Abstract

An ultrafast transient population grating induced by a $(1+1)$-dimensional, ultrashort dipole soliton is demonstrated by solving the full-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. The number of lines and the period of the grating can be controlled by the beam waist and the area of the pulse. Of interest is that a polarization grating is produced. A coherent control scheme based on these phenomena can be contemplated as ultrafast transient grating techniques.

Ultrafast transient ring-shaped population grating

Keyu Xia, Yueping Niu, Ni Cui +1 more

We demonstrate an ultrafast transient, ring-shaped population grating induced by an ultrashort hollow Gaussian laser bullet by solving the three-dimensional full-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. Through adjusting the beam waist and the area of the pulse, we can control the number of lines and the period of the grating. Based on this coherent control scheme, a door to produce gratings with complex transverse structure is opened.

Coherent Control of Extreme Nonlinear Optical Properties of Quantum System via Ultrashort Laser Pulses

Shangqing Gong, Keyu Xia, Yueping Niu +2 more

We investigate the extreme nonlinear optical properties of quantum system driven by ultrashort laser pulses by solving the one and two dimensional, full‐wave Maxwell‐Bloch coupled equations. We find that the near‐dipole‐dipole (NDD) interactions have a crucial influence on the absolute phase of few‐cycle laser pulses. The difference of the absolute phase between the cases with and without NDD effects can go up to π. Moreover, a novel ultrafast transient population grating induced by a two‐dimensional, ultrashort dipole soliton is demonstrated. The number of lines and the period of the grating can be controlled by the beam waist and the area of the pulse.

Population density gratings induced by few-cycle optical pulses in a resonant medium

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, A. V. Pakhomov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov +4 more

Creation, erasing and ultrafast control of population density gratings using few-cycle optical pulses coherently interacting with resonant medium is discussed. In contrast to the commonly used schemes, here the pulses do not need to overlap in the medium, interaction between the pulses is mediated by excitation of polarization waves. We investigate the details of the dynamics arising in such ultrashort pulse scheme and develop an analytical theory demonstrating the importance of the phase memory effects in the dynamics.

Generation and control of population difference gratings in a three-level hydrogen atomic medium using half-cycle attosecond pulses nonoverlapping in the medium

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, A. V. Pakhomov +2 more

Recently, the possibility of the generation and interaction of unipolar half-cycle electromagnetic pulses with quantum systems has been the subject of active research. Such pulses can find many different and interesting applications. They are able to excite quantum systems very fast. Based on the numerical solution of Maxwell-Bloch equations, this paper studies theoretically the possibility of guiding and ultrafast controlling population difference gratings by a sequence of half-cycle attosecond pulses in a three-level resonant medium. The parameters of the model medium (transition frequencies and transition dipole moments) match those in a hydrogen atom. We show the possibility of guiding periodic gratings and dynamic microcavities on different resonant transitions in the medium. We also consider the superradiance of polarization waves and atomic gratings produced by half-cycle pulses.

Ultrafast creation and control of population density gratings via ultraslow polarization waves

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, Ihar Babushkin +3 more

In the regime of resonant coherent light-matter interaction, light pulses may interact with each other indirectly via a polarization wave created by the other pulse. We show that such interaction allows fast creation and erasing of high-contrast dynamic population density gratings, as well as control of their period in a few-cycle regime. Our scheme uses counter-propagating optical pulses, which do not cross each other in the medium. The mechanism is able to work with pulse durations up to the single-cycle limit. Somewhat surprisingly, ultrafast grating wave vector control requires the generation of polarization waves with the phase velocity much smaller than that of light.

Coherent control and creation of population gratings for a pair of attosecond pulses in a resonant medium based on one-dimensional rectangular quantum wells

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, P. Belov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov +2 more

Attosecond pulses can be used to create and control coherence in resonant media, since their duration is shorter than the population relaxation times T1 and medium polarization T2. Previously, the possibility of creating and ultrafast control of electromagnetically induced gratings (EMIG) of atomic populations in a resonant medium was shown using a sequence of extremely short light pulses, when the pulses coherently interact with the medium and do not simultaneously overlap in the medium. These studies were carried out in various approximations, when a finite number of energy levels of the medium is taken into account, or when the pulse amplitude is small. In this paper, based on a direct numerical solution of the time dependent Schredinger equation without the indicated approximations, we study the possibility of ultrafast coherent control of populations and the creation of an EMIG by a pair of attosecond pulses in a multilevel resonant medium with a low density of particles. The medium is modeled using a one-dimensional rectangular potential well with infinitely high walls. The studies performed show the possibility of ultrafast coherent control of the properties of resonant media based on quantum wells using attosecond pulses. Keywords: electromagnetically induced gratings, coherent interaction, extremely short pulses, unipolar pulses, attosecond pulses, medium coherence.
