Multicritical two-dimensional vertex models

Abstract

We study the multicritical behavior of a class of two-dimensional ice-type vertex models on different lattices using renormalization-group theory. The models are classified by an integer m, with m=2 corresponding to the known square lattice case. For m>2, the specific-heat exponent is a=(m-2)/(m-1) with an upper critical dimensional confluent (lnt${)}^{1/2}$ divergence for m=3. The nature of the transition is similar to the mth-order multicritical point, yet the exponents are not those known from c1 conformal invariance. The models are anisotropic with ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}$=1 and ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$=12. A few special features of the models are discussed.

Exact exponents for infinitely many new multicritical points

David A. Huse

Andrews, Baxter, and Forrester have recently solved two infinite sequences of models that are generalizations of the Ising and hard-square models and exhibit multicriticality. The nature of these new two-dimensional multicritical points is examined in order to determine what universality classes they may represent. Appropriate order parameters are defined and their critical exponents reported. One infinite sequence of multicritical points are continuous melting transitions of $p\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1$ commensurate ordered phases for all integers $p\ensuremath{\ge}2$. The other sequence appears to consist of "generic" multicritical points terminating lines of $n$-phase coexistence, again for all integers $n\ensuremath{\ge}2$. The multicritical exponents in this latter sequence coincide with those found by Friedan, Qiu, and Shenker on the basis of assuming conformal invariance and unitarity.

CRITICAL SPIN-1 VERTEX MODELS AND O(n) MODELS

Bernard Nienhuis

A method is presented by which critical and multicritical points of spin-1 (three-state) vertex models and classical O(n) models on two-dimensional lattices are determined. It is a straightforward generalization of the ideas that earlier led to the determination of critical points and critical exponents of a honeycomb O(n) model. On the square lattice the methods leads to tricritical as well as critical loci. For n=2 a larger critical manifold is found than for other values of n. At the critical and multicritical points thus produced the models turn out to be soluble. The method is applicable to O(n) models and spin-1 vertex models on any planar lattice.

Scaling theory of the Potts-model multicritical point

John Cardy, Michael Nauenberg, Douglas J. Scalapino

A theory of the scaling behavior near the ${q}_{c}=4$ state multicritical point of the two-dimensional Potts lattice gas model is developed. Proceeding from the assumption that a dilution field becomes marginal at the multicritical point while the thermal and ordering fields are relevant, a set of differential renormalization group (RG) equations for these fields are constructed. Keeping terms through second order we find that these equations are characterized by five universal parameters which we evaluate using exact as well as conjectured results. Based upon these RG equations, we investigate the physical properties of the two-dimensional Potts lattice gas for $q$ near ${q}_{c}$. For the pure Potts model with $q={q}_{c}$ we find logarithmic temperature corrections to the specific heat and the spontaneous magnetization. At ${T}_{c}$ we find $\mathrm{ln}(r)$ corrections to the power law behavior of the spin-spin correlation function. For the dilute Potts model with $q={q}_{c}$ we find that the latent heat, the discontinuity in the magnetization, and the discontinuity in the coexisting densities vanish with an essential singularity as $T$ approaches the multicritical point from the first-order side. Results for $q>{q}_{c}$ and $q<{q}_{c}$ are also given.

Ice-Rule Vertex Model on a 34-6 Lattice

Ken‐Yu Lin

An ice-rule vertex model on a 3-4-6 lattice with staggered (site-dependent) vertex weights is considered. The special case of a free-fermion model is solved exactly by the Pfaffian method. The system exhibits second-order phase transition and the specific heat diverges with an exponent 1/2.

Phase Transitions in Two-Dimensional Systems

Eytan Domany, Eberhard K. Riedel

Two recently studied experimental systems are shown to constitute realizations of two-dimensional anisotropic $N$-vector models. Along with a renormalization-group treatment of a general Hamiltonian encompassing these models, we discuss new kinds of multicritical points, nonuniversal critical behavior, and experiments for further study of these systems.

Phase diagram and critical behavior of the spin-1 Baxter-Wu model with a crystal field

M. L. M. Costa, J. C. Xavier, J. A. Plascak

The phase diagram and critical behavior of the spin-1 Baxter-Wu model with a crystal field in two dimensions is explored by renormalization group, conventional finite-size scaling, and conformal invariance techniques. We found that the phase diagram of this model is qualitatively the same as that of the dilute 4-states Potts model, presenting a multicritical point for a finite value of the crystal field, in disagreement with previous work based on finite-size calculations. However, our results indicate that the critical exponents vary continuously along the second-order transition line, differently from the expected behavior of the dilute 4-states Potts model.
