Modeling of optical bistability

Róbert Čerňanský

My work is dealing with nonlinear optical event called optical bistability or multistability which is expressed during an interaction of high-energetic laser beam with material. Optical bistability may occur in absortive coeficient or in refractive indice (or both). My work is more-less aimed as a theoretical experiment where I had predefined initial conditions and by the help of Microsoft Office Excel 2007 programm I have modeled the dispersive optical bistability for nanocrystalitc form of silicon dioxide and cadmium selenid. Efectos del solvente en la respuesta óptica de un sistema de dos niveles

José Luis Paz, M. Izquierdo, Luis G. Rodríguez +1 more

In this work, the thermal reservoir effects over the absorptive and dispersive nonlinear optical properties of a two-level molecular system in presence of classical electromagnetic fields, were modeled. The collective effects proper of the thermal reservoir are modeled as a time dependent frequency, whose manifestation is the broadening of the upper level according to a prescribed random function. Using the stochastic optical Bloch equations, analytical expression for the nonlinear induced susceptibilities and absorptive and dispersive optical properties, were obtained. Numerical calculations were carried out to construct surfaces corresponding to these optical properties as a function of the pump-probe frequency detuning, relationships between the longitudinal and transversal relaxation times, and molecular concentration of solute. Finally, we see an attenuation of these optical responses by the solvent effects and the high pump-intensity.

Coherent control of some optical properties in a system of molecular magnets

Ali Raheli, Hamid Reza Hamedi, Mostafa Sahrai +1 more

Abstract A scheme is proposed for the coherent control of some optical properties in a crystal of molecular magnets based on the density matrix approach. It is shown that in the presence of a uniform dc magnetic field and two ac magnetic fields with different frequencies, the dispersion and absorption properties of the system of molecular magnets can be efficiently controlled. In particular, it is found that the probe absorption can be converted to probe amplification. Simultaneously, the superluminal light propagation changes to the subluminal propagation of the light pulse. The controllable optical multistability is then discussed for the system under consideration. The medium proposed here is a solid. Thus, because of its flexible design and the long relaxation times, it may open up an avenue to explore possibilities for quantum and nonlinear optics, as well as quantum information processing in condensed-state materials, and may result in striking effects on technology.
