Comparison of semiclassical and quantum descriptions of saturated erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA)

Abstract

The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of Erbium Doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) is analysed in this paper. An analysis of the BER from quantum statistics is compared to the BER obtained from semiclassical approaches. In earlier work [1], the authors showed how the predictions of the two treatments approached each other in the case of ideal amplifiers for large gain. In this paper, the analysis is carried out for non-ideal, i.e., saturated EDFA and it is found that convergence of the two treatments occurs at a lower gain for saturated amplifiers than for ideal amplifiers.

The effect of upconversion on erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA)

Zhou Meng

Erbium-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA)efficiency strongly depends on erbium concentration.Highly doped erbium devices show degraded performance when compared with low concentration ones. The mechanism of upconversion is studied and the effect of it on the performance of an EDFA is analyzed numerically,by means of a set of rate equations model.Approximate analytical solutions, for the rate equations, which include the effect of the upconversion, are presented, when the amplified spontaneous emission can be neglected, compared to the pump and signal powers. Results show that the pump and signal powers all bear degradation due to upconversion.,and the effect can't be neglected when the Er3+ concentration is larger than 2.95×1025 m-3.

Complex susceptibility of rare earth-doped fiber amplifiers in the saturation regime

K. Alan Shore, R. Halus

A basic understanding of the susceptibility of fiber amplifiers (SOFA) is required to undertake device optimization, e.g., for uses in optical communications systems. In recent work Desurvire1 has developed a semiclassical treatment of the SOFA for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) taking account of the Stark splitting of the energy levels in the Er-doped glass. That work, which utilized the standard Kramers-Kronig relationships, was applicable to the unsaturated regime of operation. In this contribution, generalized Kramers-Kronig relations2 are utilized to obtain analytical expressions for the SOFA valid even in the saturation regime. It is then shown how, given experimentally measurable absorption cross-sections, the SOFA may be calculated in any operating conditions. In this way gain and refractive-index changes occurring in EDFAs may be deduced, again having universal validity.

Convergence of quantum and semiclassical models of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

A. R. Karthikeyan, Harishankar Ramachandran

In a fiber-optic link, the continuous semiclassical and discrete photon statistics models are widely used to characterize the output probability distribution of an optical amplifier. The semiclassical model describes the output as a chi-square distribution while the discrete photon statistics model describes it through the noncentral negative binomial (NNB) distribution. In this paper, we present a way of understanding the discrete photon statistical distribution at the output of the amplifier and the convergence of the same to its semiclassical counter part. We highlight this convergence through the relation between the NNB and chi-square distribution demonstrated through deviation analysis and simulations. The penalty incurred in bit error rate analysis due to semiclassical approximation over NNB is also discussed.

"Analytical Model of Pulse Amplification in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier "

Nour. A. Naser, Muhammed. R. Harb, Hassan Abid Yasser

"Doping a part of the optical fiber core by (Er3+ ) ions in presence of external pumping power will lead to form the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).The performance of this optical amplifier depends on (the power and the wavelength of the pumping laser, the power and wavelength of the input signal, amplifier length, ion concentration). These parameters will affect the characteristics of EDFA such as amplifier gain, gain saturation, noise figure and output power. However, these characteristics can be determined by solving the EDFA propagation and rate equations. The solution of these equations of two-level laser medium can be done numerically. In this paper, we are proposed a novel method to solve these equations. The reconstructed results are perfectly coincided the well known numerical results.

Distributed gain and spectral gain-saturation effects in erbium doped fibers

Waldemar Roberto Ruziscka, A.O. Dal Forno, R. Passy +2 more

Distributed gain and spectral gain-saturation effects of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) were measured using a coherent reflectrometry technique. We find that the spectral performance can be improved if the gain needs are relaxed. A hole in the spectral dependence of the gain depletion was also observed, which could be related to the Spectral Hole Burning (SHB) phenomenon.
