Phase-space representation for Galilean quantum particles of arbitrary spin

Abstract

The phase-space approach to quantisation is extended to incorporate spinning particles with Galilean symmetry. The appropriate phase space is the coadjoint orbit r 6 *S 2 . From two basic principles, traciality and Galilean covariance, the Weyl symbol calculus is constructed. Then the Galilean-equivariant twisted products of functions on this phase space are identified.

Relativistic quantum kinematics in the Moyal representation

José F. Cariñena, JoséM. Garcia-Bondia, Joseph C. Várilly

The authors obtain the phase-space quantisation for relativistic spinning particles. The main tool is what they call a 'Stratonovich-Weyl quantiser' which relates functions on phase space to operators on a suitable Hilbert space, and has the essential properties of covariance (under a group representation) and traciality. Their phase spaces are coadjoint orbits of the restricted Poincare group; they compute and explicitly coordinatise the orbits corresponding to massive particles, with or without spin. Some orbits correspond to unitary irreducible representations of the Poincare group; they show that there is a unique Stratonovich-Weyl quantiser from each of these phase spaces to operators on the corresponding representation spaces, and compute it explicitly.

Symplectic Field Theory of the Galilean Covariant Scalar and Spinor Representations

G. X. A. Petronilo, S. C. Ulhoa, A. E. Santana

We explore the concept of the extended Galilei group, a representation for the symplectic quantum mechanics in the manifold G, written in the light-cone of a five-dimensional de Sitter space-time in the phase space. The Hilbert space is constructed endowed with a symplectic structure. We study the unitary operators describing rotations and translations, whose generators satisfy the Lie algebra of G. This representation gives rise to the Schr¨odinger (Klein–Gordon-like) equation for the wave function in the phase space such that the dependent variables have the position and linear momentum contents. The wave functions are associated to the Wigner function through the Moyal product such that the wave functions represent a quasiamplitude of probability. We construct the Pauli–Schr¨odinger (Dirac-like) equation in the phase space in its explicitly covariant form. Finally, we show the equivalence between the five-dimensional formalism of the phase space with the usual formalism, proposing a solution that recovers the non-covariant form of the Pauli–Schr¨odinger equation in the phase space.

Symplectically covariant Schrödinger equation in phase space

Maurice A. de Gosson

A classical theorem of Stone and von Neumann says that the Schrödinger representation is, up to unitary equivalences, the only irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions on configuration space. Using the Wigner-Moyal transform we construct an irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on a certain Hilbert space of square-integrable functions defined on phase space. This allows us to extend the usual Weyl calculus into a phase-space calculus and leads us to a quantum mechanics in phase space, equivalent to standard quantum mechanics. We also briefly discuss the extension of metaplectic operators to phase space and the probabilistic interpretation of the solutions of the phase space Schrödinger equation

Phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics and quantum-state reconstruction for physical systems with Lie-group symmetries

Constantin Brif, A. Mann

We present a detailed discussion of a general theory of phase-space distributions, introduced recently by the authors [J. Phys. A 31, L9 (1998)]. This theory provides a unified phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics for physical systems possessing Lie-group symmetries. The concept of generalized coherent states and the method of harmonic analysis are used to construct explicitly a family of phase-space functions which are postulated to satisfy the Stratonovich-Weyl correspondence with a generalized tracing condition. The symbol calculus for the phase-space functions is given by means of the generalized twisted product. The phase-space formalism is used to study the problem of the reconstruction of quantum states. In particular, we consider the reconstruction method based on measurements of displaced projectors, which comprises a number of recently proposed quantum-optical schemes and is also related to the standard methods of signal processing. A general group-theoretic description of this method is developed using the technique of harmonic expansions on the phase space.

Galilean quantum kinematics

Jorge Krause

The Galilean symmetry of a free particle in one-dimensional space is examined under the scope of non-Abelian quantum kinematics. Within the Hilbert space that carries the regular ray representation of the Galilei group the Schrödinger operator appears as one of the three fundamental invariants of the extended kinematic algebra. By means of a superselection rule the physical Hilbert subspaces of the system are identified, in which a complementary ray representation of the Galilean transformation produces the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and the Feynman space-time propagator. The quantization approach used in this paper is purely group theoretic and relativistic.

Covariant Quantum Fields via Lorentz Group Representation of Weyl Operators

Radhakrishnan Balu

The building blocks of Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus start with Weyl operators on a symmetric Fock space. To realize a relativistically covariant version of the calculus we construct representations of Poincare group in terms of Weyl operators on suitably constructed, Bosonic or Fermionic based on the mass and spin of the fundamental particle, Fock spaces. We proceed by describing the orbits of homogeneous Lorentz group on R4 and build fiber bundle representations of Poincaré group induced from the stabilizer subgroups (little groups) and build the Boson Fock space of the Hilbert space formed from the sections of the bundle. Our Weyl operators are constructed on symmetric Fock space of this space and the corresponding annihilation, creation, and conservation operators are synthesized in the usual fashion in relativistic theories for space-like, time-like, and light-like fields. We achieve this by constructing transitive systems of imprimitivity (second-quantized SI), which are dynamical systems with trajectories dense in the configuration space, by induced representations. We provide the details of the field operators for the case of massive Bosons as the rest are similar in construction and indicate the ways to construct adapted processes paving way for building covariant quantum stochastic calculus.
