Abstract

We describe some interesting features that arise when slow and fast light structures are introduced in interferometers. With different configurations, one can obtain a spectral sensitivity enhancement of the interferometer or an enhanced robustness to laser frequency drifts. Furthermore, we describe simple practical ways to implement slow and fast light media in practical interferometers. We believe that these ideas may have interesting implications in optical sensing.

We demonstrate experimentally that the spectral sensitivity of an interferometer can be greatly enhanced by introducing a slow-light medium into it. The experimental results agree very well with theoretical predictions that the enhancement factor of the spectral sensitivity is equal to the group index n(g) of the slow-light medium.

High sensitivity slow light interferometer

Yundong Zhang, Cai Yuan-Xue, yang chaobo +3 more

A novel interferometer is designed based on the dispersive property of slow light media. The numerical simulation on its physical process proves that the spectral sensitivity of interferometer can be enhanced effectively using the slow light medium. And the sensitivity is proportional to the group refractive index of the slow light medium. A further investigation gives the general method of designing slow light interferometers taking into account the dispersive property of GaAs. It is theoretically demonstrated that the spectral sensitivity of an interferometer can be greatly enhanced by dispersive property of semiconductor GaAs in nearinfrared region.

Spectroscopic Interferometry Using Slow-Light Media

We consider a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a slow-light medium in one of its arms. We show that the frequency/wavelength sensitivity is enhanced enormously because of the large difference in group indices between the two arms.

Enhancing the sensitivity of interferometer by the way of slow light

Recent years, the technology of slow light generations and applications are becoming hot topics, including data buffering in optical communications and optical signal delay. In this paper, we propose the application of slow light in the field of optical sensor and illustrate several principles and structures to enhance the sensitivity of interferometers based on slow light. According to the experiment results, the sensitivity of the interferometers enhance 600 times at most; however, the sensitivity can enhance 107 times in theory; moreover, the volume of the interferometer can be reduced. The miniaturization and precision devices must be applied and researched deeply in the field of sensor and measurement technology.
