Abstract

Focusing on the cigar-shaped trap model, we provide longitudinal profiles of a weakly outcoupled atom laser propagation both inside and outside the Bose-Einstein condensate regions. The propagation itself is generally represented by inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation which is derived from a set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations by applying the available conditions. We also show that by imposing boundary condition and using quantum oscillator model, energy of the outcoupled atom laser outside the Bose-Einstein condensate region is quantized while there is no analytical solution for the propagation of the outcoupled atom laser inside the Bose-Einstein condensate region.

Discrete Energies of a Weakly Outcoupled Atom Laser Beam Outside the Bose–Einstein Condensate Region

Teguh Budi Prayitno

We consider the possibility of a discrete set of energies of a weakly outcoupled atom laser beam to the homogeneous Schrödinger equation with anisotropic harmonic trap in Cartesian coordinates outside the Bose–Einstein condensate region. This treatment is used because working in the cylindrical coordinates is not really possible, even though we implement the cigar-shaped trap case. The Schrödinger equation appears to replace a set of two-coupled Gross– Pitaevskii equations by enabling the weak-coupling assumption. This atom laser can be produced in a simple way that only involves extracting the atoms in a condensate from by using the radio frequency field. We initially present the relation between condensates as sources and atom laser as an output by exploring the previous work of Riou et al. in the case of theoretical work for the propagation of atom laser beams. We also show that even though the discrete energies are obtained by means of an approaching harmonic oscillator, degeneracy is only available in two states because of the anisotropic external potential

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in cigar-shaped traps

A. M. Kamchatnov, V. S. Shchesnovich

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an elongated cigar-shaped trap is reduced to an effective system of nonlinear equations depending on only one space coordinate along the trap axis. The radial distribution of the condensate density and its radial velocity are approximated by Gaussian functions with real and imaginary exponents, respectively, with parameters depending on the axial coordinate and time. The effective one-dimensional system is applied to a description of the ground state of the condensate, to dark and bright solitons, to the sound and radial compression waves propagating in a dense condensate, and to weakly nonlinear waves in repulsive condensate. In the low-density limit our results reproduce the known formulas. In the high-density case our description of solitons goes beyond the standard approach based on the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The dispersion relations for the sound and radial compression waves are obtained in a wide region of values of the condensate density. The Korteweg--de Vries equation for weakly nonlinear waves is derived and the existence of bright solitons on a constant background is predicted for a dense enough condensate with a repulsive interaction between the atoms.

Outcoupling from a Bose-Einstein condensate in the strong-field limit

Arnold, Caroline, Carola Beck, Peter Federsel +4 more

Atoms can be extracted from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by driving spin-flips to untrapped states. The coherence properties of the BEC are transfered to the released atoms, creating a coherent beam of matter refered to as an atom laser. In this work, the extraction of atoms from a BEC is investigated numerically by solving a coupled set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations in up to three dimensions. The result is compared to experimental data and a semiclassical rate model. In the weak-coupling regime, quantitative agreement is reached between theory and experiment and a semiclassical rate model. In the strong-coupling regime, the atom laser enters a trapped state that manifests itself in a saturation of the rate of out-coupled atoms observed in new experimental data. The semiclassical rate model fails, but the numerical descriptions yield qualitative agreement with experimental data at the onset of saturation.

Investigations of a two-mode atom-laser model

Jens Schneider, Axel Schenzle

Atom lasers based on rf outcoupling from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate can be described by a set of generalized, coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs). If not only one but two radio frequencies are used for outcoupling, the atoms emerging from the trap have two different energies and the total wave function of the untrapped spin state is a coherent superposition which leads to a pulsed atomic beam. We present results for such a situation obtained from a one-dimensional GPE model for magnetically trapped ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ in the $F=1$ state. The wave function of the atomic beam can be approximated by a sum of two Airy functions. In the limit of weak coupling we calculate the intensity analytically.

Periodic quantum tunnelling and parametric resonance with cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We study the tunnelling properties of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate by using an effective 1D nonpolynomial nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NPSE). First we investigate a mechanism to generate periodic pulses of coherent matter by means of a Bose condensate confined in a potential well with an oscillating height of the energy barrier. We show that it is possible to control the periodic emission of matter waves and the tunnelling fraction of the Bose condensate. We find that the number of emitted particles strongly increases if the period of oscillation of the height of the energy barrier is in parametric resonance with the period of oscillation of the centre of mass of the condensate inside the potential well. Then we use NPSE to analyse the periodic tunnelling of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential which has an oscillating energy barrier. We show that the dynamics of the Bose condensate critically depends on the frequency of the oscillating energy barrier. The macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) of the condensate can be suppressed under the condition of parametric resonance between the frequency of the energy barrier and the frequency of oscillation through the barrier of the very small fraction of particles which remain untrapped during MQST.

Quantum theory of an atom laser originating from a Bose-Einstein condensate or a Fermi gas in the presence of gravity

Tobias Kramer, Mirta Rodríguez

We present a three-dimensional quantum-mechanical theory of radio-frequency-outcoupled atom lasers from trapped atomic gases in the presence of the gravitational force. Predictions for the total outcoupling rate as a function of the radio frequency and for the beam wave function are given. We establish a sum rule for the energy-integrated outcoupling, which leads to a separate determination of the coupling strength between the atoms and radiation field. For a noninteracting Bose-Einstein condensate analytic solutions are derived which are subsequently extended to include the effects of atomic interactions. The interactions enhance interference effects in the beam profile and modify the outcoupling rate of the atom laser. We provide a complete quantum-mechanical solution which is in line with experimental findings and allows us to determine the validity of commonly used approximative methods. We also extend the formalism to a fermionic atom laser and analyze the effect of superfluidity on the outcoupling of atoms.
