Abstract

Using semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations, we analyze the response of an ensemble of $1s$ excitons driven by a femtosecond optical pulse beyond the traditional approach of slowly varying amplitudes and phases. For optical pulses of a given duration, we show that the off-resonance optical field can evolve into a stable soliton. Besides hyperbolic-secant solitons, we find a single soliton with nonzero asymptotics that is stable against low-amplitude perturbations and whose form is not affected by collisions.

We analyze the response of an ensemble of 1 s -excitons driven by a femtosecond optical pulse, beyond traditional “slowly varying amplitudes” approach. For optical pulses of a given duration it is shown that the off-resonance optical field can evolve into a stable soliton with nonzero asymptotic behavior.

Using Maxwell-Bloch equations, we analyze the response of an ensemble of two-level atoms driven by a femtosecond optical pulse beyond the traditional approach of slowly varying amplitudes and phases. Few-cycle solitons in a two-component medium

Using Maxwell-Bloch equations, we analyze the response of a two-component medium of two-level atoms driven by a two-cycle optical pulse beyond the traditional approach of slowly varying amplitudes and phases. We show that the notions of carrier, envelope, phase and group velocities can be generalized to this situation, and that for optical pulses of a given duration, the optical field can evolve into temporal few-cycle solitons.

Femtosecond nanometer-sized optical solitons

Andreas Pusch, Joachim M. Hamm, Ortwin G. Hess

We report the existence of guided optical solitons of femtosecond duration and nanoscopic mode area. The proposed scheme exploits the structural confinement of light in a low-index subwavelength gap and the nonlinear interaction with a resonantly absorbing medium to achieve stable and ultraconcentrated coherent pulses. Employing full time- and space-dependent Maxwell-Bloch equations, we find that these extremely nonlinear, propagating impulses are quasisolitons, stabilized against dispersion and absorption by self-induced transparency at a laterally constant Rabi frequency.

We show that the notions of carrier, envelope, phase, and group velocities can be generalized to this situation. For optical pulses of a given duration, we show that the optical field can form a temporal soliton.

Steady-state propagation of ultrashort optical pulses in semiconductor excitonic medium

Irina B. Talanina

The form-invariant coherent pulse propagation in semiconductors excited at the 1s-exciton resonance is studied analytically with the reduced semiconductor Maxwell–Bloch equations. The sech-shaped pulse solution for the electric field is presented. The effects of Coulomb interactions between excitons and spatial dispersion are discussed. Applications to CdS and CdSe crystals are made.
