Abstract

A slow-light medium placed inside any interferometer can be used to reduce drastically its sensitivity. This can enhance the dynamic range of the interferometer, as well as increase the robustness of a servo system.

A fast-light medium placed inside a resonant interferometer can be used to enhance its sensitivity significantly. At the same time, the linewidth of the cavity resonance can be highly augmented without sacrificing the cavity build-up.

Enhancing the spectral sensitivity of interferometers using slow-light media

Zhimin Shi, Robert W. Boyd, Daniel J. Gauthier +1 more

We demonstrate experimentally that the spectral sensitivity of an interferometer can be greatly enhanced by introducing a slow-light medium into it. The experimental results agree very well with theoretical predictions that the enhancement factor of the spectral sensitivity is equal to the group index n(g) of the slow-light medium.

We show both theoretically and experimentally that the spectral sensitivity/resolution of an interferometer can be enhanced by introducing a slow-light medium into it, and the enhancement factor equals to the group index of the medium.

How to play with the spectral sensitivity of interferometers using slow light concepts and how to do it practically

Miguel González‐Herráez, Óscar Esteban, F. B. Naranjo +1 more

We describe some interesting features that arise when slow and fast light structures are introduced in interferometers. With different configurations, one can obtain a spectral sensitivity enhancement of the interferometer or an enhanced robustness to laser frequency drifts. Furthermore, we describe simple practical ways to implement slow and fast light media in practical interferometers. We believe that these ideas may have interesting implications in optical sensing.

Spectroscopic Interferometry Using Slow-Light Media

Zhimin Shi, Robert W. Boyd, Daniel J. Gauthier

We consider a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a slow-light medium in one of its arms. We show that the frequency/wavelength sensitivity is enhanced enormously because of the large difference in group indices between the two arms.
