Modeling of optical bistability

Abstract

My work is dealing with nonlinear optical event called optical bistability or multistability which is expressed during an interaction of high-energetic laser beam with material. Optical bistability may occur in absortive coeficient or in refractive indice (or both). My work is more-less aimed as a theoretical experiment where I had predefined initial conditions and by the help of Microsoft Office Excel 2007 programm I have modeled the dispersive optical bistability for nanocrystalitc form of silicon dioxide and cadmium selenid. Dynamics of optical bistability: a simple model

Denis L. Weaire, M. Al-Hourani

Various computational results of relevance to the dynamics of optical bistability are presented on the basis of an idealized model in which narrow input beams, optically bistable by virtue of a nonlinear refractive index, interact through diffusion. These results include the determination of regimes of stability for various configurations and the outcome of a study of switching waves.

Particle interaction with atoms in optical lattice

Filip Vozáb

The thesis discusses description of associative detachment of electron in the iont interaction with neutral atoms in optical lattice. This is given by combination of the model for interaction of particles in optical lattice, given by periodic potential, and of the model for associative detachment of electron, describe by imaginary component of the potential. In thesis is stated form of Schrödinger's equation for periodic potential, and subsequent solution of such equation in case of general complex and non hermitian Hamiltonian (because of imaginary component of potential). I specifically compute complex energetic levels one-dimensional model with numeric method from software package EISPACK for non hermitian Hamiltonian decomposed into finite base. Nonlinear and optically bistable effects in cadmium sulphide

Claus F. Klingshirn, Klaus M. Bohnert, K. Kempf +1 more

Abstract Among the numerous optical nonlinearities known for CdS, we select here those connected with the transition from a low-density gas of excitons to an electron-hole plasma. The properties of the plasma are reviewed and it is demonstrated that the variations of the indices of absorption and refraction, which occur in this phase transition, allow for the realization of optical bistability.

Optical bistability: towards all-optical devices

Eusebio Bernabéu, Pedro Martín Mejías, R Martínez-Herrer

The phenomenon of optical bistability is the object of increasing interest owing to its possibilities for important device applications. The object of this short review is to give a description of this current field either from its conceptual theoretical basis or from its applications on optical circuitry and computing. Contents include three sections devoted to optical instabilities, bistable materials and international programs on this topic.

Optical nonlinearity and bistability in liquid crystals

Y. Ron Shen

Abstract Molecular reorientation and laser heating induced by an optical field can yield significant changes in the refractive indices in a nematic liquid crystal. A c.w. laser beam is intense enough to induce a phase retardation much larger than 2pi in a nematic film less than 100 pm thick. Optical bistability in such a film sandwiched between mirrors can be readily observed. Coupling between the two mechanisms for induced refractive indices can lead to interesting results in the bistable operation.
