Abstract

We propose one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) arrays of magnetic surface microtraps for cold alkali atoms using some arrays of current-carrying wires and we calculate the spatial distributions of magnetic fields from the 1D and 2D arrays of current-carrying wires. The field gradients and curvatures from a single magnetic microtrap are analysed, and some interesting and periodic magnetic-well microstructures are found. The result shows that a magnetic-field gradient greater than 2.4 × 10 5 G/cm and a field curvature greater than 4.05 × 10 8 G/cm 2 can be generated in our array of magnetic microtraps, which can be used to realize the 1D and 2D arrays of Bose-Einstein condensations (or 1D and 2D arrays of Bose clusters) by rf-induced evaporative cooling, and then to form 1D and 2D atomic magnetic lattices, even to prepare 1D and 2D photonic crystals.

Novel atomic magnetic lattices with arrays of Z-shaped wires

Yun Min, Yin Jian-Ping

Two novel arrays of magnetic surface microtraps to construct 1D and 2D atomic magnetic lattices are proposed. The spatial distributions of the magnetic fields from current-carrying wires and their gradients and curvatures are calculated, respectively. Our study shows that these arrays of magnetic surface microtraps with a minimal non-zero B-value at each well center can be used to form 1D and 2D atomic magnetic lattices, or to realize arrays of BEC, even to prepare photonic crystals.

Magnetic Surface Microtraps for Two—Species Bose—Einstein Condensations

胡建军, 印建平

We propose a novel magnetic surface microtrap(i.e. a double Z-wire trap) for the study of two-species Bose-Einstein condensations. The spatial distributions of the magnetic fields from the double Z-wire configurations and their gradients and curvatures are calculated and analysed. The result shows that the proposed surface trap has double magnetic wells and can be continuously changed into a single-well trap be reducing the current in a straight wire, and the maximum field gradient greater than 5×10^4G/cm and the maximum field curvature (at each trap centre) greater than 2.5×10^7G/cm^2 can be generated in our double-well traps, which can be used to realize two-species Bose-Einstein condensations and to study the properties of double-well Bose-Einstein condensations and so on
