Phase control of group-velocity-based biexciton coherence in a multiple quantum well nanostructure

Abstract

A double cascade-type four-level multiple-quantum-well-based exciton—biexciton transitions are proposed. The study is carried out on a 4.8-nm ZnSe single-quantum well which is embedded into ZnMgSSe cladding layers and pseudomorphically grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a (0 0 1) GaAs substrate. It is displayed that the exciton spin relaxation and relative phases between applied fields can influence the transient and steady-state behaviors of absorption, dispersion, and group velocity of two weak probe and signal fields. Also, transient behaviors of electron population of different levels are discussed. It is found that the probe or signal amplification occurs in the absence of population inversion.

Simultaneous slow and fast light transmission-reflection with amplification in a defect slab via exciton spin relaxation

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

The absorption, transmission and reflection properties of two incident probe and signal pulses through a defect slab doped with four-level GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells with 15 periods of 17.5 nm GaAs wells and 15 nm Al0.3 Ga0.7 as barriers is theoretically discussed. It is shown that the biexciton coherence leads to the phase control of the absorption, transmission and reflection properties of two weak probe and signal beams. We will also show that the exciton spin relaxation between excitonic states can affect the slow and fast light propagation of transmitted and reflected pulses with amplification in a defect slab with dispersive material. Our results show that many particle interactions due to Coulomb correlations in semiconductors can lead to the controlling of light propagation through the defect dielectric medium.

Kerr non-linearity and four-wave mixing in a double-cascade type four-level system of multiple quantum wells

Wei Yan, Tao Wang, Xiaoming Li +1 more

We study the non-linear optical response in multiple quantum wells structure with a double-cascade type four-level configuration based on excitons and biexcitons transitions. By analysing the Kerr non-linear effects, we obtain the slow, mutually matched group velocities and giant Kerr non-linearity of probe and signal fields. While when the signal (or probe) field is removed, the non-linear optical phenomenon four-wave mixing (FWM) originating from quantum interference is demonstrated. The FWM efficiency of the system study is about 50%. Such a semiconductor system is much more practical than its atomic counterpart because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength.

Phase control of light transmission and reflection based biexciton coherence in a defect dielectric medium

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

Phase control of two weak probe lights’ transmission and reflection based biexciton coherence in a defect dielectric medium doped by four-level GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells with 15 periods of 17.5 nm GaAs wells and 15 nm Al0.3Ga0.7As barriers is theoretically investigated. The biexciton coherence in this scheme is set up by two continuous wave control fields that couple to a resonance of biexcitons. It is shown that the transmission and reflection properties versus relative phase between applied fields can be controlled by the intensity of control fields and exciton spin relaxation between exciton states. Our studies show that many-particle interactions due to Coulomb correlations in semiconductors can be harnessed by quantum coherence in an interacting many-particle system.

Controllable amplification, absorption, and dispersion in double‐cascade‐type four‐level system of multiple quantum wells

Wei Yan, Tao Wang, Xiaoming Li +3 more

Abstract A double‐cascade‐type four‐level system of semiconductor multiple quantum wells (MQWs) was constructed with biexcitons and excitons. The nonlinear optical properties for amplification, absorption, and dispersion of 2‐weak fields in this scheme are investigated. It shows that the amplification, absorption, and dispersion responses of 2‐weak fields can be achieved by appropriately adjusting the relative phase, the probe detuning, and the two control Rabi frequencies. The investigation is much more practical than its atomic counterpart because of its flexible design and the widely adjustable parameters. It may provide a new possibility in technological applications for the light amplifier and optical switch working on quantum coherence effects in MQW solid‐state systems.

Matched slow optical soliton pairs via biexciton coherence in quantum dots

Wen‐Xing Yang, Ai-Xi Chen, Ray‐Kuang Lee +1 more

We theoretically investigate the simultaneous formation and stable propagation of slow optical soliton pairs in semiconductor quantum dots with a four-level biexciton-exciton cascade configuration. Owing to the destructive interference set up by two continuous wave control fields that couple to a biexciton state, the linear as well as nonlinear dispersion can be dramatically enhanced simultaneously with the absorptions of two weak probe fields being almost suppressed. These results reveal that the detrimental distortions of the two weak-pulsed probe fields due to dispersion effects can be well balanced by the self-phase modulation effect under very low input light intensity, which leads to the slow temporal optical soliton pairs with matched group velocity and amplitude. We also show that the propagation of slow optical solitons can be strongly modified by the biexciton coherence.

Biexcitonic effects in coherently controlled six-wave-mixing experiments on ZnSe quantum wells

Hans Georg Breunig, T. Voss, Ilja Rückmann +1 more

Coherently controlled four-wave-mixing (FWM) measurements have turned out to be a very sensitive tool to investigate the microscopic origin of the nonlinear optical response of semiconductor quantum-well structures, in particular if excitons are excited [1-3]. The measured signal oscillates as a function of the phase difference of the two interferometric pulses and is modulated additionally by contributions that oscillate with integer multiples of the excitonic resonance frequency. The influence of these harmonics can be measured in background free directions, i.e., the first (FWM) or second (six-wave mixing, SWM) diffracted order in direction 2k2-k1 or 3k2-2k1, respectively. Their intensity is easily quantified by inspecting the corresponding Fourier transforms (FT). Here, we report on transient interferometric SWM measurements and the influence of biexcitons on the signal.
