Entangled mechanical cat states via conditional single photon optomechanics

Uzma Akram, Warwick P. Bowen, Gerard J Milburn

We study single photon optomechanics conditioned on photon counting events. By selecting only detection events that occur long after a photon pulse arrives at the cavity, the optomechanical interaction time can be increased, allowing a large momentum kick to be applied to the oscillator. We apply this to two optomechanical cavities set-up within a Mach–Zhender interferometer driven by a single photon source. The conditional state of the mechanical modes in such a system becomes an entangled cat state for detection times resulting in maximum mechanical amplitude in phase space. Further we study the dynamics induced by a second photon pulse injected into an already conditioned optomechanical cavity, a quarter of a mechanical period after the first photon has been detected. We illustrate how the optomechanical interaction resulting from the second photon can be strongly suppressed allowing conditional optomechanical routing of single photons with single photon control pulses.

Quantum simulation of a three-mode optomechanical system based on the Fredkin-type interaction

Jin Liu, Yue‐Hui Zhou, Huang Jian +2 more

The realization of multimode optomechanical interactions in the single-photon strong-coupling regime is a desired task in cavity optomechanics, but it remains a big challenge in realistic physical systems. In this work we propose a reliable scheme to simulate a three-mode optomechanical system working in the single-photon strong-coupling regime based on the Fredkin-type interaction. This is achieved by utilizing two strong drivings to the two exchange-coupled modes in the Fredkin-type coupling involving one optical mode and two mechanical-like modes. As an application of this enhanced three-mode nonlinear optomechanical coupling, we show how to generate entangled cat states of the mechanical-like modes using the conditional displacement mechanism. The quantum coherence effects in the generated states are investigated by calculating the two-mode joint Wigner function and quantum entanglement. The influence of the system dissipation on the state generation is also considered. This work will open up a different route to the study of multimode optomechanical interactions at the single-photon level.

We present schemes that create entanglement between photons and phonons in an optomechanical system. One scheme enables single photon control and novel optomechanical nonlinearities. Another scheme enables quantum-limited readout of phonon jumps.

Macroscopic quantum entanglement in modulated optomechanics

Mei Wang, Xin‐You Lü, Ying-Dan Wang +2 more

Quantum entanglement in mechanical systems is not only a key signature of macroscopic quantum effects but has wide applications in quantum technologies. Here we propose an effective approach for creating strong steady-state entanglement between two directly coupled mechanical oscillators (or a mechanical oscillator and a microwave resonator) in a modulated optomechanical system. The entanglement is achieved by combining the processes of a cavity cooling and the two-mode parametric interaction, which can surpass the bound on the maximal stationary entanglement from the two-mode parametric interaction. In principle, our proposal allows one to cool the system from an initial thermal state to an entangled state with high purity by a monochromatic driving laser. Also, the obtained entangled state can be used to implement the continuous-variable teleportation with high fidelity. Moreover, our proposal is robust against the thermal fluctuations of the mechanical modes under the condition of strong optical pumping.

Nonlinear quantum optomechanics in a Fano-mirror microcavity system

Lei Du, Juliette Monsel, Witlef Wieczorek +1 more

We study a Fano-mirror optomechanical system in the quantum nonlinear regime. In this system, two strongly lossy optical modes hybridize through both coherent and dissipative couplings to form an effective optical mode with a drastically reduced linewidth. This linewidth reduction enables the system to access the single-photon strong-coupling and sideband-resolved regimes simultaneously. We formulate the system dynamics using an effective master-equation approach and benchmark it against quantum Langevin and dressed-state master-equation descriptions. With experimentally realistic parameters, we predict clear quantum signatures, including photon blockade and the generation of mechanical cat states. Our work establishes the Fano-mirror architecture as a promising platform for harnessing single-photon optomechanical nonlinearities for quantum state engineering under achievable experimental conditions.
