Abstract

We use the theory of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations to derive an expression for the current density of the propagating atoms coupled out of the condensate under the influence of gravity. By describing the propagation vector of the atoms and using a theoretical definition of the coherence length, we calculate the coherence lengths of 37K, 141Ce, and 249Fm atom lasers numerically. Our calculation method is verified with the available experimental and theoretical data in the literature. The results showed a very good agreement.

Theory Of A Pulsed RF Atom Laser

J. Schneider, Axel Schenzle

An atom laser based on RF-outcoupling can be operated in a coherently pulsed way by using two radio frequencies. Such a two-mode atom laser can be described by coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations which are valid for very low temperatures (T≈0). We have derived analytic expressions for the output rate and the visibility of the pulsed atomic beam in the weak coupling regime. A comparison between the analytical and numerical results shows a good agreement. This proves our assumption that the outcoupling process may be seen as the coherent outcoupling of two independent atomic beams. Though our model is only one-dimensional, we expect also a good agreement with the full 3D situation of experiment; the estimate for the value of the output rate might be only in the right order of magnitude16. Summarizing, the manipulation of trapped Bose condensates with electromagnetic waves opens a wide new area for the field of coherent atom optics.

Coherence Properties of a Continuously Pumped Atom Laser at Finite Temperature

Geoff M. Lee, Ashton S. Bradley, Matthew J. Davis

A continuous wave (cw) atom laser will most likely be realised by outcoupling from a reservoir containing a Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature. This will mean that the correlation properties and linewidth of the cw atom laser beam will be influenced by the thermal nature of the reservoir. Here we report on simulations using the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii formalism for finite temperature dynamics to find the steady state properties of the outcoupled beam. We determine how the linewidth and correlation length depend on the condensate size, temperature, and outcoupling properties, and determine the optimum parameters for cw atom laser operation.

Self Focussing as a Coherence Propagation Phenomena. An Application to Calculate the Coherence Length for an Atom Laser

Castellanos, L. M., Lopez, F. E.

A theoretical description in terms of the coherence propagation is given for self-focussing. The concept of coherence length is defined in terms of free, self-focussing propagation giving results in accordance with well known experimental criteria for the laser. Extension of the method is given for an Atom Laser showing good results in agreement with recents numerical results of Trippenbach et. al.: J. Phys. B:At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 33, 47-54 (2000).

Outcoupling from a Bose-Einstein condensate in the strong-field limit

Arnold, Caroline, Carola Beck, Peter Federsel +4 more

Atoms can be extracted from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by driving spin-flips to untrapped states. The coherence properties of the BEC are transfered to the released atoms, creating a coherent beam of matter refered to as an atom laser. In this work, the extraction of atoms from a BEC is investigated numerically by solving a coupled set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations in up to three dimensions. The result is compared to experimental data and a semiclassical rate model. In the weak-coupling regime, quantitative agreement is reached between theory and experiment and a semiclassical rate model. In the strong-coupling regime, the atom laser enters a trapped state that manifests itself in a saturation of the rate of out-coupled atoms observed in new experimental data. The semiclassical rate model fails, but the numerical descriptions yield qualitative agreement with experimental data at the onset of saturation.

Coherence properties of an atom laser

Marek Trippenbach, Y. B. Band, Mark Edwards +8 more

We study the coherence properties of an atom laser, which operates by extracting atoms from a gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate via a two-photon Raman process, by analysing a recent experiment (Hagley et al 1999 Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 3112). We obtain good agreement with the experimental data by solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in three dimensions both numerically and with a Thomas-Fermi model. The coherence is strongly affected by the space-dependent phase developed by the condensate when the trapping potential is turned off.

Longitudinal Profiles of Atom Laser Propagation in a Cigar-Shaped Trap

Teguh Budi Prayitno, Widyanirmala Widyanirmala, Idrus Husin Belfaqih +2 more

Focusing on the cigar-shaped trap model, we provide longitudinal profiles of a weakly outcoupled atom laser propagation both inside and outside the Bose-Einstein condensate regions. The propagation itself is generally represented by inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation which is derived from a set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations by applying the available conditions. We also show that by imposing boundary condition and using quantum oscillator model, energy of the outcoupled atom laser outside the Bose-Einstein condensate region is quantized while there is no analytical solution for the propagation of the outcoupled atom laser inside the Bose-Einstein condensate region.
