Symplectically covariant Schrödinger equation in phase space

Abstract

A classical theorem of Stone and von Neumann says that the Schrödinger representation is, up to unitary equivalences, the only irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on the Hilbert space of square-integrable functions on configuration space. Using the Wigner-Moyal transform we construct an irreducible representation of the Heisenberg group on a certain Hilbert space of square-integrable functions defined on phase space. This allows us to extend the usual Weyl calculus into a phase-space calculus and leads us to a quantum mechanics in phase space, equivalent to standard quantum mechanics. We also briefly discuss the extension of metaplectic operators to phase space and the probabilistic interpretation of the solutions of the phase space Schrödinger equation

Quantum mechanics in phase space: the Schrodinger and the Moyal representations

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, Franz Luef

We present a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics in the Schrödinger representation and derive the associated Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. We prove that the resulting theory is unitarily equivalent to the standard "configuration space" formulation and show that it allows for a uniform treatment of both pure and mixed quantum states. In the second part of the paper we determine the unitary transformation (and its infinitesimal generator) that maps the phase space Schrödinger representation into another (called Moyal) representation, where the wave function is the cross-Wigner function familiar from deformation quantization. Some features of this representation are studied, namely the associated pseudo-differential calculus and the main spectral and dynamical results. Finally, the relation with deformation quantization is discussed.

A Phase Space Representation of the Metaplectic Group

Maurice de Gosson

The symplectic group Sp(n) acts on phase space while the unitary representation of its double cover, Mp(n), the metaplectic group, acts on functions defined on configuration space. We will construct an extension Mp(n) of Mp(n) acting on square integrable functions on phase space. This is performed using previous results of ours involving explicit expressions of the twisted Weyl symbols of metaplectic operators and Bopp pseudodifferential operators, which are phase space extensions of the usual Weyl operators.

A generalized Wigner function on the space of irreducible representations of the Weyl–Heisenberg group and its transformation properties

Alberto Ibort, Vladimir I. Man’ko, Giuseppe Marmo +2 more

A natural extension of the Wigner function to the space of irreducible unitary representations of the Weyl–Heisenberg group is discussed. The action of the automorphisms group of the Weyl–Heisenberg group onto Wigner functions and their generalizations and onto symplectic tomograms is elucidated. Some examples of physical systems are considered to illustrate some aspects of the characterization of the Wigner functions as solutions of differential equations.

(Heisenberg-)Weyl Algebras, Segal-Bargmann Transform and Representations of Poincaré Groups

Miloslav Havlíček, Jan Kotrbatý, Patrick Moylan +1 more

In a recent paper [1] we described a novel treatment of the unitary irreducible representations of the Poincaré groups in 2, 3 and 4 space-time dimensions as unitary operators on the representation spaces of the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra of index r = 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Here we relate this approach to the usual method of describing the representations of these Poincaré groups, i.e. the Wigner-Mackey construction.

On quantum mechanical phase-space wave functions

Joachim J. Wl odarz

An approach to quantum mechanics based on the notion of a phase-space wave function is proposed within the Weyl–Wigner–Moyal representation. It is shown that the Schrödinger equation for the phase-space wave function is equivalent to the quantum Liouville equation for the Wigner distribution function. The relationship to the recent results by Torres-Vega and Frederick [J. Chem. Phys. 98, 3103 (1993)] is also discussed.

Quantum symmetries and the Weyl Wigner product of group representations

Anthony J. Bracken, G Cassinelli, J G Wood

In the usual formulation of quantum mechanics, groups of automorphisms of quantum states have ray representations by unitary and antiunitary operators on complex Hilbert space, in accordance with Wigner's theorem. In the phase-space formulation, they have real, true unitary representations in the space of square-integrable functions on phase space. Each such phase-space representation is a Weyl–Wigner product of the corresponding Hilbert space representation with its contragredient, and these can be recovered by 'factorizing' the Weyl–Wigner product. However, not every real, unitary representation on phase space corresponds to a group of automorphisms, so not every such representation is in the form of a Weyl–Wigner product and can be factorized. The conditions under which this is possible are examined. Examples are presented.
