Abstract

A hybrid optical bistable system of a plasma in a Fabry-Perot interferometer driven by a single-mode cw laser is proposed. The general expressions of the minimum change of the electron density for optical bistability and the changes of electron density at the "on" and "off" points of the optical bistability are obtained theoretically. The necessary data for the design of the optical bistability in infrared to mm-wave region are given.

OPTICAL SWITCHING AND BIST ABILITY IN A FABRY-PEROT INTERFEROMETER CONTAINING PLASMA

Zhong Quande, 中国科学院物理研究所

In this paper, the optical switching and bistability of a Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with plasma are studied theoretically. In the plane-wave approximation a equilibrium state equation which shows nonlinear transmission-intensity characteristic is derived. The critical detuning and the general formulae of "on " and "off" intensities for bistable operation are presented. A numerical example is given.

Optical Bistability by Using a Tunable Fibre Laser with Fibre Fabry–Perot

Guohui Lv, Hongan Ye, Junqing Li +2 more

We observe a novel hybrid optical bistability by using an electro-optically tuned cw fibre laser with a fibre Fabry–Perot filter. The principles of the optical bistable device in two operation manners are analysed. The applications in monitoring the wavelength shift of a tunable fibre laser and fibre sensor of digital type are also discussed.

Optical bistability in a laser containing a saturable absorber

Smail Djabi, H. Boudoukha, M. Djabi

In this work, the theory of optical bistability for the homogeneously broadening of a nonlinear absorber inside Fabry-Perot interferometer is treated. The theoretical influence of the resonator losses on the optical bistability is examined mainly in the cases for which losses depend on both the mode frequency and the density of photons. On the basis of the Rate Equation Approach (REA), we analytically and numerically solved this type of equation for stationary case.

We have observed optical bistability in a Fabry-Perot cavity with a nematic liquid crystal film. Switching phenomenon was observed with a low power single-mode cw laser of about 300 mW.

Dynamic behavior of the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with heavily doped n-GaAs internal layer under 20 ns laser pulses excitation has been studied. Optical bistability with less than 10 ns switch-OFF time has been demonstrated.

Optical Bistability of an Injection-Locked Single-Mode Fabry-Perot Laser Diode and Its Application to an Optical Filp-Flop

We investigate optical bistability of an injection-locked single-mode Fabry-Perot laser diode. Normal and reversed optical bistability curves are observed from the injection-locked laser. And the inverse bistability is used to implement an all-optical flip-flop with the high on-off ratio of over 35 dB.
