Magnetic Relaxation in an Exactly Soluble Model

Abstract

Some nonequilibrium properties of an impurity in a linear chain of spins with nearest-neighbor interaction of the isotropic $X\ensuremath{-}Y$ type are studied. It is shown that under certain conditions its behavior is in agreement with the general principles of statistical mechanics. The relaxation in the presence of a transverse field is also studied, and it is found that in the weak coupling region the approach to equilibrium is described by a sum of exponentials. However, the results do not agree with the solution of the Bloch equations.

Relaxation inS=1/2 quantum spin chains: The role of second neighbor interactions

Surajit Sen, C. N. Hoff, Dennis E. Kuhl +1 more

Most of the existing dynamical studies in one dimension on magnetic insulators have considered the simplest spin models with nearest-neighbor interactions. In real systems, however, it is possible that longer range interactions are not entirely negligible. It is expected that the inclusion of next-nearest-neighbor interactions between spins in one-dimensional spin models will introduce a multitude of new frequencies in addition to the ones already present in the dynamics that arises due to nearest-neighbor interactions. We first present an exact solution for the dynamical xx-spin-pair correlations in an Ising chain with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions to confirm our expectation. We next show, via an approximate analytical calculation, that the dynamical zz-spin-pair correlations in the next-nearest-neighbor transverse Ising chain when plotted as a function of time is noticeably different with respect to the exactly solvable nearest-neighbor transverse Ising chain at T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} when the next-nearest-neighbor interaction is \ensuremath{\gtrsim}1/2 of the magnitude of the nearest-neighbor interaction. The effects could be fairly subtle in the time domain representation and in the spectral function when these additional interactions are weak (i.e., 1/2 of the nearest-neighbor interaction magnitude). The general conclusions reached in this work are expected to be valid for other simple quantum spin models such as the XY and XXZ models in one dimension. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Thermalization of a Magnetic Impurity in the Isotropic XY Model

Douglas B. Abraham, Eytan Barouch, Giovanni Gallavotti +1 more

We carry out an exact study of the relaxation of a single magnetic impurity embedded in a linear quantum chain. We obtain a rigorous result for the expectation value of any spin in the chain, and find that it relaxes to its equilibrium value as ${t}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

Relaxation and aging in quantum spin systems

Gunter Markus Schutz, Steffen Trimper

The nonthermal quantum relaxation of the magnetization under nonequilibrium initial conditions is studied for the transverse Ising chain and for the one-dimensional isotropic XY model. In the absence of a heat bath the transverse Ising system exhibits an oscillating relaxation with a decaying amplitude. At the critical transverse field some stationary properties become independent of the initial state. The isotropic XY chain with a spatially inhomogeneous initial state shows a slow, modulated algebraic decay of the magnetization. Analysis of the two-time autocorrelation function reveals the phenomenon of aging.

Low-energy dynamical characteristics of a quantum spin chain with magnetic impurities

Andrei A. Zvyagin

In the framework of the exactly solvable model, using nonperturbative methods, the temperature and magnetic field behavior of the NMR relaxation rate (and low-energy dynamical structure factor) for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain with magnetic impurities is calculated. For a single magnetic impurity, totally screened at low temperatures by spinons of the chain, the critical exponents, which determine the low-temperature and magnetic field behavior, get renormalized. For the finite concentration of impurities with the random distribution of the impurity-chain coupling the weak disorder in the distribution does not produce essential changes to the dynamical structure factor. Contrary, the strong disorder yields drastically different behavior of the low-energy dynamical characteristics, comparing to the homogeneous chain. Our results are generic, and they qualitatively agree in limiting cases with the results of perturbative calculations for disordered spin chains and with the data of experiments on quasi-one-dimensional spin compounds.

Heisenberg Linear Chain Magnets with Unlike Spins –An Exactly Soluble Model–

Hisao Okamoto, Katsuhiko Nagano, Tahashi Karasudani

The free energy, susceptibility and correlation functions for a linear chain of N +1 spins with unequal nearest-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg couplings due to two unlike spins randomly distributed on the chain are calculated explicitly in the (classical) limit of infinite spin. The temperature and concentration dependence of susceptibility are given in comparison with that for one-component systems.

Ising Chain with a Spin Impurity

Harold Falk

Consider a closed, linear chain of $N$ localized spins (each $s=\frac{1}{2}$) with nearest-neighbor Ising interaction. Such a chain, exposed to a uniform external magnetic field, will be called the pure host. Replace a single spin in the pure host by an impurity spin which is also subjected to nearest-neighbor Ising interaction and to the external field. The magnitude of the impurity spin, the magnitude of its magnetic moment, and the magnitude and sign of its interaction with the host are allowed to differ from the corresponding values characterizing the host. For the bulk system ($N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, for constant linear density of spins), the thermodynamic properties, such as the impurity magnetization, the (position-dependent) magnetization of the impurity-host system and the impurity-host spin correlation functions, are obtained exactly in terms of conventional, tabulated functions. Numerical results are presented for impurity spins of magnitude $S=\frac{3}{2},\frac{5}{2}$.
