Abstract

A novel technique of digital laser space communication, in which a device of CO2 optical bistability is utilized as the optical switch, is presented. In this paper, the theory of optical bistability (03) in 10.6um with the Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer device and intracavity electrooptic modulation (IEM) device are introduced. Corresponding experimental results, which show the consistency with the theoritical analyses, are observed. Choosing the scanning F-P interferometer device and IEM device as our experimental components for CO2 laser digital communication, the elementary experiments of this technique in 10.6um laser communication link are achieved.

Optical Bistability by Using a Tunable Fibre Laser with Fibre Fabry–Perot

Guohui Lv, Hongan Ye, Junqing Li +2 more

We observe a novel hybrid optical bistability by using an electro-optically tuned cw fibre laser with a fibre Fabry–Perot filter. The principles of the optical bistable device in two operation manners are analysed. The applications in monitoring the wavelength shift of a tunable fibre laser and fibre sensor of digital type are also discussed.

Precise Measurements of Bistability in a CO2 Laser with Intracavity Saturable Absorber

E. Arimondo, Bianca Maria Dinelli, E. Menehi

Optical bistability in a laser with an intracavity saturable absorber is a phenomenon theoretically investigated firstly by Lugiato et al(1). The experimental observations in CO2 lasers(2,3) have provided clear evidence of the bistability phenomenon and shown that the absorber parameters could be determined from these observations. In this work a quantitative comparison between a theoretical description of optical bistability and the experimental results is presented for the first time. The parameters defining the laser cavity and the CO2 amplifying medium were measured carefully, and the bistability was observed and analyzed quantitatively as a function of the laser parameters.

Optical bistability in the CO_2 laser: the regular- to sequence-band switching

J. W. R. Tabosa, J. R. Rios Leite

Optical bistability is demonstrated in a CO(2) laser with an intracavity hot CO(2) cell switching between regular- and sequence-band lines. The relaxation coupling between CO(2) vibrational modes, which leads to cross saturation in competing gains, explains the observed results.

Dynamic behavior of bistability in a laser with a saturable absorber

E. Arimondo, Didier Dangoisse, C. Gabbanini +2 more

Optical bistability in a CO2 infrared laser containing SF6 as a saturable intracavity absorber has been studied under dynamic conditions as a function of a time-dependent laser control parameter. The width of the optical bistability region, the fluctuations in the bistability switching values, and the dependence on the initial conditions have been investigated in this transient optical bistability. A numerical solution of the laser rate equations provides a good interpretation of the experimental results, but some experimental observations cannot be completely explained.

Dynamic behavior of the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with heavily doped n-GaAs internal layer under 20 ns laser pulses excitation has been studied. Optical bistability with less than 10 ns switch-OFF time has been demonstrated.

Hybrid optical bistability in fabry-perot interferometer containing plasma

Zhong Quande

A hybrid optical bistable system of a plasma in a Fabry-Perot interferometer driven by a single-mode cw laser is proposed. The general expressions of the minimum change of the electron density for optical bistability and the changes of electron density at the "on" and "off" points of the optical bistability are obtained theoretically. The necessary data for the design of the optical bistability in infrared to mm-wave region are given.
