Quantum theory of two-photon optical tristability: Part I

Abstract

We consider N three-level atoms in a single ported-optical ring cavity interacting through two- photon transitions with a cavity mode. The cavity is driven by an external coherent field, with detuning from the interferometer and the atomic transition. Damping of the atoms and the cavity is included.

Bifurcations and multistability in two-photon processes

Daniel F. Walls, C. V. Kunasz, P. D. Drummond +1 more

We consider an intracavity nonlinear medium interacting with two modes of the electromagnetic field via a two-photon process. The cavity is coherently driven at the frequencies of the two modes. We consider as the intracavity medium (a) a two-photon absorber, and (b) $N$ three-level atoms. These systems display a new class of bifurcations, and, in the case of the two-photon absorber, optical tristability is possible.

Theory of two-photon optical tristability

J.A. Hermann, Daniel F. Walls

An intracavity two-photon absorber interacting with two coherently driven cavity modes is studied. The possible stable output configurations of the cavity-mode amplitudes are determined for both the absorptive and dispersive cases. Under certain conditions this system is shown to display optical bi- and tristability.

Quantum theory of optical bistability without adiabatic elimination

M. D. Reid

A quantum theory describing N two-level atoms in a coherently driven single-mode optical ring cavity is presented. The usual approximation that one may adiabatically eliminate either the cavity or atomic variables is not made. Hence the results are valid for a range of relative cavity and atomic relaxation rates. The theory is based on the linearized equations derived in the positive P representation. A simple analytical solution is presented, including the effect of detunings, for the steady-state transmitted spectrum. The transmitted intensity and squeezing spectra are discussed.

Squeezed-vacuum-induced optical tristability in an atom-cavity system

Jiahui Ning, Cunjin Liu, Min Xie +3 more

In this paper we investigate the model of $N$ two-level atoms coupled to a squeezed vacuum inside a coherently driven cavity. By a linear stability analysis in the semiclassical description, we find that the optical tristability emerges in our system owing to the presence of the squeezed vacuum. Moreover, the transition among monostable, bistable, and tristable states can be realized by manipulating the squeezing phase or the squeezing strength of the squeezed vacuum. We also show the signatures of quantum tristability by using the $Q$ function and quantum trajectory methods for the situation of a single atom and low cavity photon number. Our paper offers a way to realize optical tristability in a two-level atomic system.

Two- and one-photon transitions in a three-level atom inside a cavity with arbitrary damping

G. Adam, JOSIP SEKE, Otto Hittmaır

Different aspects of the interaction of a three-level atom with a single-mode radiation field are studied inside a cavity with damping. It is demonstrated that two-photon transitions emerge from cascade one-photon transitions by increasing the detuning parameters of the levels. It is also shown that a simulation of the two-level atom with one-photon transitions can be achieved by changing the detuning parameters adequately. In all cases, the influence of cavity damping is examined. Finally, we point out that the second-order field correlation function approaches its minimum value for t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} in some cases.

Single-atom phase bistability in a fundamental model of quantum optics

S. Ya. Kilin, T. B. Krinitskaya

It is shown that a two-level atom in a coherently driven optical cavity exhibits optical phase bistability in the case with strong Rabi frequencies and cavity mode damping that is fast compared with atomic damping by spontaneous emission into noncavity modes.
