A Josephson Gyroscope Using Superfluids

Abstract

The Sagnac effect using matter (de Broglie) waves is considered for gyroscopic applications. Superfluid helium in a torus with a Josephson junction interupting it would be an embodiment of this idea. An optical analog of the Josephson junction is discussed. An experimental search for the Sagnac effect in superfluid helium (isotope 4) is presented.

A Nonclassical Sagnac Interferometer Using Coherence de Broglie Waves

Byoung Seung HAM

A Sagnac interferometer has been a powerful tool for gyroscope, spectroscopy, and navigation based on the Sagnac effects between counterpropagating twin fields in a closed loop, whose difference phase is caused by Einstein’s special relativity. Here, a nonclassical version of a Sagnac interferometer is presented using completely different physics of coherence de Broglie waves (CBW) in a cavity, where CBW is a nonclassical feature overcoming the standard quantum limit governed by classical physics.

Slow wave atom interferometers for rotation sensing

Meriç Özcan

A gyroscope based on Sagnac interferometer measures the rotation rate relative to an inertial frame of reference. Sagnac effect originally has been derived and experimentally demonstrated with optical waves. Later, matter wave based Sagnac interferometers were developed due to inherent sensitivity over a photon based system. However in any interferometer whether it is photon or matter wave based the resultant phase shift due to counter-rotating waves is independent of the wave velocity. Here we show that one can have a larger phase shift with slower matter waves using Aharonov-Bohm effect: the phase difference of the counter propagating waves is proportional to the inverse square of the particle velocity.

Using optical trapping and manipulation techniques, we have created “circuits” of ultracold atomic gases, and demonstrated basic functionality that is analogous to the operation of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) and superfluid helium gyroscopes.

Single-photon Sagnac interferometer

Guillaume Bertocchi, Olivier Alibart, Daniel B. Ostrowsky +2 more

We present the first experimental demonstration of the optical Sagnac effect at the single-photon level. Using a high quality guided-wave heralded single-photon source at 1550 nm and a fibre optics setup, we obtain an interference pattern with net visibilities up to (99.2 ± 0.4%). On the basis of this high visibility and the compactness of the setup, the interest of such a system for fibre optics gyroscope is discussed.
