Abstract

The single-spin-flip Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm is applied to an Ising ferromagnet with mixed spins of S=1/2 and S=1 and a crystal-field interaction. The critical temperatures and exponents both in the absence and presence of the crystal-field interaction are investigated with finite-size scaling theory. The critical temperature that we obtained in zero crystal field is very close to the high-temperature series-expansion result. The finite-size scaling results for the critical exponents yield the two-dimensional Ising-model values, which are in good agreement with those suggested by the universality hypothesis. The phase diagram of this model is obtained and comparisons are made with other approximate methods when available.

MONTE CARLO STUDY OF THE PHASE DIAGRAM OF ISING FERROMAGNET WITH MIXED SPINS OF S=l/2 AND S=l WITH A CRYSTAL FIELD INTERACTION ON THE HONEYCOMB LATTICE

ZHANG GUO-MING, YANG CHUAN-ZHANG, 苏州大学物理系,苏州215006

The single-spin-flip Metropolis-Monte-Carlo algorithm is applied to the study of phase diagram of Ising ferromagnet with mixed spins of S = l/2 and S = 1 with a crystal field interaction on the honeycomb lattice. The phase diagram we obtained is very close to the exact solutions and better than the results of effective field theory with correlations. All these make us arrixe the conclusion that the Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm can also be used to study the mixed-spin model.

Monte Carlo study of the Spin-1 Baxter-Wu model in a crystal field

M. L. M. Costa, J. A. Plascak

The two-dimensional Baxter-Wu model with spin-1, in the presence of a crystal field, is studied by using Monte Carlo simulations. The standard single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm is used to generate the configurations from which the order parameter, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility are measured. Single histogram techniques are used to get the results close to the phase transitions. The finite-size scaling procedure is employed in order to obtain the critical behavior. The simulations have shown that the critical exponents are different from the spin-1/2 case and are crystal field dependent.

Magnetic Properties of a Square Lattice Ising Ferromagnetic System for Different Spins with Monte Carlo Simulation

A. Azdouh, Said Harir, Anouar Elidrysy +3 more

Using the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method combined with the Metropolis algorithm, we explore the magnetic properties of a two-dimensional (2D) spin system with spins 1, 2 and 3. The adapted simulation to the Ising model aims to study the impact of the correction term a of the interaction with second neighbors and the crystal field D on the critical temperature [Formula: see text] of the 2D anisotropic square lattice for different integer values of spins. The obtained results demonstrate that the critical temperature [Formula: see text] is significantly affected by the competing interactions between the anisotropy parameter, second-neighbor interaction and the crystal field. The considered model exhibits a critical phase transition regardless of the spin S value where the critical temperature increases with the value of S. Note that this phase transition occurs under the condition [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the obtained results show that the complex interactions give rise to a variety of phase diagrams, thereby revealing the richness of possible magnetic behaviors in the studied system.

Monte Carlo Twist Method Applied to the Two-Dimensional Ising Antiferromagnets in Magnetic Fields: Tests of the Method and Critical-Point Amplitudes

Hideo Shioda, Yohtaro Ueno

We apply our Monte Carlo twist method to the antiferromagnetic Ising model on square lattices in several uniform fields imposing fixed boundary conditions. We have estimated the critical temperature T c and critical exponent ν at each field. The former well agree with the analytic results of Müller-Hartmann and Zittartz, and the latter are all close to ν=1. We have calculated the finite-size critical-point amplitude of the interfacial free energy Ξ 0 which is believed to be universal. Our estimate of Ξ 0 at zero field is in good agreement with the analytic result of Abraham and Švrakić. We also report for the first time estimates of Ξ 0 at finite fields. Further, comparison is made with results of Mon and Jasnow.

Critical Properties of a Spin-3/2 Ising Model on a Square Lattice

Norihiro Tsushima, Yasushi Honda, Tsuyoshi Horiguchi

We investigate a spin-3/2 Ising model on a square lattice by using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We obtain phase diagrams of the ground state. We carried out the MC simulations in order to calculate the critical temperature and the critical exponent η. We estimate the critical exponents ν, α and γ by using a finite size scaling analysis. We also calculate the critical temperature, the central charge c and the critical exponent ν by using the DMRG method. From the results obtained by the MC simulations and by the DMRG method, we discuss a universality class of the system. It is found that the values of critical exponents are determined by means of the degeneracy of the ground state. This result suggests that the universality does not hold for the spin-3/2 Ising model. Furthermore we find a possibility of a breakdown of the hyperscaling law. We also confirm that the ferrimagnetic phase exists in a parameter region where the ground state has a fourfold degeneracy, and that a transition between the ferrimagnetic phase and the ferromagnetic phase exists in addition to that between the ferromagnetic phase and the paramagnetic phase.

Modelo de Ising: um estudo sobre os algorítimos Metropolis e Wang-Landau

Abel Nascimento Ribeiro Santos

In this work we present a study of the thermodynamical properties of the spin-1=2 two-dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic interactions at zero external magnetic eld. We used Monte Carlo simulations, through Metropolis andWang-Landau algorithms. The critical exponents and the corresponding critical temperatures are obtained by both methods using the nite-size scaling hypothesis. A comparison between the exact values and the results obtained from both algorithms was made, not only quantitatively but also in terms of computational times.
