AmplitudeNth-power squeezing inkth-harmonic generation

You-Bang Zhan

We show that the amplitude Nth-power squeezing can be produced in kth-harmonic generation. The amplitude Nth-power squeezing of the fundamental can exist if the kth harmonic is originally in a coherent state which includes the vacuum. It is also shown that the normal squeezing of the kth harmonic depends on the amplitude kth-power squeezing of the fundamental.

Generation of higher-order squeezing of quantum electromagnetic fields

C. K. Hong, L. Mandeļ

The concept of Nth-order squeezing and intrinsic Nth-order squeezing is introduced and applied to several physical situations that are known to exhibit second-order squeezing. It is shown that the field produced in degenerate parametric down-conversion is squeezed to all orders, as well as being intrinsically squeezed to orders 2,6,10,. . . . The same is true for the fundamental mode in second-harmonic generation within the short-time approximation, but in this case there is only intrinsic second-order squeezing. In resonance fluorescence from a two-level atom squeezing is again found to be intrinsically a second-order phenomenon, although an intrinsic second-order effect can give rise to a weak form of higher-order squeezing.

Interferometric autocorrelation in the ultraviolet utilizing spontaneous parametric down-conversion inside an enhancement cavity

Patrick Michelberger, Roland Krischek, Witlef Wieczorek +2 more

Autocorrelation is a common method to estimate the duration of ultrashort laser pulses. In the ultraviolet (UV) regime it is challenging to employ the process of second-harmonic generation, most prominently due to absorption in nonlinear crystals at very short wavelengths. Here we show how to utilize spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) to generate an autocorrelation signal in the infrared (IR) for UV pulses. Our method utilizes the nth-order emission of the SPDC process, which occurs for low pumping powers proportional to the nth power of the UV intensity. Thus, counting 2n down-converted photons directly yields the nth-order autocorrelation. The method, now with detection of near-IR photons, is applied to the first direct measurement of ultrashort UV pulses circulating inside a UV enhancement cavity.
