Quantum key distribution with multi letter alphabets

Abstract

We present a new protocol for continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD). The novelty of the protocol is a multi letter alphabet represented by coherent states of light with a fixed amplitude and variable phase. Information is encoded in the phase of a coherent state which can be chosen from a regular discrete set consisting, however, of an arbitrary number of letters. We evaluate the security of the protocol against the beam splitting attack. As a result we show the proposed protocol has advantages over the standard two letter coherent state QKD protocol, especially in the case when losses in the communication channel are low.

Coherent State Quantum Key Distribution with Multi Letter Alphabets

Сыч Денис Васильевич, Gerd Leuchs

We present a protocol for quantum key distribution using discrete modulation of coherent states of light. Information is encoded in the variable phase of coherent states which can be chosen from a regular discrete set ranging from binary to continuous modulation, similar to phase-shift-keying in classical communication. Information is decoded by simultaneous homodyne measurement of both quadratures and requires no active choice of basis. The protocol utilizes either direct or reverse reconciliation, both with and without postselection. We analyze the security of the protocol and show how to enhance it by the optimal choice of all variable parameters of the quantum signal.

Continuous phase-shift quantum key distribution

Сыч Денис Васильевич, Gerd Leuchs

In this paper we continue the idea of improving QKD by varying a quantum alphabet. We introduce a protocol for continuous variable QKD, where information is encoded in continuously modulated phase of coherent states of light (continuous phase-shift keying). The corresponding quantum alphabet is a circle in phase space, thus the proposed protocol is in a certain sense in between binary modulation and Gaussian modulation.

An introductory review of the theory of continuous-variable quantum key distribution: Fundamentals, protocols, and security

Maron F Anka, John A. Mora Rodríguez, Douglas F. Pinto +3 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has emerged as a promising approach for secure quantum communication, offering advantages such as high key generation rates, compatibility with standard telecommunication infrastructure, and potential for integration on photonic chips. This review provides an accessible introduction to the theory of CV-QKD, aimed at researchers entering this rapidly developing field. We focus on fundamental concepts, key protocols, and security analysis essential for understanding CV-QKD systems, with a special emphasis on prepare-and-measure protocols using coherent states under asymptotic security conditions. We explain their equivalence to entanglement-based protocols and detail the security proof framework against collective attacks, encompassing both Gaussian and discrete modulation schemes. We also briefly address more advanced topics, including measurement-device-independent CV-QKD and finite-size security analysis. This work is motivated by Brazil's growing investment in quantum communication technologies. By presenting a clear learning path from basic concepts to advanced topics, this work aims to equip newcomers with the essential tools to engage with current research in CV-QKD, thereby supporting the training of a new generation of researchers in this strategic field.

QUANTUM KEY DISTRIBUTION WITH FOUR ALPHABETIC LETTERS NON-GAUSSIAN MODULATION USING SQUEEZING STATES

Sheng Zhang, Jian Wang, Chaojing Tang +1 more

We present a new non-Gaussian quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol using squeezed states. Compared with a binary modulation, the efficiency can be improved when a four alphabetic letters modulation is chosen. We then analyze the security of the protocol under a collective entangling cloner attack, which is a powerful attack strategy in continuous variable QKD. We also show how the modulation coefficient affects the key rate, then the key rate can be maximized by choosing an optimal coefficient.
