Metric measures of interparticle interaction in an exactly solvable two-electron model atom

Abstract

The exact ground-state solutions for the model of two particles in a confining harmonic oscillator potential interacting through a repulsive harmonic oscillator force are used from the standpoint of geometric distances [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 050401 (2011).] between wave functions and densities. The distances from the noninteracting reference state are calculated at a specified confinement by increasing the coupling of the interparticle interaction. Based on the analytic expressions for coupling-dependent geometric measures, a discussion of the Hohenberg-Kohn mapping is given.

Dynamical generalization of a solvable family of two-electron model atoms with general interparticle repulsion

Thomas A. Niehaus, Sáandor Suhai, N. H. March

Holas, Howard and March [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 310}, 451 (2003)] have obtained analytic solutions for ground-state properties of a whole family of two-electron spin-compensated harmonically confined model atoms whose different members are characterized by a specific interparticle potential energy u($r_{12}$). Here, we make a start on the dynamic generalization of the harmonic external potential, the motivation being the serious criticism levelled recently against the foundations of time-dependent density-functional theory (e.g. [J. Schirmer and A. Dreuw, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 022513 (2007)]). In this context, we derive a simplified expression for the time-dependent electron density for arbitrary interparticle interaction, which is fully determined by an one-dimensional non-interacting Hamiltonian. Moreover, a closed solution for the momentum space density in the Moshinsky model is obtained.

Correlated kinetic energy density functional of ground states of harmonically confined two-electron atoms for arbitrary interparticle interaction

C. Amovilli, Norman Henry March

Utilizing the earlier work of Holas et al (2003 Phys. Lett. A 310 451) and the more recent contribution of Akbari et al (2009 Phys. Rev. A 80 032509), we construct an integral equation for the relative motion (RM) contribution tRM(r) to the correlated kinetic energy density for modelling two-electron atoms with harmonic confinement but arbitrary interparticle interaction. It is stressed that tRM = tRM[f(G)], where f(G) is the atomic scattering factor: the Fourier transform of the density ρ(r). As a simple illustrative example of this functional relation for the correlated kinetic energy density, the harmonic Moshinsky case is investigated, the scattering factor then having a Gaussian form.

Metric-space approach to potentials and its relevance to density-functional theory

Paul M. Sharp, Irene D’Amico

External potentials play a crucial role in modeling quantum systems, since, for a given interparticle interaction, they define the system Hamiltonian. We use the metric-space approach to quantum mechanics to derive, from the energy conservation law, two natural metrics for potentials. We show that these metrics are well defined for physical potentials, regardless of whether the system is in an eigenstate or if the potential is bounded. In addition, we discuss the gauge freedom of potentials and how to ensure that the metrics preserve physical relevance. Our metrics for potentials, together with the metrics for wave functions and densities from I. D'Amico et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 050401 (2011)] paves the way for a comprehensive study of the two fundamental theorems of density-functional theory. We explore these by analyzing two many-body systems for which the related exact Kohn-Sham systems can be derived. First we consider the information provided by each of the metrics, and we find that the density metric performs best in distinguishing two many-body systems. Next we study for the systems at hand the one-to-one relationships among potentials, ground-state wave functions, and ground-state densities defined by the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem as relationships in metric spaces. We find that, in metric space, these relationships are monotonic and incorporate regions of linearity, at least for the systems considered. Finally, we use the metrics for wave functions and potentials in order to assess quantitatively how close the many-body and Kohn-Sham systems are: We show that, at least for the systems analyzed, both metrics provide a consistent picture, and for large regions of the parameter space the error in approximating the many-body wave function with the Kohn-Sham wave function lies under a threshold of 10%.

Correlation in an exactly solvable two-particle quantum system

Alok Kumar Samanta, Swapan Kumar Ghosh

We have obtained an exact analytical solution for a system of two particles moving under the action of a central harmonic-oscillator potential and the mutual Coulomb interaction augmented by a potential linear in the interparticle coordinate. The expressions for the single-particle density, the exchange-correlation energy quantities, and the correlation functions are thereby derived. Numerical results on the exchange-correlation contributions are presented using plots of various local energy densities as well as the corresponding global energy quantities for varying strengths of the oscillator potential.

Wigner bosonic molecules with repulsive interactions and harmonic confinement

P. Capuzzi, Norman Henry March, Monica Tosi

Abstract In earlier work, the momentum distribution of harmonically confined bosons has been calculated for interparticle interactions which are also harmonic for an arbitrary number N of repelling Bose particles. After a brief discussion of the pair function in this model, attention is also given, but now for N = 2 , to the single-particle density for the repulsive interaction potential λ / r 12 2 , where r 12 is the interboson distance and λ the repulsive coupling strength. The single-particle density is displayed for specific values of λ , with attention focusing on the limit of strong repulsive coupling. Throughout, the focus is on the fingerprints of Wigner bosonic molecules.

Hartree-Fock-like partitioning of the two-matrix for an exactly solvable two-electron model atom

I. Nagy, Jānos Pipek

Using a Hartree-Fock-like partitioning of the two-matrix in terms of the true correlated one-matrix, the corresponding approximate ground-state energy ${E}_{0}$ is calculated for an exactly solvable closed-shell system proposed earlier by Moshinsky [Am. J. Phys. 36, 52 (1968)]. Comparisons of ${E}_{0}$ with the Hartree-Fock ground-state energy ${E}_{\mathrm{HF}}$ and the exact ground-state energy ${E}_{\mathrm{ex}}$ are made. These comparisons provide valuable insight into the usefulness of a Hartree-Fock-like partitioning of the two-matrix with repulsive interparticle potentials. In particular, an explicit quantification for the applicability limit of Lieb's [Phys. Rev. Lett. 46, 457 (1981)] bound ${E}_{0}\ensuremath{\geqslant}{E}_{\mathrm{HF}}$ with unbounded oscillator potentials is given.
