Abstract

We study optical bistability and multistability in multilayer coupled-cavity thin film structures comprised of high-index and low-index materials. The reduction of the bistable threshold and necessary index change are studied as functions of structural parameters by explicitly mapping the evolution of transmission and phase. We find that the coupled-cavity structure has no clear advantage over single-cavity structures for bistable operation. However, there is an advantage in using coupled-cavity structures for multistability in that the threshold for multistability can be reduced.

Optical bistability and multistability in one-dimensional periodic metal-dielectric photonic crystal

F. Y. Wang, Guixin Li, Hoi Lam Tam +2 more

The optical bistability and multistability in one-dimensional photonic crystal with the periodic metal-dielectric structure is investigated theoretically. In linear transmission, a structure with N periods will support N−1 resonant modes which correspond to the transmission peaks. Strong localized effect in these resonant modes is obtained. Optical bistability and multistability can be achieved when the incident wavelength is close to a resonance, which can be seen as an effect of the dynamic shifting of the wavelength of the resonant modes. It is found that the threshold for optical bistability in the periodic resonant structure is lower than the nonresonant metal-dielectric structure.

Optical multistability in nonlinear superlattices with very thin layers

V.M. Agranovich, С. А. Киселев, D. L. Mills

We consider the theory of transmission of electromagnetic radiation through a superlattice of finite length, in which the size of the unit cell is small compared to an optical wavelength. One film in each unit cell is assumed to exhibit an optical nonlinearity of Kerr form. We show that a slow spatial modulation of the thickness of the layers leads to a structure with a low threshold for optical bistability.

Analysis of bistable switching threshold in one-dimensional photonic crystals

Meiping Jiang, Xiaoming Shen, Xingfang Jiang +1 more

We study the optical bistable properties in one-dimensional photonic crystal with symmetric structure (AB)N(D)M(BA)N, where A is high refractive index medium, B is low refractive index medium, D is defect layer, N is the number of layer periods at the left and right of the defect layer. M determines the thickness of the defect layer with Kerr medium. First, we analyze mechanisms producing bistability by the structure consisted of a nonlinear layer sandwiched between Bragg reflectors. Then by using the transfer matrix method, we calculate numerically the threshold value of the bistability switching in one-dimensional photonic crystals with structure (AB)N(D)M(BA)N. The investigations show that the number of layer periods (N) and the thickness of the defect layer (M) influence the threshold value of the bistability switching. We confirm the parameter of the bistability switching to produce the lower threshold value.

Phase control of optical bistability and multistability in a tripod four-level atomic medium

Xionghui Hu, Hongjun Zhang, Hui Sun +3 more

Optical bistability and multistability behaviors are investigated in a tripod four-level atomic configuration, including a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that optical bistability and multistability can be obtained by changing the relative phase of the driven fields and the intensity of the microwave field. In addition, we can switch optical bistability to optical multistability by adjusting the relative phase of the driven fields or vice versa, and the threshold can be controlled via changing the parameters of the scheme.

Optical multistability in 1D photonic crystal doped with carbon-nanotube quantum dot nanostructures

Abstract The optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) in one-dimensional photonic crystals doped with carbon-nanotube quantum dots (CNT QDs) is theoretically investigated. Our investigations show that due to spin–orbit coupling in CNT QDs the threshold of optical bistability can be adjusted. Also, the switching from OB to OM, or vice versa, can be achieved by controlling the transverse magnetic field. Our proposed model can be used as a suitable structure based on CNT QDs for realizing all-optical switching devices. Moreover, we realize that the controlling of OB and OM can be done without changing the thickness of the layers.

Optical bistability through the cavity effect in a four-level open atomic medium

Hamid Reza Hamedi

The optical bistability and multistability behavior in a ring cavity for the four-level open atomic system, driven by two coupling fields has been analyzed. It is shown that the presence of exit rate from cavity is having a dominant effect on generating the optical bi(multi) stability on the system. It is found that the effects of the injection rates can be used to control the threshold intensity. It is also found that optical bistability can convert to optical multistability or vice versa via the effect of intensity and detuning of the coupling fields.
