Abstract

We investigate the phase diagram for the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model on a two-dimensional honeycomb structure at low electronic densities. The phase diagram as a function of the interaction strength, $J$, consists of three phases, viz. a gas of electrons for $0\ensuremath{\leqslant}J<2t$, a gas of pairs for $2t\ensuremath{\leqslant}J<3.29t$, and a fully phase-separated state for $J>3.29t$. Further, we rigorously prove that a gas of electrons start forming pairs at $J=2t$ and the value is the same for any bipartite lattice in any dimension. We have elaborately explored the possibilities of formation of bigger clusters, i.e., bound states of three, four, and six electrons by performing exact diagonalization and perturbative analysis and ruled out formation of such clusters in the phase diagram.

Two-dimensionalt-Jmodel at low electron density

C. Stephen Hellberg, Efstratios Manousakis

The phase diagram of the two-dimensional t-J model is determined accurately at low electron density by a combination of analytic and numerical techniques. The ground state exhibits three phases in the limit of zero electron density: an unpaired state at small J/t, a gas of s-wave pairs for 2J/t\ensuremath{\lesssim}3.4367, and a phase-separated state at larger interaction strengths. Bound states of larger clusters are never realized, and the instabilities present at small densities are discussed.

Phase diagram of interacting spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice: A comprehensive exact diagonalization study

Sylvain Capponi, Andreas Martin Läuchli

We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor density-density interactions on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling. Using exact diagonalization techniques of the full Hamiltonian and constrained subspaces, combined with a careful choice of finite-size clusters, we determine the different charge orderings that occur for large interactions. In this regime, we find a two-sublattice N\'eel-like state, a charge modulated state with a tripling of the unit cell, a zigzag phase, and a charge ordered state with a 12-site unit cell we call N\'eel domain wall crystal, as well as a region of phase separation for attractive interactions. A sizable region of the phase diagram is classically degenerate, but it remains unclear whether an order-by-disorder mechanism will lift the degeneracy. For intermediate repulsion, we find evidence for a Kekul\'e or plaquette bond-order wave phase. We also investigate the possibility of a spontaneous Chern insulator phase (dubbed topological Mott insulator), as previously put forward by several mean-field studies. Although we are unable to detect convincing evidence for this phase based on energy spectra and order parameters, we find an enhancement of current-current correlations with the expected spatial structure compared to the noninteracting situation. While for the studied $t\ensuremath{-}{V}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{V}_{2}$ model, the phase transition to the putative topological Mott insulator is preempted by the phase transitions to the various ordered states, our findings might hint at the possibility for a topological Mott insulator in an enlarged Hamiltonian parameter space, where the competing phases are suppressed.

Exact analytic approaches to the two-dimensional t-J model at low electron density

C. Stephen Hellberg, Efstratios Manousakis

The phase diagram of the two-dimensional t-J model in the limit of infinitesimal electron density is determined exactly with analytic approaches. Numerical work is only required to show other potential ground states are never stabilized. Significant differences with previous work on the model are found. The ground state exhibits pairing for all interaction strengths insufficient to cause phase separation. The pairing is p-wave for small interaction strengths, d{sub x{sup 2}{minus}y{sup 2}} for intermediate J/t, and s-wave for larger J/t.

Quantum phase diagram of a frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$--$J_{1}^{\perp}$ Heisenberg model on an $AA$-stacked bilayer honeycomb lattice

P. H. Y. Li, R. F. Bishop

The zero-temperature quantum phase diagram of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$--$J_{1}^{\perp}$ model on an $AA$-stacked bilayer honeycomb lattice is investigated using the coupled cluster method (CCM). The model comprises two monolayers in each of which the spins, residing on honeycomb-lattice sites, interact via both nearest-neighbor (NN) and frustrating next-nearest-neighbor isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg exchange iteractions, with respective strengths $J_{1} > 0$ and $J_{2} \equiv \kappa J_{1}>0$. The two layers are coupled via a comparable Heisenberg exchange interaction between NN interlayer pairs, with a strength $J_{1}^{\perp} \equiv \delta J_{1}$. The complete phase boundaries of two quasiclassical collinear AFM phases, namely the Neel and Neel-II phases, are calculated in the $\kappa \delta$ half-plane with $\kappa > 0$. Whereas on each monolayer in the Neel state all NN pairs of spins are antiparallel, in the Neel-II state NN pairs of spins on zigzag chains along one of the three equivalent honeycomb-lattice directions are antiparallel, while NN interchain spins are parallel. We calculate directly in the thermodynamic (infinite-lattice) limit both the magnetic order parameter $M$ and the excitation energy $\Delta$ from the $s^{z}_{T}=0$ ground state to the lowest-lying $|s^{z}_{T}|=1$ excited state (where $s^{z}_{T}$ is the total $z$ component of spin for the system as a whole, and where the collinear ordering lies along the $z$ direction) for both quasiclassical states used (separately) as the CCM model state, on top of which the multispin quantum correlations are then calculated to high orders ($n \leq 10$) in a systematic series of approximations involving $n$-spin clusters. The sole approximation made is then to extrapolate the sequences of $n$th-order results for $M$ and $\Delta$ to the exact limit, $n \to \infty$.

Phase diagram of a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: The J1 - J2 - J3 model

P. H. Y. Li, R. F. Bishop, DAMIAN J. J. FARNELL +1 more

We use the coupled-cluster method in high orders of approximation to make a comprehensive study of the ground-state (GS) phase diagram of the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$-${J}_{3}$ model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions up to third-nearest neighbors. Results are presented for the GS energy and the average local onsite magnetization. With the nearest-neighbor coupling strength ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{\equiv}1$, we find four magnetically ordered phases in the parameter window ${J}_{2},{J}_{3}\ensuremath{\in}[0,1]$, namely, the N\'eel, striped, and N\'eel-II collinear AFM phases, plus a spiral phase. The N\'eel-II phase appears as a stable GS phase in the classical version of the model only for values ${J}_{3}<0$. Each of these four ordered phases shares a boundary with a disordered quantum paramagnetic (QP) phase, and at several widely separated points on the phase boundaries the QP phase has an infinite susceptibility to plaquette valence-bond crystalline order. We identify all of the phase boundaries with good precision in the parameter window studied, and we find three tricritical quantum critical points therein at (a) $({J}_{2}^{{c}_{1}},{J}_{3}^{{c}_{1}})=(0.51\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01,0.69\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)$ between the N\'eel, striped, and QP phases; (b) $({J}_{2}^{{c}_{2}},{J}_{3}^{{c}_{2}})=(0.65\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02,0.55\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)$ between the striped, spiral, and QP phases; and (c) $({J}_{2}^{{c}_{3}},{J}_{3}^{{c}_{3}})=(0.69\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01,0.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01)$ between the spiral, N\'eel-II, and QP phases.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensionalt-Jmodel

Masao Ogata, Marco U. Luchini, Sandro Sorella +1 more

The phase diagram of the one-dimensional t-J model is investigated by analyzing the results of exact diagonalization and the exact solutions at J/t=0 and 2. Phase separation takes place above a critical value of J around ${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{c}}$/t=2.5--3.5 depending on the electron density. In the small-J region, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory holds and its correlation exponents are calculated as a function of J/t and the electron density. Superconducting correlations become dominant in a region between the solvable case (J/t=2) and phase separation. A spin-gap region is also found at low density.
