the Hartree-Fock functional-appear to violate them. This mathematical formalism, therefore, can guide the development of new approximate functionals and numerical algorithms.

Conditions for Describing Triplet States in Reduced Density Matrix Functional Theory

Iris Theophilou, Nektarios N. Lathiotakis, N. Helbig

We consider necessary conditions for the one-body reduced density matrix (1RDM) to correspond to a triplet wave function of a two-electron system. The conditions concern the occupation numbers and are different for the high spin projections, Sz = ±1, and the Sz = 0 projection. Hence, they can be used to test if an approximate 1RDM functional yields the same energies for both projections. We employ these conditions in reduced density matrix functional theory calculations for the triplet excitations of two-electron systems. In addition, we propose that these conditions can be used in the calculation of triplet states of systems with more than two electrons by restricting the active space. We assess this procedure in calculations for a few atomic and molecular systems. We show that the quality of the optimal 1RDMs improves by applying the conditions in all the cases we studied.

Properties and $N$-representability conditions of the two-body density matrix

Nicholas J. Cox

A summary is presented of the properties of the coefficient matrices formed by expanding the two-body reduced density matrix in a complete set of two-electron wave functions. Calculating the relationship between the many electron wave function and these so-called two-body density matrices enables the derivation of necessary $N$-representability conditions that ensure a given matrix obeys the postulates of many-body quantum mechanics.

Reduction of the N -Particle Variational Problem

Claude Garrod, Jerome K. Percus

A variational method is presented which is applicable to N-particle boson or fermion systems with two-body interactions. For these systems the energy may be expressed in terms of the two-particle density matrix: Γ(1, 2 | 1′, 2′)=(Ψ |a2+a1+a1′a2′| Ψ). In order to have the variational equation: δE/δΓ = 0 yield the correct ground-state density matrix one must restrict Γ to the set of density matrices which are actually derivable from N-particle boson (or fermion) systems. Subsidiary conditions are presented which are necessary and sufficient to insure that Γ is so derivable. These conditions are of a form which render them unsuited for practical application. However the following necessary (but not sufficient) conditions are shown by some applications to yield good results: It is proven that if Γ(1, 2 | 1′, 2′) and γ(1 | 1′) are the two-particle and one-particle density matrices of an N-particle system [normalized by tr Γ = N(N − 1) and trγ = N] then the associated operator: G(1,2 | 1′,2′)=δ(1−1′)γ(2 | 2′)+σ Γ(1′,2 | 1,2′)−γ(2 | 1)γ(1′ | 2′) is a nonnegative operator. [Here σ is + 1 or − 1 for bosons or fermions respectively.]

Multiparticle entanglement and ranks of density matrices

Joachim Stolze, Bo Chong, Hellmut Keiter

Based on the ranks of reduced density matrices, we derive necessary conditions for the separability of multiparticle arbitrary-dimensional mixed states, which are equivalent to sufficient conditions for entanglement. In a similar way we obtain necessary conditions for the separability of a given mixed state with respect to partitions of all particles of the system into subsets. The special case of pure states is discussed separately.
