Ground-state energy of the adsorbed Bose liquid

Abstract

The ground state of the quasi-two-dimensional Bose liquid in a periodic one-body potential is examined. The energy shift and density variation due to the periodic potential are calculated with a procedure which combines the paired-phonon analysis and canonical transformations. The results of this calculation are compared to the recent calculation of these effects which employed a correlated wave function and a cumulant expansion. The results are the same to lowest order. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are explored.

The ground-state energy of the quasi-one-dimensional charged Bose condensate

L. Calmels, Alfred Gold

In a recent paper we studied the ground-state energy of a quasi-one dimensional charged Bose condensate confined by a two-dimensional oscillator potential [l]. Many-body effects beyond the RPA have been taken into account by the local-field correction. In the present paper we study a quasi-one dimensional charged Bose condensate with a cylindrical confinement model (hard walls) and compare with the results of an electron gas. The following quantities are calculated : interaction energy, pair-correlation function, local-field correction, dielectric function, collective modes.

Ground-State Energy of a Weakly Interacting Bose Gas: Calculation Without Regularization

Christoph Weiß, Martin Block, Dave Boers +2 more

The textbook calculation of the ground-state energy of a dilute gas of Bose particles is examined in detail, and certain mathematical inconsistencies are pointed out. On the basis of this analysis, a refined approach suitable for soft interaction potentials which lend themselves to a low-order Born approximation is developed. This procedure emphasizes the low-density character of the resulting formula for the ground-state energy, and avoids all divergent expressions at intermediate stages of the computation. It is stressed that the standard Bogoliubov approximation, if not augmented by some additional device, leads to an error which manifests itself already in the lowest order of the density. - PACS 03.75.Hh, 05.30.Jp, 03.65.Nk.

Method of correlated basis functions for the ground state of a one-dimensional many-particle boson system

Deok Kyo Lee, Lin-ing Kung

The method of correlated basis functions is used in the study of the ground-state properties of a one-dimensional system of bosons interacting through a repulsive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function potential. Ground-state energies are determined numerically for intermediate values of the coupling constant in three steps: (1) a trial form of the radial distribution function generated by the Bijl-Dingle-Jastrow (BDJ) type of wave function is introduced to obtain approximate ground-state energies, (2) the paired-phonon analysis is applied to improve the BDJ description of the ground state, and (3) leading corrections to the improved approximate energies are evaluted from the second-order perturbation energy generated by the three-phonon vertex. The obtained energy values are found to agree closely with the exact results calculated by Lieb and Liniger.

Ground-state energy of charged quantum fluids in two dimensions

Hock-Kee Sim, R. Tao, Fa Yueh Wu

The ground state of a two-dimensional charged quantum system is studied using the method of correlated-basis functions. For particles obeying the Bose-Einstein statistics we compute the ground-state energy variationally for all particle densities using the Bijl-Dingle-Jastrow trial wave function. The Bose ground-state energy and wave function so determined are used next to study the Fermi system. We compute the Fermi ground-state energy using a cluster expansion approach, which is again valid for all particle densities, and find that the ground state is paramagnetic. While these calculations provide variational upper bounds to the ground-state energies, we also establish independent lower bounds to the ground-state energies.

Many-body properties of a one-dimensional Bose liquid

Chung‐In Um, Woo-Hyung Kahng, Eue-Soon Yim +3 more

The elementary excitations of one-dimensional Bose liquids interacting via a soft potential with a Lennard-Jones-type attractive tail are evaluated in the ring-diagram approximation. Starting with this potential, we have evaluated the structure factor, thermodynamic functions, pair-distribution function, ground-state energy, and sound velocity explicitly. The energy spectrum and structure factor resemble the bulk cases, but the minimum energy is much lower and the first peak of the structure factor is higher. The pair-distribution function decreases as ${r}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ at large distances, which is characteristic of phonons in one dimension. The ground-state energy is expressed analytically in powers of a dimensionless parameter. The expression agrees with the one obtained from a $\ensuremath{\delta}$- function-type potential.

Quasi-two-dimensional imperfect Bose gas adsorbed on a surface

E. Cheng, Milton W. Cole

We study a submonolayer film adsorbed on a substrate surface as a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) imperfect Bose gas. The ground-state energy and the depletion fraction at zero temperature are calculated. It is found that the depletion is independent of the 2D density (in contrast to the 3D case), but is a monotonically increasing function of the substrate potential well depth. Qualitative conclusions are drawn about implications for superfluidity in the case of He on a weak-binding substrate.
